Enron’s responses and behaviors during this are so on-brand.

If you have looked harder at the fluff pieces in the press over the last decade that is.

But in the minds of some. It’s all just 4D chess we peons can understand.

Tragic.

All this is because of one man’s ego.

Are you a salaried person who is working 70-75 hours a week and still getting paid the same as you were when you were working 40 hours a week? Thats what Elon is asking here. At this point about 75% of the people are gone, so everyone has a lot more work to do. They can't work tomorrow or this weekend, because they have locked everyone out until Monday, he's decided instead of 8-5 M-F, the hours are 7-7 M-Sunday, ie 12 hour days, 7 days a week. Why do I know he isn't just weeding out the lazy people, because he does this same thing (80+ hour weeks for salaried employees) at SpaceX and has been doing it for probably 10 years now. Its constantly voted one of the worst Work-Life balance companies. Tesla has so many complaints about its work practices that it would require a different thread.

I, and they, have their choice. I made mine, they can make theirs. Nobody is forcing them to stay.

There are so many different jobs at SpaceX and they all have different hourly mins/max’s, so you can’t umbrella the whole company with your 70-75 hour nonsense. That’s not factually accurate or responsible as a reply.
Many salaried workers do an average of 50-57 hours per week, and in crunch times, some workers may hit up to 80 per week with deadlines looming around space vehicle launch schedules.

Again, sign me up.

What a waste of money. He could have used that money to save humanity or eliminate world hunger. I feel really bad for the people working at Twitter and they have to deal with Elon. The fact it’s around Thanksgiving and holidays time makes it worst. I believe in Karma and Elon should too. 🧿🪬
Used the money to save humanity? What does that even mean? Lol

Eliminating world hunger isn’t a problem money can solve immediately. Money could solve it but it would still take time because the problem is unimaginably complex. Food requires crops, you can’t just will it into existence with money. Technologies created with money could help over time.

You’ve probably personally thrown away massive quantities of food that could’ve fed others.

Can we just rename this site TwitterRumors.com at this point? Honestly....
I get what you're saying and largely agree, but...

1. It's the editors' choice
2. This post has almost 300 comments on it (people engage with this stuff)
3. It's the editor's choice

Any employer that demands employees put their families second though is not a good employer. That’s one thing companies these days drive towards achieving and that is making sure their staff have a healthy work-life balance. Thankfully I live in a country where we get 32 days holiday a year and employers who can’t legally demand that you work beyond your contracted hours. They can of course ask but it’s a fine line has to be HR compliant.

Where do I sign up?

I already work about 70-75 hours a week at a pretty damn high intensity.

It’s his company now. He can run it how he sees fit.

And for all of you that are against this proposition of his or against his style…

How do you know he isn’t just weeding out the lazy a$$e$ up front that will flee at the mention of hard work? Afterwards, he will treat those that stuck by his side with a lot more leniency but still require production?

Just because you are somehow fine with working 70-75 hours a week, doesn’t and shouldn’t make it the norm. In fact, we thankfully have proper laws and that would be totally illegal here.

Why pay severance to get rid of dead weight when you can just chase them out of the door with the threat of hard labour.

Did you even read the email Musk sent? Employees who opt to quit get 3 months severance.

And before you praise him for being so generous, consider that this approach of chasing people off with threats of making the workplace unsuitable for people could result in lawsuits. Offering severance means they have to sign an acceptance letter that typically includes forfeiting any legal recourse in response to quitting/being laid off.

Hundreds of Twitter employees today resigned from the company rather than opting in to be part of "Twitter 2.0" under Elon Musk, according to The Verge. Musk earlier this week told workers that Twitter will be "extremely hardcore" going forward, with employees expected to put in long hours at high intensity. "Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade," he said.

Musk on Wednesday sent out a Google form and asked employees to respond "Yes" by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday if they wanted to stay at the company. Hundreds decided not to, and have said their goodbyes in Slack and on Twitter. Departing employees will receive a severance package.

When he took over Twitter, Musk laid off approximately half of the 7,500 employees that were at the company at the time, and since then, he has continued firing employees who have been critical of him, including longtime engineers.

Twitter employees that spoke to The Verge said that given the number of people that have left, Twitter could "start breaking soon" and that it will be "extremely hard for Twitter to recover."

With the exodus of employees, Twitter temporarily closed all office buildings and suspended badge access. According to Zoë Schiffer, Musk and his team are "terrified employees are going to sabotage the company."

In the final hours ahead of the deadline, Musk reportedly attempted to convince employees to stay. Bloomberg says that key staff were brought into meetings and Musk also walked back his in-office work demands. He had said that all employees needed to work from the office 40 hours a week, but today he said that working from home was allowed with monthly in-person meetings and managerial approval.

At the current time, Musk's first initiative is on pause as Twitter makes changes. Last week, Twitter introduced a more expensive $8 version of Twitter Blue that included a verification badge, and it turned out that debuting widespread verification led to account impersonation that impacted numerous companies.

I am very proud to say I rarely work over 45 hours a week and have a life away from work. If I was doing silly hours like some, I wouldn’t be admitting it.

Me: Say nothing, you're going to get banned for making Political post outside of Political News forum.

Maybe this was the plan all along? He gets his $58 billion payout from Tesla soon, he doesn’t need that so he will make a lowball offer to pay his debtors for Twitter and he will still be loaded.

meantime, no Twitter guys tracking him, posting memes of him, posting stuff about Tesla etc. Musk is an incredibly vain guy, hair transplants, plastic surgery, easily bruised ego etc, if he can destroy Twitter for a few billion bucks he would.

You cannot eliminate world hunger by throwing money on it.
It’s part of the capitalist system and how money is unequally distributed.
Our system needs the hunger and the poverty of many to feed a few.
Hunger can only be eliminated by creating a new economy that does not rely on exploitation.

Do you honestly think tech companies are paying these software engineers $500k+/yr and not work hard?

And what is happening in tech industry right now, especially in combination with WFH, is that they hired so many high-paying software engineers, that they don’t know what everybody is doing. Some of the software engineers are working multiple jobs at the same time by working from home even (and they get fired for it if they are being found out).

The fact that these Twitter employees were already complaining about working 40 hours per week is already damning how little they work at Twitter.

And really, don’t feel sorry for them. A fresh graduate in this industry can already make $200K/yr if you include sign-on bonus and stock options.

I bet most of his money was shoved up his ass by family

Good. Bye bye Twitter.

Elon is a dumber than people realize and we are seeing that.

If you work at Twitter, you better be looking for a new job. You’re going to lose it in a few months anyways when Twitter implodes and goes bankrupt.

In that case he should have waited for it to go into bankruptcy and pick up the assets on the cheap. Once it goes into bankruptcy his equity stake will be worth $0 and the debt holders will own the company entirely

1) Musk was very clear on his intentions before buying Twitter. Nothing that has transpired should be a surprise.
2) Twitter board adopts "poison pill" strategy to fend off Musk's hostile take over. While this sounds like the board is trying the save the company, it's basically a hedge - stop the take over and be lauded as heroes or Musk swallows the pill with a Tequila chaser and board walks away with a ridiculous amount of money.
3) The Twitter board accepted Musk's offer stating "best for shareholders". Most employees are also shareholders.

Nobody seems to holding the Twitter board accountable for any of this....

Billionaires made their money on the backs of good donkeys who brag about working 75 hours a week for someone else.
