A minivan though?
The van in the photo is a Dodge Caravan. Probably because you can fit a lot of equipment and engineers in the back for the tests.
Personally I can't see Apple straying so far from their core business...there's something fishy about this.
My guess is they're working on automotive-related technology that will be licensed to existing manufacturers like CarPlay. Those cars will get an "Apple Inside" badge.
Even more important is where will this car be made?
If they decide to release an Apple-branded car (less likely), it will be manufactured at an existing plant.

Apple can't get something as simple as maps/navigation right so it's kind of scary to think they're working on a car. Sounds like a "me too" reaction to Tesla and Google.

No thank you.

They would almost certainly have to farm out every piece of the car and nearly every other brand would be better at it.

I would assume Apple go to Toyota, Honda, Ford, or GM to build the thing, because they wouldn't want to go out of control on price.

Apple will return to the apple from the 1990s soon enough!!!!

Except they have $180 BILLION this time.

And Apple can make more money in 3 months than most companies make in MULTIPLE YEARS.

It's quite a different scenario than when Apple was approaching bankruptcy in the 1990's

Let Apple play. They're cooking something up. They have plenty of money to invest in various projects.

No... I don't think they are making a car. But I'm sure it's something that will fit right into their wheelhouse.

Auto electronics would be my guess.

Agreed, Tesla car is way to overrated on this site, I live in Europe and here almost everyone never heard of tesla car, don't get me wrong i think is nice car but the price makes it unlikeable, as a rich person i rather just pay $10000 more and buy a Lamborghini or Ferrari

The Tesla starts at £50k in the UK. It would cost a lot more than £10k to upgrade to a Ferrari or Lambo. Price wise the Tesla is more in line with a BMW, Merc or Jaguar. I'm actually considering buying a Tesla at the moment. I think it looks awesome.

The BMW or Merc you could get for the same price is just so much better though.

All of u who thinks Apple Car is bad idea I got one question, do you expect Siri (robot) to use the buss when she goes shopping?

Also if u don't like Apple phylosfie (new products) go to Nokia, i heard they are still making mobile phones

Breaking news with Apple iCar:

the car completely totals with slight impact, one of the worst impact test ever seen. Apple will defend it by saying that you should "drive it better".

Move to Norway for the perks. Plus, I'd rather trust a company that builds space ships than one with a building that resembles one.

I'm don't think that linking multiple times to a paid Wall Street journal article is very good journalism. It sounds like a business model but it doesn't sound like journalism.

If Apple made cars:

Every one would want one because its got a Time Machine in it.
Which is just as well because you can't change the welded on wheels, you need the time machine to go back and avoid the sharp objects.

Servicing would cost a fortune because you need a Genius to work on it.

It would only have one button.

You'd better live in a stormy area, because you can only charge it using the lightning cable.

The CD player would be an optional extra.

If you want something done right just do it yourself. That's what Apple thinks all the time. It's true, but they need to worry about brand stigma. You don't want chicken wings from pizza hut.

this is so outrageous. it's so far out of apples realm that they might actually do it. or it could strictly be for R&D.

This will be dope! Of course, we probably won't see it until 2020ish, though. But, nevertheless, I'm loving the idea of this. Apple has WAY too much money...hell, why not invest in something huge like a vehicle...they have the money to think BIGGER than computers, phones, tablets and watches right now.

Because that line of thinking leads you to become Sony. And not the good Sony, the bad Sony we have now: bloated, unfocused, and slowly slipping into irrelevance. "That company that used to make cool stuff back in the day." (Well OK, except for the Playstation, which is still pretty great.)

That said, I'm not necessarily against it, it's definitely an interesting direction with a ton of profit potential, but it's a risky path to go down. It took all Apple had to jump from desktops to laptops to phones to tablets, but jumping to cars is a whole different world.

Folks, I get the enthusiasm and would like to see how an Apple car would be like, but honestly, this whole thing makes no sense AT ALL... Why?
1. Apple doesn't have any automotive expertise and knowledge! Sure they can hire all the brain power, but still, they will miss the experience, that takes atleast a generation to have the right experience to conquer the market...
Look at Tesla, they started in 2003 and it took them 3 years to release the Tesla Roadster to the masses, but the Roadster wasn't that good and it took them until 2012 with the Model S to have something more serious to put on the road. That is 10 years that it took Tesla to release a decent, competitive and mass-appealing product.
Even Google started in 2005 with its driverless car project and till now has not sold ONE car to the public!!
2. Apple doesn't have anything remotely in their value-chain that would make them build a car! Where do they want to build that? Foxconn?
There is no contract manufacturing company that build cars! Sure they can buy most of the parts from companies like Bosch etc, but they need to do their own assembly of the car. And building such a production facility, hiring all the workers and train them, will take ATLEAST 2-3 years.
Then the most important question regarding their value chain, where do they want to sell an Apple Car???? Where do you bring the car for service??? In their apple stores??? Come on...
3. Apple will need to acquire a lot of licenses, permits and go through literally thousands of tests and inquiries to produce and sell a street legal car ALL OVER THE WORLD. This will certainly not happen in total secret!
4. Best of all, a car doesn't fit its customers, because most importantly, it will be too expensive and therefor become a total niche product! I don't believe for a second that apple will build a very expensive and complex value chain operation for a couple of thousand cars a year.

Economically it makes no sense for apple! This apple car idea could only work out if Apple would partner with somebody like Tesla or any other premium automotive company!

Anyway, if any of this is true, I don't believe we will see a car in the stores for atleast the next 10 years!

The BMW or Merc you could get for the same price is just so much better though.

Tesla seem to have all the tech in there and it's a nice looking car. I love that immediate burst of acceleration you get with an electric car. Plus being an electric car the UK government give you £5k towards the cost, I would pay no road tax and no company car tax. An equivalent BMW or Merc would cost me a fortune in company car tax every year.

If it's not self driving what's with the cameras?

Oh come on, Apple are not making a car! Software for cars maybe!

Just like Macs are cheaper than other computers and iPhones are cheaper than other smartphones because of Apple's scale.

Oh wait.

hahaha. A lenovo with gt 860m with 4gb of ram, 5th gen processor, 16 gb of ram, 512 of SSD all for 1299. and wow compare that to apples "high end" gt 750m with 2gb (2yr old graphics), 4th processor, and 512 for a whopping 2600
