No value? A phone that turns into a tablet. Office functions in your pocket, no value?

Yup, the compromises of these foldable products will overshadow any pocketability that they bring. Terrible materials, creased screens, weird aspect ratios, wonky software, and no app support are just a few ways it will be a bad experience for the customer. Value isnt just being able to do said task, it should be about the overall experience of using the device. While this version looks much better than the Samsung version, the compromises still outweigh the “tablet in your pocket” potential. These products currently don’t solve any problems.

I never understand this opinion. Apple, a multi billion dollar company employing some of the best engineers and designers in the world, couldn’t do something like this even if they wanted to!? Hahaha

For sure...Apple no doubt has multiple prototypes of foldable screen iPhones for evaluation in their labs, for quite some time. Not ready for prime time.

Let Samsung and Huawei be the first, with compromises and all.

yeah.... as with other comments. What's the screen made out of?

I agree with you regarding the current products. I think foldable screens have huge potential though.

They design their own silicone already. If they wanted to design their own custom modem they probably could, but why? They have the capability of hiring any of the same engineering teams as any other company.

Building a processor using a license from ARM is a lot easier than building a leading edge modem with no license.

The potential is there, no doubt about that, but I think this race to be first (neither technically were) just forced them both to push out some crappy products. As of right now, it’s just a foldable screen in plastic.

A phone wrapped in a plastic display? That thing's gonna scratch and scuff like C R A Z Y.

It is glass. I know a german glass manufacturer who told me a couple of weeks ago they were providing foldable glass to a chinese smartphone manufacturer for an upcoming innovative product. I guess it was for Huawei...

Someone has to push the industry forward. I'm glad Samsung and Huawei are releasing these phones, even at those prices. Eventually, this tech will be more affordable and that's when we'll start seeing innovative uses for it. Plus, it gives Apple the push it needs to release their spin on it.

Apple is going to release some serious WATCH BANDS to show real innovation and compete with these gimmicks...

Don't forget a fresh round of emoticons.

Good on them for giving this a go. I'm wondering if there's a race to see which fails out of the two? I'm very happy for Apple to only do this once they've tested the heck out of things, even if that's a few years. In the meantime some people say Apple can't innovate, but forget they only release to the market when it's rock solid.

I curious what this means for the durability of these screens. If it can fold does that mean it is resistant to breaking if dropped?

Interesting, looks better than Samsung, but do you really need to know how they can turn this around so quickly? ;)

When you run your own business, responding to clients, at all hours of the day and night, in all locations, This sort of device is a must. I know some people worry about aesthetics, but power business users are going to love it. If I get back quickly and professionally to a client, the device can pay for itself on one enquiry converted to a sale.

You can see hands on videos that show the materials, creased screens, weird aspect ratios, and wonky software. The no app support part is just a guess, but considering Android tablets don’t have much app support as is, I doubt that developers are going to be lining up to develop apps for devices no one is going to buy.

I don’t see this being any better than a traditional tablet. Portability doesn’t change that.

Perhaps you misunderstood. I asked for YOUR experience with the device.

I don’t see this ever happening. Wouldn’t sell in enough volume.
It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Apple and the other manufacturers don't believe anyone would buy one so they don't make one, thus people believe it wouldn't sell. And if they do, they sell a gimped version that doesn't appeal to the very people who are asking for it.

The SE actually sold very well when it was introduced. it was almost on par with the 6s when the 6s was king. We have no idea if an OLED 4" phone (screen size, minimal bezel) would sell or not. Personally, I think it would. Rather than 3 phablets, Apple could easily have a small, medium, and large size phone lineup. Maybe 2 tiers in each category. That would be a rationalized product lineup.

With that crease it looks like a colorful shopping bag with Android UI printed on it.
Hope this doesn't fall into the same bag as 3D TVs.
Teething pains to come. Wonder what the durability will really be.

I think this is one of the strengths of these screens.
