There has been talk that Hulu in general is going to be a paid service. Or should I say rumors.

Doesn't surprise me that Hulu is going paid. I am surprised if it does go that route that it took this long.

That’s not true at all. Hulu specifically blocks all mobile phone platforms at the moment and even game consoles like the PS3. Even media center software like Boxee and other XMBC flavors are violating Hulu’s terms of service by allowing users to download plug-ins for watching Hulu content.

Hulu’s owners don’t want the regular Hulu service to be on anything but your PC or Mac.

You might be able to get around that limitation by using user agent spoofing. I currently do so on my iPhone to force desktop versions of webpages to display. Of course this assumes quite a bit:
1. iPad can be jailbroken
2. User is technically savvy enough to set all this up
So I guess it wouldn't be a general purpose solution.

Dear Hulu,

you can charge 5$ for monthly access to your website, for all the shows. A lot of people will pay. All you have to do is open up access to people outside the USA.

It seems the iPad is little more than a trojan horse to get you to spend more money on subscriptions/services/apps.

No wonder it is being offered at an unexpectedly low price.

hah

If only Apple would allow Flash, this wouldn't be a problem. Free Hulu all you want.

I wonder what Apple would do If Hulu changed all of it's content to HTML5 (which Apple is said to prefer). Greed is a bitch.

I mean seriously, RETARDED... Aren't laptops "mobile devices" as well. I love how just because apple creates a game changer, then people discriminate on what it is or isn't. If Hulu wants to charge, they should charge across the entire platform.

It's been rumored for quite a bit that Hulu is going to start charging for its services.

I guess by charging specifically on the iPad they would make themselves a direct competitor to the iTunes tv subscriptions.

What people have not bothered to point out the is the already "questionable" quality of streaming videos via the Iphone Youtube app. If the bandwidth is already a compromise, who in hell would spend $$$$ for machine, $$/monthly for 3G access and $ for monthly content IF the quality is no better then what we used to get with questionable dialup internet access video from AOL back in the mid to late 90s? Someone must be retarded and have $$$$$$ to burn for a questionable experience. No fanboi can support this idea.

Perfect bait

Well looks like HP and Microsoft have perfect bait for iPad Customers, no Hulu on iPad plus Windows 7 on Tablets amounts to lost sales. If Hulu goes to an all subscription based model you'll see viewers drop significantly if the price is too ridiculous. Most people won't get Hulu on the iPad if they need to pay a subscription, and I'm sure once Hulu makes this app someone will hack it and put it on Cydia anyway. It's almost inevitable, Hulu has viewers because it's free. Unless they get rid of ads and make content available the day it airs Hulu will lose a lot of viewers on a subscription based model.

Lol

Even if it's accessible over 3G, I sincerely doubt NBC will get enough subscriptions to recoup their investment in the platform.

I can just hear the MacManiacs angrily typing away "WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR SOMETHING THAT IS ALREADY FREE ON THE INTERNETS?!!!1?! THE CONTENT BETTER BE COMMERCIAL FREEEEEE!!!!!1!1!!" :D

Good luck you geniuses @ NBC.

Folks can't make money giving things away for free forever.

Get ready for very limited free content in the future and a subscription required for any of the specialized information.

As for torrents and the like...the greater percentage of people aren't pirating info and would pay for content.

Honestly, for Hulu on my ATV...I'd pay $10-15 a month. I dumped DirecTV months ago.

This is not good news for someone like me. I don't know how I would live without Hulu. I might buy in for like 5 bucks a month, but no more. 5 bucks is pushin' it as it is. I hope Hulu realizes that people don't want to pay for TV shows they will watch once. I'm not saying I'd rather have the 16 mins of commercial an hour, but I think that the balance Hulu has right now is perfect. If they are short on revenue, add a short commercial at the beginning of the show after the "This show is brought to you with limited commercial interruption by So and so". And if Hulu is growing so much that they need more money, they should tell their sponsors that it is becoming a more valuable advertising outfit, and get more money from them a commercial.

iphone

how about the iphone. its easier to carrier around then the ipad, i might pay for hulu on that platform (depending on how much)

without reading through the thread - I'm sure it's in here a hundred times but:

Another monthly subscription... AWESOME.

Hulu Sh*t!

If Hulu wants to charge a subscription then there better be ZERO ads! In their defense... this is all new territory and these content suppliers really have no clue on what to do. Bottom line - it's all about supply and demand - if the demand isn't there for paid subscriptions, DRM ebooks, etc. then this kind of CRAP-OH-LAH will go away. Mark my words!

While I like the iPad idea, multiple subscriptions for content will start to add up. I'm not gonna end up with $300 a month in various subscriptions just to get content on my iPad.

Welcome to capitalism.:) Consumer protection agency was created to balance the conflict of interests, but I do not think they will come any time soon to risque not existing iPad users. Very logical for locked up platform, why not make money when you can. Nobody forced anyone into buying iPad.

Interesting, article refers to many iPad users as excited, when in reality there is none yet.

This is not good news for someone like me. I don't know how I would live without Hulu. I might buy in for like 5 bucks a month, but no more.

So...you can't live without it...unless it will cost you more than 5 bucks a month?:D

I might actualy pay $4-5 a month for this ONLY if they: Removed all the video ads so you can watch the shows without being interrupted AT ALL. Even YouTube ads tick me off on some vids but hey YouTube is free.

Bempoti123, that's where you're wrong

What people have not bothered to point out the is the already "questionable" quality of streaming videos via the Iphone Youtube app. If the bandwidth is already a compromise, who in hell would spend $$$$ for machine, $$/monthly for 3G access and $ for monthly content IF the quality is no better then what we used to get with questionable dialup internet access video from AOL back in the mid to late 90s? True Apple Fanboi's will be lining up front and center to drink more of the iPad kool aid and pay for the ultra special edition Hulu subscription package.

You should see the hate spewed at anyone on this forum who dares question the iPad as anything less than utter brilliance. Oh yeah, and the true fanbois also get right behind Uncle Steve in trashing Adobe Flash despite its near ubiquitous presence on the web. :D

I hope Hulu realizes that people don't want to pay for TV shows they will watch once.

Hmmm. Apple charges $1.99 per TV episode (non-HD) via iTunes. How are they doing? Furthermore, as free TV content disappears (and it is), how are they going to do in the future?

BTW...I would think that the point of charging for content would be to not have any commercials.

I mean, the shows I subscribe to on AppleTV/iTunes don't come with commercials. I wouldn't pay for them if they came loaded with commercials.

Folks can't make money giving things away for free forever.

True. But most people aren't made of money. I agree that the networks (who have plenty of money) are simply sucking their viewers dry. Here's what I think would be a much more agreeable solution: keep Hulu free -- but with low-bandwidth YouTube quality and ads. Have subscriptions available for people who would get the same content in true HD and without ads. After all, that's what subscriptions are supposed to be for: premium content. Then everyone is happy. People who want free TV get it, but just not at the same quality as the subscribers.

BTW...I would think that the point of charging for content would be to not have any commercials.

That's what was said when cable TV was first introduced. But don't underestimate the desire of a big corporation to make a buck any way it can.

Fail.

Watching tv on your computer is pointless for anything more than a few minutes. I don't use Hulu now because of it's spotty catalog. A paid version makes it even less appealing.
