One important thing for Coolbook. The Air is Santa Rosa based, which means that it has a power saving feature that cuts the speed of the bus in half. Enable that (in a checkbox by the Mhz) and you get a choice for 600 MHz and 900 MHz; add these as options and you will see your battery life increase by about 45 minutes. My SSD has about 5 to 5.5 hours with these. It's also really cool.

yah i have those two frequencies added to my coolbook settings under battery mode and am getting a lot better battery life.

My MBA is showing 800MHZ, .9000v, 49C and still the bloody fans are at 6900rpm.

I am doing sod all. No hard CPU work. No Flash.

I'm beginning to hate this MacBook Air.

Spill coffee in it. That showed mine. The fans no longer spin anywhere near 6900rpm.

the only quick solution to the fan speed problem is to limit the max fan speed. i limited my max fan speed to 4800RPM. that is the max fan speed where the noise is still tolerable for me.

I'm doing the exact same thing, actually I'm setting my min and max fan speed to 4800rpm. This way I'm not constantly checking iStatPro (well, I still do sometimes, hehe) for the fan speeds, I always know its running at 4800rpm. That rpm seems to be a good speed, even in a quiet room it doesn't bug me that much (maybe thats because I have tinnitus ).

In addition, as I reported in a previous post, I think that the mba fan is quite ineffective anyway, in that the difference in system temperatures while running the fans at 2500rpm versus 6200rpm is quite minimal, maybe 3-5C at most. I would guess the difference in system temp between running fans at 4800rpm and 6200rpm is very very small.

hmmm interesting i never thought about changing the minimum fan speed before. however, the one drawback i see with setting both the min/max speed at 4800RPM all the time would be a decrease in battery life. unless you're having some really high idle temperatures, i'd probably just leave it on 2500RPM minimum. i've been using my mba for about 2 hours here at the library and it has never gone above 43C/2500rpm (normal web surfing).

I remember reading somewhere that in general the battery usage from the fan is quite minimal, so going from a min temp speed of 2500 to 4800 would barely affect the battery life. For me, it seems like a worthwhile compromise to know that the fan is always just spinning at 4800rpm.

Does anyone know how I can backup coolbook and reinstall it without having to reactivate it? I want to reformat my mba to clear up wasted space (printer drivers, localization, etc) but I already have coolbook installed. I'm afraid I'll have to rebuy it if I reformat. Anybody have experience doing this yet?

alas, i am not in america. no way am i gonna pay like $15AUD to get that.

a google internet search has not helped me much either, free version anyone??

even terminal hacks?? lol im desperate.
Not to be too much of a cad, but you have a macbook air, and you're sweating 15AUD? Seriously?

IIRC from the registration process, you're allowed one reset per machine, so you could opt for that approach.

wtf is a cad lol??

i dont own a MBA, i own a MBP. ;) they would all run the same.

conversion rates and everything is pathetic, and i dont own a credit card.
Cad, maybe a poor use of the term on my part. In general, a jerk (I.e. I'm being a jerk for questioning you spending 15 bucks on a program after you've spent the cash for a MBP). Make sense? I guess it's pretty much an old fashioned saying.

aahh ok yes, that does make sense.

cash for me is very scarce, i am spending 80% of my budget getting to uni everyday. i am desperate. + i cant afford another battery for my mbp, i thought maybe a free program would give me an extra hour or two. ahwell

That does suck. I've been pretty happy so far with the coolbook program. It's given me another 30-45 minutes, maybe more (I honestly haven't been tracking it that closely) since I've set the voltages down. For 10USD it's a pretty good price I think. I haven't seen anything free that does what this does. It comes with it's own driver, so it's more than just a tool for setting the voltage. Of course, I'm not a developer, so I could be wrong there too.

i think its a pretty amazing program, probably the first of its kind (apart from that speedit which i couldnt get to work). i might end up coughing up the dough for it eventually, worth a try.

have a nice day :)

I'm in Adelaide, Australia, and I didn't like having to buy CoolBook only because we shouldn't have to, the MacBook Air shouldn't have this problem.

But it fixed mine, and I get way more battery life, with the ability to run it down to 600 or 800 mhz, it automatically ramps depending on what you're doing too.

Seen the exchange rate?

$10 USD is $10.64 AUD now, just 64 cents more.

Not really gonna help you but got to work today only to discover my MBA had somehow turned itself on from standby and had been running at full tilt in a sealed back for several hours.

The machine was physically too hot to hold when I removed it from my bag.

Let's hope there is no long term damage.

hey mate, how did you end up paying for yours??

i cant really justify the $10.64, especially as though i dont have a credit card. 10.64 isnt all that much however i might just have to chuck it in.
