If there is one thing I agree with Musk, is when someone told him exactly what you said. He asked said person to explain to him how he would do that.

He's still waiting for a reply.

Edit: here's the story

You can't solve all the world's problems for sure but there are a lot of things you could do with that money which would do a lot of good.
For example energy. Most of our problems could be solved if we had a supply of cheap clean energy- even desalinating water.
Well a few months ago a group in Oxford got fusion to work. Really, they did. First Light Fusion (FLF) they are called.
They used plasma a cheap crucible, a big gas cannon and they did it on the cheap and used gravity to aid the acceleration. The idea is to be able to commercialise it and have it fire every 30 seconds and produce enough energy to power a town (it would only be about the size of a chimney)
OK, it might never make it but they've proved concept and they have an idea of how to solve all the obstacles but they need about $1Bn to do it.
At the same time the Chinese are testing Thorium based reactors and if they get that working then it's 1000 years of clean, safe energy for everyone and we'll be paying them for the technology.
There are plenty of things he could have done.
(By the way I find it ironic he named his company Tesla and if Tesla were around he'd probably be able to figure a lot of these things out.)

On the other hand maybe we should just ask Bankman-Fried to check down the back of his sofa?

Are you a salaried person who is working 70-75 hours a week and still getting paid the same as you were when you were working 40 hours a week? Thats what Elon is asking here. At this point about 75% of the people are gone, so everyone has a lot more work to do. They can't work tomorrow or this weekend, because they have locked everyone out until Monday, he's decided instead of 8-5 M-F, the hours are 7-7 M-Sunday, ie 12 hour days, 7 days a week. Why do I know he isn't just weeding out the lazy people, because he does this same thing (80+ hour weeks for salaried employees) at SpaceX and has been doing it for probably 10 years now. Its constantly voted one of the worst Work-Life balance companies. Tesla has so many complaints about its work practices that it would require a different thread.

Sorry but in Australia this is standard practice in the corporate space. Sure, work at a supermarket you and your manager both minute watch.
Work in a big bank or law firm you’re going to get pumped. That’s the deal. I know it’s the same in NY, Singapore etc.. something different where you are at?!

So politics in first sentence then no politics in second one, got it. After 2 weeks of chaos with firing rehiring, then a childish macho ultimatum seems like quite a few employees got their Blue Check Mark on Quitter. Now lets see if Musk try’s to weasel on the severance offer.
There is no contradiction in pointing out the fact that employees politicized their jobs, and then saying that outsiders’ reactions to all of this shouldn’t be political, it’s just a matter of observation. Also, “politics” can mean something beyond the typical concept of governmental left-right politics, i.e. “office politics”. There is quite a lot of politics going on at Twitter in that sense.

I think it’s truly strange that so many people are so emotional about this. It’s something that’s happening, it’s a topic of conversation, but to get so bent out of shape and be so filled with hatred for this guy is very odd. To me, Musk is not the one coming off as unhinged in all of this, frankly.

It’s not even worth it anymore. Peace & family time over anything. Twitter will end up like MySpace or it will go bankrupt. It’s coming!
How can we make the assessment, from the outside, that it’s not worth it anymore? Obviously some people feel it isn’t, others feel it is. Like any job.

Twitter was a financial disaster before Musk. This seems to get lost, frequently. And if Twitter did go down in flames, I wouldn’t be heartbroken; social media is a blight on humanity.

Before that happens. Elon will be going to prison or he might take himself to planet Mars. Oh yeah, he will claim it right away.
What has Elon done that makes people want him to go to prison? This is exactly what I was referencing in a previous comment of mine; I don’t understand why he brings out such emotions in people. Why does Musk deserve to be in prison?

I can’t believe people worship this guy. It’s unreal.
Worship no, but trying to understand what he is trying to achieve here, and approve it, YES. Twitter is full of spoiled and mediocre workers that are earning big money for essentially doing nothing. There are some videos on the internet where Twitter employees themselves share what was their normal work day. Elon wants to transform Twitter and to do so, he must first cut the fat accumulated through the years and stop practices that have been in place for many years. This hurts. I'm optimistic that he will find the way. There are many many great professionals all around the globe that are eager to join Twitter in this new transformational phase. People that are ready to work very hard to achieve excellency.

Or a guy who makes self driving cars
As long as an attentive driver is required behind the wheel, he hasn't made "self driving cars" in any meaningful way.
I'll believe it when robo taxis become a thing beyond a few highly constrained areas.

I do like that Tesla has done a lot to increase the popularity of electric cars, though.
amazing rockets
They are great! But I'll believe the Mars colony claims when I see it happen.
and free speech (open source code).
Can you show me an actual case where an "open source" product from a Musk company has helped another company? Not saying there isn't, I'm just curious.

Desalination has been done in Israel for a few years, it could be an alternative for sure. The money could be used for a lot of things that would improve the world as a whole, not erradicate world hunger in its entirety, but reduce its impact significantly as well as other problems.

Problem of the world is man.

It’s a non essential tech company - if it folds it folds - Elon is here to save or bury it - either way the journey so far with him has been perfect popcorn moments all round….keep on going boss !

Hundreds of Twitter employees today resigned from the company rather than opting in to be part of "Twitter 2.0" under Elon Musk, according to The Verge. Musk earlier this week told workers that Twitter will be "extremely hardcore" going forward, with employees expected to put in long hours at high intensity. "Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade," he said.

Musk on Wednesday sent out a Google form and asked employees to respond "Yes" by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday if they wanted to stay at the company. Hundreds decided not to, and have said their goodbyes in Slack and on Twitter. Departing employees will receive a severance package.

When he took over Twitter, Musk laid off approximately half of the 7,500 employees that were at the company at the time, and since then, he has continued firing employees who have been critical of him, including longtime engineers.

Twitter employees that spoke to The Verge said that given the number of people that have left, Twitter could "start breaking soon" and that it will be "extremely hard for Twitter to recover."

With the exodus of employees, Twitter temporarily closed all office buildings and suspended badge access. According to Zoë Schiffer, Musk and his team are "terrified employees are going to sabotage the company."

In the final hours ahead of the deadline, Musk reportedly attempted to convince employees to stay. Bloomberg says that key staff were brought into meetings and Musk also walked back his in-office work demands. He had said that all employees needed to work from the office 40 hours a week, but today he said that working from home was allowed with monthly in-person meetings and managerial approval.

At the current time, Musk's first initiative is on pause as Twitter makes changes. Last week, Twitter introduced a more expensive $8 version of Twitter Blue that included a verification badge, and it turned out that debuting widespread verification led to account impersonation that impacted numerous companies.

He's just weeding out the lazy rif raf....well done Elon 👏

Just because people work like that does not mean it's right because I hear that argument alot when when it comes to the corporate world, corporates expected to work 70+ hours a week and that is the norm therefore everyone else is expected to follow suit. No.

I love how everybody here is suddenly a business executive and has experience running one of the, if not the biggest social media/news sites in the world. I see a lot of haters that sound real jealous and salty of someone else's success. Who CARES what he does to Twitter? Who cares if he blows it up and shuts it down?! IT'S HIS TO DO WHAT HE WANTS. Do you also put in your 2 cents when Sears or The Good Guys closed up? Lots of Monday morning quarterbacking going on. Not sure why so many people let his success or failures get under their skin so much. It's HIS money, HIS company, and HIS life. Stop always being haters and rooting for failure. Those Twitter employees that he is expecting hard work and commitment from....they get paid A LOT of money and have a ton of other perks besides just salary. Id' expect them to commit and work hard too. People are complete babies nowadays. Everyone EXPECTS everything to be given to them and everyone gets so offended over everything.

Maybe your advice could be used to let you get some sleep. Just step away from the keys. LOL 😂

As long as it's clear in the contract, then it's fair game. The employees know what they are going in for, and can make better decision. At least it's not in many other companies who said 40 hours week but then implicitly require you to be 75 hours week. I'd rather see the company being upfront about the working requirement and condition.
