Millions of these devices will sell in the next calendar year.

I did say calendar year though. So 2MM by the end of February 2020 it is!

Most pointless form factor ever. And even if Apple came out with their own version, I still would see no point to it.
And yet people like me would. Whodda thunk it?

Oh no no, we aren’t combining different company sales now. Pick the device of your choosing and we’ll agree to that.
Except that's not what I said. I said both manufacturers. So I'm sticking to what I said. Including the "calendar year" part (see above), which I wish I hadn't said, but fair is fair, as you said.

Okay so 2 million total devices between the Fold and the X Mate by end of a February 2020? Winner gets?

No thanks. Someone will buy it to be different but folding display will not be a viable option for mobile devices. As said by others, features are not innovation.

Reminds me of a push button Start/Stop on a car, which auto manufacturers love to promote in their ads and on their websites. Were people having trouble rotating their key in a lock tumbler? A solution in search of a problem.

add in screen touch id, Samsung UI and apples apps and imessage and this would be the one!....i cant wait for the apple version of this ....but that price is gonna be like $2800 :(

No pressure. We are simply posting our estimates, and we will see how that ship sails. My personal guess is about 1 million in sales for Samsung, while Huawei might do a little better. So yeah, total 2 million in sales by April 2020.

Now back to our regularly scheduled discussion.

I think the recent price hikes have more or less given Apple an idea of just how far they can push their producing pricing. Apple is now primarily dealing with mass market products. Anything they make has to be able to sell in millions each year in the very least (even the HomePod, for all its criticism, was estimated to have sold about 4 million units despite limited availability, which I feel is a very respectable number).

I have no doubt that Apple is also investigating possible use cases for flexible screens, but I suspect that their takeaway will be that folding displays might be more suitable for wearables rather than smartphones.

I will be very surprised if Apple does end up releasing a foldable phone of their own. This is one race Apple might well decide to sit out.

Button? Key? What are these? I walk up to my car and the doors open. I walk away and they lock.

Huawei ALREADY killed this niche product and both of them run Android.

Tell me why a Note is better value than an XS? You going to start listing things like expandable storage and a stylus? It runs Android...that’s the first strike.
Thats not the point. There is a market for this and you obviously arent the target market. People buy blackberry's because the ease of use for emailing. People buy iPhones because the ease of use for photos etc. Business people will invest into these types of products as it is more efficient and easy.

Again, some people prefer android to IOS (I personally don't) but you don't go bagging big companies like Samsung for releasing products like this. The Note 9 and iPhone XS are both awesome phones, but for a cheaper price with the Note, you get more value for your money.

yes, people are having trouble rotating keys in the tumbler locks.

maybe not entirely relevant to the starter, but that's an entirely different argument.

But car door/trunk locks? Yes. Live in a northern climate with snow, ice, slush for a large portion of the year. having your car locks freeze solid sucks unbelievable things.

as for keys inside the car? completely and utterly irrelevant. the key's only purpose for ignitian was security. your car ignition is nothing but a circuit that needs to be closed to start the car. whether that's a button, toggle, key that turns is completely irrelevant.

since MOST cars these days have digital signed remote keys for unlocking the car anyways, the use of a key to start the car is irrelevant. A push button is easier. Sure, you could still require a physical key to reach into a pocket and grab. OR you can just use an RF chip that you can leave in your pocket.

I'm going to pick the secon option because it's damn convenient.

just too bad I didn't get that option on my current car. I've been feeling the itch for something new

Samsung has said they expect to make one million Folds. That's much more than previous years when their folding phone manufacturing estimates were only in the tens of thousands. Apparently they're still difficult to make.
Yup, and that’s just the initial production, with more possible pending sales data. I don’t think they’ll sell like hotcakes or anything, but I do think it represents the beginning of a new era, and I expect demand to increase substantially as time goes on.
