Or a better solution for the price;

Buy an iPhone XS and iPad Pro. Just carry the iPad around in a bag instead of having a folding display.

I really really don’t see the appeal of these. All for progress but I can’t see a hinge on a screen ever being in a flagship. No doubt I’ll be proven wrong at some point!

I’m going by the what has been shown of the devices so far. Everything I mentioned has been shown in hands on videos. I don’t need hands on experience to know that they are junk. There’s a reason why they aren’t letting anyone out of their companies show them off, the experience is bad. I’m assuming your personal experience has shown otherwise?
Interesting that you find it acceptable to label a product you have not even used yet or even seen in the flesh junk, yet you find it unacceptable to call the Homepod junk which people have actually used. Please tell me more :)

And now we have Hingegate! Piece off junk. But that will likely be an issue with any brand of foldable phone for the near future at least. Plastic, like metal, will deform and wear overtime when bent, and eventually it will break. Personally I don’t see the allure of a folding phone. I would rather have a phone for phone stuff and a tablet for tablet stuff instead of a breakable device that won’t do either function that well, much less both functions. Major fail....

Thanks MacRumors for shining a light on the competition and showing that only Apple does it right! I put my complete faith in everything they do!

Technically impressive but stupid at these prices. I could have an iPhone XS and an iPad Pro and have $800 left over. You’re paying an insane price for device convergence.

That said, this will be very cool in a few years when the tech is both much more refined and much more affordable.

Nor did Apple fans see the need for a screen larger than 3.5", then 4.0", and now...

The point is to introduce new technology and get it out in the real world so manufacturers can gain experience with it. See what works, what doesn't, what to tweak, what to leave alone.

This just confirms Apple will release their take when the tech is more ready.

This makes Samsung’s look like a joke, if it didn’t already.

I love the $2,600 price point because now people can stop crying about $1,000 phones...wait, what am I saying? Of course people will still complain!

Can you please detail your experience with this device which has led you to conclude it's a major fail? Did something break on you while using it? Did something not function as expected? Something else?

One more thought: the Microsoft surface line is well reviewed and well liked, but it’s not come close to eating up the demand for either traditional laptops or traditional tablets. I think this could be the same.

Exactly.

But should we be surprised? It's a flexible plastic screen.

We had plastic screens on cell phones for years... but they were hard plastic. And eventually they were replaced by tough Gorilla Glass. A welcome improvement, IMO.

But this is a thin flexible film that appears to be simply resting on the support-surface below. Of course it's gonna bend, flex and wiggle around under your fingers. And crease.

That's the first thought I had when I saw prototypes of upcoming flexible OLED screens at trade shows.

I thought "I'll achieve its goal of enabling a foldable phone... but the tradeoffs include being a non-rigid, potentially creasable screen..."

And here we are...
And the galaxy fold has a plastic screen too, right? I imagine it’ll have the same issues. Take your time Apple.

It’s called material fatigue. Things can be designed for an “infinite” number of fatigue cycles. Infinite being defined as some number far greater than the number of loading cycles possible in the lifetime of service. Hard to know how these will hold up without specifics.

Apple could not release anything like this even if they wanted to so I would not call it a "move" on Apple's part.
[doublepost=1551045183][/doublepost]
That's just false. To their credit, Applw was one of the first to adopt capacitive screens (original iPhone)
Sure they could. Apple can buy whatever they need and Samsung WILL sell it to them.

Apple just won’t release something this terrible because it’s ugly and has way too many compromises.

It’s a GOOD thing Apple isn’t in the manufacturing business. It’s capital intensive, low margin, and terrible business in general. Much better to use suppliers, as we’ve seen.

Correct, but that doesn’t make this device any better for the tasks you mentioned. If it’s that critical for you to be able to put a tablet in your pocket, so be it, go wild and be the first to purchase, but I would rather my tablet be really good at being a tablet opposed to accepting a bunch of compromises just for portability. A creased screen certainly puts a damper on that tablet experience.

Eh, I don’t think so. The wrinkle isn’t likely to be a buff distraction head-on, but with lighting and the right angle it’s probably more obvious. Even still it’s worth the trade off of being able to app multitask and watch a movie or stream if need be and then find it up still have an amazing phone. Who expects retina quality on the first foldout screen? The first iPhone resolution was like 320 x 480 or something.

This post is not going to age well.

Why? The tech isn’t ready for prime time yet as evidenced by the hideous screen area at the hinge. I think the post is fine given the context in which it is posted.

Would you be making the same excuses about the wrinkle if this were an Apple product (whom everyone expect perfection from)?

Yep, it is. IOW all you're offering is your opinion with no hands on experience and you know what they say about opinions.
[doublepost=1551048591][/doublepost]
Just like large display screens until Apple decided to use them.

I’m offering facts about the products as we see them today. A creased screen is now an opinion? Feel free to be the first in line for this junk if you want, but these issues are clearly visible to anyone who watched the videos.

I think you are a bit lost. Yes, I can look at a video of a device with a creased screen and call it junk. I can also say the HomePod is not junk because of first hand knowledge and the fact that reviews say the same. Your two examples don’t correlate at all.

Huawei achieved better looking phone than Samsung by putting folderable screen outside, but I am sure Samsung also thought about that until you are potentially dealing with lot more cases with damaged screen than putting it inward.

Rather than trying to make a large phone larger with a hinge, try making a large phone more compact by using the hinge design. Phone screens we carry in our pockets are large enough but if I could fold my iPhone Xs Max to make it half as long, now you may have something.
