They weren’t the first touch screen phone, nor the first touch screen tablet, nor first smart watch. Yet most people would say iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch were pretty innovative.

Yes we have been hearing this for sometime. After iPad their innovation engine kind of stopped. Playing safe by carefully looking at failed attempts of their competitors (& sometimes suppliers) is not that difficult for a trillion dollar company like Apple...

Every area in the mobility space (except SoC) they are behind competition. May be they are really really stuck with their huge baggage...

Based on the logic from those guys, I'm sure Apple could have released their own LTE or 5G modem like Huawei, but simply chose not to. LOL.

Bingo. That's a nice analogy.

They design their own silicone already. If they wanted to design their own custom modem they probably could, but why? They have the capability of hiring any of the same engineering teams as any other company.

Yeah man and if apple wanted they could launch a man mission to Pluto.

Some comparisons for reference.

Sure they could. Apple can buy whatever they need and Samsung WILL sell it to them.
Samsung will first use these screens for their own product which is normal.
After they will be able to manufacture and sell more individual screens that then can manufacture and sell devices that use them, then and only they Apple will be able to buy from them. From the looks of it Apple will wait quite a while.
So apple wouldn't be able to launch such a device right now even if they wanted to.
And honestly they should spy on these Chinese companies and see how they were able to get their hands on the flexible display tech. Although yeah if they want to use the best quality OLED screens they have to wait for Samsung.

It is glass. I know a german glass manufacturer who told me a couple of weeks ago they were providing foldable glass to a chinese smartphone manufacturer for an upcoming innovative product. I guess it was for Huawei...
Have you even seen a piece of glass crease like that?... !

Samsung already sold these screens to Huawei Mate X...so no
[doublepost=1551082729][/doublepost]
It's gonna take apple 3 more years to match this
Better ...nice thinking, let others to take the blame for unmature and "child" issues with first gen and after that, if there is a market for these kind of devices...

Falcon Wing = copying Tesla (Falcon Wong doors). The Chinese have no shame. Friends don’t let friends buy Huawei.

Aren’t these foldables like the Netbooks of today? Pretty naff phones and pretty naff tablets. “Not better at anything”

Both foldable phones are absolute first gen push outs from these companies. Nobody expects perfection or even models without, more than likely, numerous bugs and physical imperfections.

Samsung & Huawei absolutely know they are not their company's flagship phones which will be their biggest sellers. They also know now is a great time with iPhone sales stalling to insert interest in something truly different from their respective companies.

I just don't get how negative everyone is towards them beyond simple critique.

I'm an Apple diehard in and out. Seeing these first gen foldable phones definitely makes me wonder how long it will be for Apple to stop denying that they have somewhat stalled in the innovation area.
Is because they are trying to sell qualities below “prototype” hardwares..? They should stay in their companies, not sold in the mass market.

You gotta wonder what kind of precedent they are trying to set when Apple is already finding out that $1k+ smartphones don't sell all that well.

It's cool, I guess, but I would never buy into that. Smartphones need to get smaller IMO. This is getting ridiculous.

Ok? So you’re saying Apple couldn’t develop things in house if they wanted to? I’m not saying they have the capability at this very moment, I’m just saying they could if they wanted. They’ve made the business decision NOT to do those things - on purpose. The implication of some earlier was that Apple is just wholly incapable as a corporation of innovating technologies for some reason or another (lack of ability, dumbness, etc?)

Not, not a viable foldable phone with a great screen quality like Samsung has developed.
It's not very hard to build a prototype, it doesn't even have to work at all, just a a proof of concept front a design and usability stand point but building something that can be mass produced and usable as a consumer product is a different story. Apple is probably around 2 yeas behind in that regard.

Samsung aren’t going to deny their biggest customer. It took Apple so long to introduce OLED phones because they had issues early on and weren’t up to quality. I’m not sure where Huawei got their screens, but they either found another supplier or bought them from Samsung. It would surprise me if they would be willing to sell screens to Huawei, their biggest competitor, but not to Apple. Again, Samsung is in no position to deny their largest customer. In the end, the tech just isn’t ready for prime time, as shown by these devices.
Samsung's biggest costumer is Samsung itself. So you are correct Samsung it's not going to deny this tech to it's biggest customer but Apple will definitely have to wait for quite a while.

Not really.

These foldable phones remind me of smartphones prior to iPhone. They just haven't figured it out, yet.

You say it will be the next big thing, I say it will be dead soon. Let’s see who is going to be right.

If prices get in range of about 1000 dollars, there is no way this is gonna fail.

If prices stay in range of $2000, or get even more expensive, then this is gonna fail so hard.

I would like for Apple to come to the stage once again, and show everyone how it should be done. To show Huawei, Samsung and others how pathetic their implementations are, like they showed to Blackberry, Palm, Nokia and others how pathetic their "smartphones" are.

But the key factor for that to happen is missing, therefore I will not be holding my breath. And I will leave up to you to guess what or who that "key factor" is...

The key factor is ... YOU or any other consumer who buys stuff!

I will be reserving judgment till someone credible actually touches and uses one but I want generally to be able to use my phone one handed...

What is lacking? Android apps natively scale to whatever size/AR the system reports, so the multitude of screen sizes, ARs, resolutions etc is trivial from that point of view. Both yourself and the poster you replied to seem to be completely unaware of that.

Quantity and quality.

They’ll wait because it makes sense to wait. Not because of Samsung. If Apple wanted the screens, they would have them.

Couldn't be further from the truth. Netbooks were woefully underpowered laptops with low resolution screens. These phones have the latest SoCs, 8GB+ RAM, 5G, 512GB+ storage. They literally couldn't be any better specced.

LoL based on what?
Your opinion that is fundamentally not backed up by anything? When did Samsung say they are willing right now to sell these displays for anybody that wants to pay for them?

Apple waits because it has no other choice. If they want to use the best foldable OLED on the market they have to wait.
