Eventually I think they'll get everything under the display and all these compromises will seem quaint.
When somebody has found a way to produce a hundred of tiny sub-pixel cameras that between pixels, you might actually get your wish. Until then it’s either notch, hole-punch, or bezel.

Today’s displays have pixels in the order of 50 micron, a camera might have be granted a space of 20 micron. Subtract a bit of padding and end with cameras with an entrance pupil of 15 micron, almost two orders of magnitude smaller than existing cameras.

The way I see it it similar to going to a theater to watch a movie and deciding what is more annoying, some guy's head in the corner blocking the screen (hole punch) or a bus parked sideways in center (wide notch).

I cant remember the last time I saw a bus parked in a movie theater... wait. Never. But I hear you those heads in your field of view are a pain. Good thing the notch is nowhere near the center of my POV. And that there is useful info on either side.

I guess it's easy to punch a hole in the screen if you just need a camera...

But iPhones have a lot of other stuff up there:

If Apple insists on having all that hardware there... I wish they would black-out the sides of the notch and just keep notification icons there in portrait... and in landscape, keep it black and don't ever let any content leak into those areas.

I don't have a problem with a bezel, or even a virtual bezel. I just want it consistent.

I'm still using an iPhone 6S Plus (thanks battery replacement!) and its HUGE bezels never bothered me.

I'd almost guarantee not. How do I know? Actual iPhone X and XS owners know the notch is a non-issue. It's people that don't even own an iPhone with a notch that highly exaggerate the notch.

I've owned an iPhone with a notch, and, while it doesn't bother me much, one wound be crazy to say that it would be better than a considerably smaller, single hole.

Technically everything inside the notch could go away without losing too much. That includes the front camera as well. The rear camera is much better anyway, and if they added a small rear LCD for selfies, even the camera punch hole would be unnecessary. But I'm sure having two screens would further increase the cost and size, while sacrificing the battery size as well. And people who want to hold the phone to their face would miss the speaker, microphone, proximity sensor.

Funny, actually. But the iPhone X and XS don't really need a chin, Apple literally curves the display under itself, so there are no connectors at the bottom edge of the visual screen. The chin exists in other phones because of the screen's connectors at the bottom. Apple addressed that issue, but indeed the borders around the screen are large.

They probably did it as a usability thing, not out of need. E.g. people accidentally going to the task switcher just by holding the phone. If the gestures were different I imagine they could really do an edge to edge design.

I own a notched I device, the screenshots of this hole in the screen look quite a bit better than the notch on my Xr

Maybe they'll just make a miniature iPad Pro about the size of a phone and do away with the notch altogether. After all, who really uses a media device in their living rooms with a notch in the display?

I guess the camera-cutout, you could say 'blocks' the view, but who would really notice it when your playing games anyway. It wouldn't matter where it is, as long as it works, (as long as its not on the bottom of the device)

I think this comment itself is a bit exaggerated. My daily driver is an iPhone XS Max. I’ve had it since the day it came out and it still annoys the hell out of me.

Nice piece of Chinese spy equipment there

Does it update my social credit score in real time, and sync with my Huawei Watch to monitor how healthy my organs are for the government wants to harvest them?
American also spy on others

I don't know why the article says that the new phone 'will be difficult to obtain in countries like the United States, UK, Australia, and New Zealand because the US has banned Huawei phones. None of the mentioned countries is a colony of the US and Huawei phones are readily available in the UK. I have a Huawei P20 bought in the UK and it is excellent!
Does it "phone home" while you are using it?
