anything hereafter in the foldable mobiles will be a copycat!! Innovation requires bold first steps, not necessarily the correct steps.....sorry Apple...if it hurts!! Nothing major beyond touch screen mobiles and tablets in the last decade!!

They weren’t the first touch screen phone, nor the first touch screen tablet, nor first smart watch. Yet most people would say iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch were pretty innovative.

People use tablets for the things you claim require big screen TVs and computers here. A phone that can turn into a reasonably sized tablet with a good aspect ratio would be pretty useful.

yes that's true what you say, but the experience you get when you watch a movie on a big screen
is better

I agree wholeheartedly. I have a 10” front projector screen in my house.

But more and more, people are watching movies on their tablets, and typing emails on their tablets, and using tablets for things they used to use computers or TVs for.

So how prone to scratches are these screens? To make them flexible they must be pretty soft...
Just watched a video on this, it’s basically plastic all the way around. In tablet mode, after a lot of usage, there is a “bubble fold” that forms down the middle. It has no front camera while in tablet mode either. The innovation is cool, but Apple will probably wait to see how the market takes to this kind of device.

But for $2600, I’ll buy an iPhone XS and an iPad Pro.

yes, but the tablet can never replace the tv or the computer. so in similar way the foldable phone can never replace your computer and big screen tv either. im just saying that the trade off is not enough for people to jump on to the foldable phone bandwagon right now

Yup, the compromises of these foldable products will overshadow any pocketability that they bring. Terrible materials, creased screens, weird aspect ratios, wonky software, and no app support are just a few ways it will be a bad experience for the customer. Value isnt just being able to do said task, it should be about the overall experience of using the device. While this version looks much better than the Samsung version, the compromises still outweigh the “tablet in your pocket” potential. These products currently don’t solve any problems.
wrong

No one. Android has provided tablet support tools for years and there are still lacking. Now they have to use new tools made for these Frankenstein devices, good luck.
What is lacking? Android apps natively scale to whatever size/AR the system reports, so the multitude of screen sizes, ARs, resolutions etc is trivial from that point of view. Both yourself and the poster you replied to seem to be completely unaware of that.

Try putting your iPad in your pocket :)
Big fail. Doesn't matters how cheap apple combinations are, it is still a fail.

I don’t understand your point. Spending less on an iPad and new iPhone? Or the fact that Apple hasn’t made a foldable yet?
The point is you would only have your iPad at home or whenever you’re willing to wear a backpack.

This device doesn’t need a backpack and is therefore superior to an iPad (in that one specific way).

A cost comparison isn’t fair since this device does something the iPad can’t do.

Also the iPad would need it’s own separate cell plan to be convenient so factor another $30/month into the cost ($500 over to years) plus the initial price premium of the cellular iPad.

The biggest shortcomings with this design is that they will never be able to put glass near on the area where it folds. How many of you want to see plastics or like-of on their mobile devices? This will accelerate wear on the device without a doubt.

Think the galaxy fold is more practical. I take it out and quickly flip open with my my thumb and I'm using the phone already. I can see myself opening the fold for most normal usage (phone with a big screen) Mate X is less easy to unfold as you have to use your fingers and pull from back and twist your hand backward. This is quite unnatural to do. So you are likely to just use the phone folded which defeats the purpose of having the bigger screen when using the phone.

The point that many here tend to overlook is foldable is not a one to one tablet replacement.

What's more important, imo, it gives you a pocketable BIGGER screen phone for normal use (which can really enhance the experience).

Mate X is like a phone+tablet combo which caused a lot of compromises which makes neither here nor there situation.

Galaxy fold does very well as a big screen phone. And that's what is important.

It is not worth $2,600 US. ...
Get yourself an iPad mini for $500 and you pretty-much have the same thing.

But you can not phone with the iPad.

I do not know why Apple is preventing us from phoning using the lte-iPads, but it is not implemented.

There is no phone-application on any iPad.

At least they should implement that as an answer to the innovative "folding-display" phones.

What shadiness. I used to work for Cisco and we did all sorts of questionable contracts for different governments, will you avoid Cisco infrastructure?
Exactly. That’s my point. At some stage, my use of Huawei may be unavoidable if they’re providing infrastructure. It won’t be a matter of boycotting a device anymore. And, as you suggest, the same may be true for Cisco. Can’t avoid it, but maybe I’ll not buy a Cisco branded PCMCIA card for my PowerBook G4. :p

This looks so much better than Samsung's, to bad is Huawei and $2600....
But I'm definitely happier with the folded screen size being an actual usable phone screen and looks like a much better thickness. Can't wait to see where this folded future brings us

Both foldable phones are absolute first gen push outs from these companies. Nobody expects perfection or even models without, more than likely, numerous bugs and physical imperfections.

Samsung & Huawei absolutely know they are not their company's flagship phones which will be their biggest sellers. They also know now is a great time with iPhone sales stalling to insert interest in something truly different from their respective companies.

I just don't get how negative everyone is towards them beyond simple critique.

I'm an Apple diehard in and out. Seeing these first gen foldable phones definitely makes me wonder how long it will be for Apple to stop denying that they have somewhat stalled in the innovation area.

You don't buy something that costs between $2000 & $2600 by just looking at the pictures. Yes Samsung may look Nokia Communicator but it's software is tuned for such displays with split screen multi-tasking. It has seamlessly integrated wrt UI & Software. Huawei, we don't know yet.

They Look good in renders, but in person [1]. they are still a few years to go before it will be anywhere near good enough for Apple's first gen. There is a reason why they don't allow journalist get actually touch or hold it.
