You would need to jailbreak to make illegal u-turns.

I doubt will support jailbreaken, if want to watch a movie in car you have to pay for it, this is not just a computer, for your own safety he has to have 100% encryption and not support jailbreak, an hacker can kill you or use it as weapon against others

If I was Apple I would buy some percentage of Tesla and Space X, they have a lot of cash and I see a lot of future on Tesla and Space X but they will need a lot of money to keep with their projects.

Also I read that Tesla is going to have a battery for the house or business. This is a great idea.

My Idea!!

And all you thought I was nuts when I suggested Apple get into making electric cars, and drones and such. I think they read my posts and said, "Hey, great idea!"

Why buy Tesla when they can build a better car. If there's one company that can build a better product than Tesla, it's Apple.

Personally I can't see Apple straying so far from their core business...there's something fishy about this.

Maybe Apple looked closely at the car industry when developing CarPlay and saw that the future of electrically powered, self-driving cars and thought it was as close to their core as it is to the core business of the fossil fuel powered car manufacturers of today.

What are you going to do when the car is driving itself? Use an iPad? Why not build a computer into the car and make it a mobile workstation?

"iCar, the most portable Mac ever"

How about integration of iPhone, Apple Watch and Apple Car!

For starters (no pun intended!), Apple Watch can act as the key to the car. At the charging station, you pay for the charge by tapping the YES button that appears on the apple watch ( well, that will already be there once apple watch is released but with a modern charging station there can be a more intelligent conversation between the car and the charging station. If you are sitting in it, that is good enough as an identity and it can charge the cost of the charge to your account).

Just like Apple watch inherits your finger print identity when it is in contact with your person, the car can inherit your identity when you are in the car. For what? We will see. Actually the use cases are endless.

a few tech sites post some rumors about apple working on a car, the wall street journal picks up on these stories, and writes their own story about it. the tech sites see this story, and post about it, thinking that wsj got their story from a credible source, and the circle keeps going...

I bought my first new car (rather than getting a family hand-me-downs) back in October, and the process was a pain in the ass. The whole time, I was thinking to myself "I wish this was as easy as buying an iPhone." Of course, with everything that goes into car-buying, that's impossible. But I wish Apple could clean up that aspect of the industry in a big way.

That said, I cannot see Apple actually building an entire car to sell. What I would like is for them to at least sell the computer hardware and software to auto-manfucaturers. Imagine if the screens, sensors, controls, OS, everything was designed by Apple in California. It would be a thousand times more reliable and more useful than Chevy MyLink, Cadillac Cue, and whatever the other guys are calling their crappy systems.

Even if there isn't a full-fledged Apple Car, I would certainly check out a car that runs on Apple.

comes with a $1000 proprietary charging cable.

That new campus makes so much sense now, there is a big test track in the basement.

You forgot "2 foot".

No way it will be a minivan. It will be thin and flat, more like a magic carpet.

You all win the internet today. Thanks for for the luls.

I hope to hell this isn't where Apple takes a left turn into the morass.

Wait till you hear about their iWasher and iDryer program...

There is something very unnerving about these rumors (cause the automobile business is littered with business corpses who tried to break in)....but there is a history here too...remember that iTunes compatible Motorola phone (I think there were two versions, the ROKR) to bring iTunes to the mobile phone market and during development Apple got so disgusted with the current state of things that they just created their own. Apple just got finished working with Automakers to put iTunes (or whatever it was) in the cars (and was probably disgusted with the currrent state of things in the auto industry).

IMHO a paradigm shift is about to occur in that industry....batteries get cheaper by about 3-4% per year (as well as gain capacity) and that's expected to go on for the foreseeable future (even without breakthroughs which will happen) and electricity is only $1.25 gallon (gasoline equivalent) to fill up and there's virtually no maintenance on the vehicles...at some point (2020, 2025 etc.) as battery prices continue to fall, it'll become a no brainer to choose a plug in or pure electric and the companies that are ready to capitalize on that shift will sell a ton (Tesla will be there)...will Apple be there as well?

It will be cheaper than Tesla because of Apple's scale.

Agreed, Tesla car is way to overrated on this site, I live in Europe and here almost everyone never heard of tesla car, don't get me wrong i think is nice car but the price makes it unlikeable, as a rich person i rather just pay $10000 more and buy a Lamborghini or Ferrari

I'm with you. It's preposterous.

I don't buy this Apple making a car crap. Apple doesn't want to sell you a car, they want you to buy a car that's all Apple electronics and software inside.

But if they did build a car, dare I say it would be snappy?

Dunno about that, but for sure it would be amazing and fantastic.

This is such a strange ongoing story. I've been skeptical from the start, but this is particularly strange:

The car project, which is not focused on self-driving vehicles

And then we have pictures of a van with a substantial array of sensors, including what appear to be both fore and aft Velodyne HDL-32E rotating LiDAR units (they're the small cylinders sticking up like antenna). Those things are $30k a piece... not something you'd stick on there just for the hell of it.

I think it's more likely that they're just toying around with ways to make CarPlay better, so they have a whole team driving around and spitballing any crazy ideas they can think of. I seriously doubt they want to get into selling actual cars. This is just a luxury you an assign a hundred or so people to when you have billions of dollars just lying around.

Firstly, looking at the equipment fitted to that van test bed, if they are making a car it's more than just another car you drive, it will be self driving. You do not need a test van like that to just make another van!
And secondly, perhaps the battery technology would benefit devices, but we are talking a car or van here with lots of space, and a pocket device 6mm thin.

It will be cheaper than Tesla because of Apple's scale.

What scale? Apple would be starting from 0. They have scale on iPhones and iPads. Last I checked, cars aren't built on the same assembly lines.

I don't buy this. It would've been much easier for Apple to buy Tesla, a growing valuable brand establishing itself in the industry as the one to follow, who already has cars in production and who's company philosophy is already closely aligned with Apple's.

Musk has to want to sell. I don't see that happening.

It will be made in USA. If it was cheaper/better to make cars in China, Ford/GM/etc will be making their cars there, not here. In fact, foreign car companies make their own cars in the states! There's obviously a good reason for that.

What are you talking about? Ford alone has assembly plants in 24 countries. GM has 25. You should really stick to topics of consumer electronics. :D

Why buy Tesla when they can build a better car. If there's one company that can build a better product than Tesla, it's Apple.

What makes you think Apple can build a better car than Tesla? or even Tata or even Yugo for that matter? This makes no sense. Expertise in consumer electronics is not transferable. It's totally okay to be a fan, but at least express it with a hint of realism.;)

For the record, I think the idea of Apple building a car is pretty silly. I doubt they would ever venture down that road.

If they did I think it would be more like a BMW i3 than a Tesla. I test drove an i3 a few weeks ago and just fell in love with it. It's like nothing else out there. If only it had a longer range I would have bought it by now.

I better start saving up if I'm going to upgrade my car every year.

Given the current state of iOS and OS X, I'm not encouraged.

Yeah, I went there.

Straying off-topic a bit, but I gotta say, I agree with this. I'm not too sure about the quality of a car system they could create - when they've (IMHO) ruined iOS and made it worse than current Android software - and ditto OS X, except Windows is not better. But it isn't good anymore, either. Now they wanna do cars?

Fix what you've already tanked, pls.

I hope they don't use Apple Maps as their default navigation system. Somehow I doubt they'll license Google's services for that, though.
