Do tell...how is it a compromise to use? Details please.
You need two hands to unfold it, it’s way too thick, it will be too heavy, it’s cumbersome, doesn’t solve any problems, the plastic screen is ugly, the fold is ugly, it runs Android, and it’s too expensive.

Please detail this distortion. Does it cause the screen to become dimmer at that location? Does it cause aspect ratio issues? Do the pixels deform? Is the picture less sharp?

Happy to do so! The reason you can see the waviness is because there is a visible distortion of the surface of the screen. The light is being reflected in different directions. This indicates that light will be projected at different angles into your eyes due to the optical properties of the display surface as it passes through the material, distorting the image being displayed. Screens need to be uniform in order to display an undistorted image.

From your angle. LCD looks like crap from the side too, or used too. The viewer of the screen won’t see so much refraction of light off the screen from their viewing angle. It will be noticeable but not in a crumpled wallpaper type of way like you’re probably thinking. And even so...it will be worth it to many. First iPhone didn’t have 3G connectivity and only ran on one network and people still bought it because it combines multiple devices. That’s what this is doing.
At the time, the iPhone was a beautiful, elegant solution to tons of problems. The software was 5 years ahead of everything. You know it’s true. This doesn’t solve any problems and screams gimmick.

My iPad is LCD and looks great at any angle.

I can see the screen in the video and it looks like crap. The plastic refraction issue will be incredibly obvious because it’s even obvious on camera.

Wait, you said it would be a compromise to use yet none of what you wrote are examples of that.

Uh, yes they are. I have to compromise iOS and run Android, I have to use both hands to operate it to its full potential versus 1 hand, I have to carry a thick device instead of a thin one...do I need to go on? LOL!

I didn't notice any distortion when looking at it head on. Does your experience with the device show otherwise?

Don't panic. Apple's about to show us how much Phil the Shill's ass can innovate.

Watch banda and emojis incoming in 3...2...1...

Many consider iOS a compromise. Do you use an iPad with a single hand? Was the original iPhone, at 12mm, a compromise? Does carrying an iPhone and an iPad weigh less (btw, based on your review of the unit how much does this weigh?) than this single device?

Correct, it’s about a product with too many obvious compromises to be valuable.

In your opinion. As someone who's stocked up on Apple products. Again, you need to consider that your perspective is not that of the overall market.

Check out the tech blogs. People are pretty psyched about this. Much like the notch, people seem pretty willing to look past this would-be-dealbreaker-to-you issue of implementation. Most people are complaining about the price.

I guess I’m interpreting it differently than you. I’m interpreting it as him being glad Apple hasn’t released a foldable screen with visible distortions. Not that it is smart of Apple to not ever release a foldable screen.

He's backtracked in his subsequent replies to me, so yeah. But he shouldn't have been in such a hurry to type an anti-anyone-other-than-Apple missive.

This is a sign of panic, the technology to produce foldable smartphones has still not come down to an affordable price, but to not be outdone by Apple and to get in first these two companies have decided to release it too early, get the product out no matter the cost and then work on the OS, for now just hack something together with the current OS, something Apple would never do.

When the time is right and a clear direction can be seen then Apple will release the worlds first affordable and practical easy to use with a OS design around a foldable screen to market, and will become the gold standard to follow.

Oh did you hold one in person? If so I apologize.

If the screen has enough “waviness” to it to reflect light in different directions enough to notice it instantly and clearly on camera, you WILL see that distortion when the device is 2 ft from your face. The human eye is INCREDIBLY perceptive and you WILL notice (and probably feel) the screen distortion.

Man, The same people on here defending this distortion are probably the same ones complaining the iPhone XR screen sucks because it misses being 1080 by like 8 lines of resolution and therefore the screen is total trash because they can see the resolution difference.

A foldable/bendable screen will have a reason for existence/usage for sure, but I don’t see a success in a mobile phone. It will end like 3D TVs if not applied to other gadget types. At the moment i just see it useful embedded in a watch like nike fuel band. Stuff like that...

You can tell a lot by looking at this thing that it will be a compromise to use. You have to unfold with 2 hands, it has a plastic screen, the front screen is too small, it is incredibly thick, it will likely be heavy, it runs Android, etc.

See how I can know a lot just by looking?

HomePod could not be heard without listening to one, and the sound quality is its most important feature.

See how you’re comparing Apples and oranges?
Sound quality the most important feature on a smart speaker? hmm could of had me fooled. Nevertheless my point was he was he thought it was fine to say the Galaxy Fold is trash (without even having seen or used one), yet when i said i thought the homepod was trash (i have used one and didn't like the sound signature and Siri was terrible) he got all defensive about it.

Thinking of practicalities such as where my fingers and hand may rest and not getting my main screen dirty, more cameras, reverse wireless charging and actual wireless charging, more ram for my money, better processor and gpu, better display, less likely to break, cheaper start off price, more protected, design being more luxury like...I go with the Samsung fold although I’m not buying a foldable phone until generation 3 since I prefer not to be a Beta tester...

So while some of you guys say Huawei is better..it’s truly not...Google has actually worked with Samsung on a foldable UI and application development as well. And who are those 2 companies that stole Samsung’s tech...one has to be Huawei..too bad they stole the old design.

From certain angles, perhaps. I would consider it a first-gen product tradeoff, similar to how OLED shifts colors under certain angles.
"product tradeoff"? More like a product deal-breaker if you're paying those prices. I still don't understand this fascination with the foldable screen at those prices. Just buy a higher end laptop with an i7 or even a desktop.

I’m not so naive to what goes on in the tech world. I tend to choose Apple products because they give me the best overall combination of performance, security, privacy, ecosystem, apps, and support, but I certainly consider my options when it comes to purchases. I think that people excited are more excited about the potential for such devices opposed to the devices just released. I can see the potential, but I don’t believe we are there yet from a hardware and software perspective. These devices prove that. As you mentioned, the majority of people aren’t going to be buying these prototypes. Tech sites have been quick to point out the same exact problems that I have described.

It's new technology so it's expected to be pricey. Just as the original iPhone was. As for not understanding the fascination I'm sure you said the same thing about large screen phone yet that's all Apple produces these days. Just because you don't see the fascination (if you want to call it that) doesn't mean there isn't benefit to it.

Let me know when you can pocket your laptop or desktop.

I agree with many's opinion here: the potential may be there, but they are releasing unfinished products at exorbitant prices. That display at 1:30 in the video, as many have said, is terrible.

It's not glass. Foldable glass doesn't exist... unless you heat it to a few hundred degrees, of course.

https://www.us.schott.com/innovation/ultrathinglass/

I wouldn’t comment on matters I didn’t know anything about. I was able to see the glass being folded right in front of me. Now maybe Huawei has not used it in this generation. But Schott are working with smartphone manufacturers so foldable phones with glass displays can be made in the near future. All glass isn’t equal...

Interesting concept, but it's the same issue as with S. F. — too thick to carry in a pocket.
