I’m so curious as to how Elon can possibly lead his other companies like Tesla. Because this “everyone must work to the bone” attitude isn’t new; he’s said it before as well, and vocally said people doing the “9to5” will be let go. Ok, cool, do what you want if it works for you. But WHO is signing up and agreeing to this? In an industry that was - until only very recently in this recession - BEGGING for workers? Who are these people who see a glut of attractive roles and say “mmm yes, I’m going to go for the one that demands I don’t have a life.”

Also, the aim is to hire employees with experience and background in what you hire them to do so you don’t have to train them. In STEM, this is very easy. I know in sales, this can be hard, but still, it’s commission based so you don’t need to pay new hires much if at all.

SHRM is filled with what type of people?

Probably:

1. majority women, which means they tend to seek stability, community, and social benefit instead of meritocracy

2. non-employers or company owners, which means they don’t think strategically for shareholder interests alone. They also lack the capacity to see the picture from above.

3. political affiliations and social leaning tend to be leftist, or post-modernist or populist, or socialist or communist, or tend to be pro union.

4. tend to have non-STEM backgrounds with no rigorous Statistics skills. They can’t reason like a Statistician or Econometrician. When they draw conclusions, they cherry pick data, assume correlation equal causation, or ignores if the difference is statistically significant, or fails to analyze if the regressor is statistically biased.

Those people do research to fit their agenda or interest. It’s like big tobacco companies doing research saying the more you smoke the longer you’ll live.

I see you've never had to clean up a mess like that. Pray you never do. And no, you can't hire people with the same experience if you run your own custom platform. You *will* have to train them.

I've been on the wrong side of a huge RIF. (the side that stays.). And all I'm talking about is STEM, that's all I know.

The issue you had was probably a landslide layoff, wasn’t it? If so, that’s bad. Firing should happen constantly but inconspicuously.

Another important point is never have keystone employees that you will potentially fire. Always have A/B roles for every position.

The third point is to shuffle employees under different managers once in awhile and/or rotate them to different locations. This is to prevent a small amount of managers getting too close to their subordinates and gaining too much influence in the company creating cult like teams, which will make auditing hard. This is also necessary to prevent corruption with local distributors and suppliers, etc. If an employee declines to be relocated at least once every 3 years, fire them.

All this drama also makes me appreciate Tim Cook's stable hand at Apple all this while. Sure, it was amazing watching Steve Jobs go on stage and announcing how they are going to change the world (and I still get thrills down my spine when I see him remove that MBA from an envelop), but multi-orgasmic stage theatrics is no longer what enthuses me these days, but watching a company continue to execute like clockwork day after day after day.

Every year, Apple commits to updating their iPhone and Apple Watch, 4 separate OSes (iOS+iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS), as well as updating / refreshing their growing hardware lineup. It takes discipline to keep everything running in lockstep, and I will take boring but competent over a firebrand orator any time of the day.

Heck, look at the state of the tech industry right now. Which company isn't imploding?

I'm sorry I have 35 years of experience in STEM and your entire premise is COMPLETELY and UTTERLY WRONG. It costs us over $5K just to find and inboard a new engineer. It costs us 30-40K to get them up to speed, and thats not just my current employer in fact most Engineering firms would be happy with those numbers. Elon has just paid over $250 Million in severance and crippled the company by losing 90% of the personnel and you think its a good plan. There is no way they evaluated the 7500 employees and 5000 contractors in the 7 days he owned the company before he fired over 7000 of them, and now half the rest are gone after #QuitFest. They have lost alot of advertising and will lose more, noone wants to be part of the mess this has become. I've seen big companies hurt themselves hugely by doing one of you 10% firings, because they did it quickly, and didnt understand how things worked. Yet this is the most crazed firing event in the history of US business. He paid $44B for a company so he could have weed day in the share price when he could have gotten it for billions less, then instead of actually just paying for it, he gives the company over $13B in debt so now, they have to pay over $1B a year in payments which now makes the company not profitable, he then pays out over 1/4 of a billion dollars to give people 90 days severance, all while slashing 90% of his personnel, without any type of worthwhile review. You don't fire everyone from a section, unless you don't need that section, however we know he has done that in at least 4 cases.

I'm curious how this plays out.

Mass firings/leavings are typically very bad for regular companies. But from what I get, people weren't doing much at twitter (which is my experience for many big companies) and a considerable amount of staff was just busy keeping people from using the plattform.

I just made myself a twitter account yesterday. As many people are getting unbanned, there will probably be an influx of content.

Tesla gave us semi-usable BEVs (more than any traditional carmaker came up with) and SpaceX dominates the industry. Despite having some bad ideas (e.g. hyperloop), Musk seems to know how to run a company.
 
My company is actually incorporated in the US, I just applied the European labor standards to it because I want to. I was an employee long enough to understand what makes a terrible boss and how important life/work balance is.

If anyone in your company needs to do overtime, you suck as a manager.

It really makes me sad when I see so many posts (from corporate US?) where people seem to think its all normal. It really isn't normal, it doesn't have to be normal. Sure there may be times we all have to roll up our sleeves but what Elon is doing and how it goes about it is just wrong. No self respecting person should put themselves as an employee in such an environment.
 
I always have seen Twitter as the trash can of the internet. Only a guy like Musk could buy it. And there are even people who consider Musk as a genius…

My man - if you're going to hide behind the "everything is subjective" argument, then at least have the intellectual consistency to apply it to yourself as well.

In other words, you can't possibly correct anyone with that argument, because by your own definition, it's indicative of what *you* perceive, not the truth.
 
We can only hope that all the institutional knowledge that led to the myriad of technical problems, bad hires, one-sided censorship, and the billions of dollars Twitter was losing gets lost forever.

Twitter was a sinking ship. If Elon can’t save it, who cares? It was broke and going out of business anyway thanks to the collective effort of these employees, that for whatever reason, you seem to think was contributing so much to their “success.”

Hundreds walked out instead of electing to work harder. Let that “sink in” :p
So employees should welcome happily worse working conditions just because Musk says so, right?

Where does that path end? Say Musk gets his way and he employs half the people working twice the hours. Then other companies will do the same. Suddenly half the work force is unemployed.

Then enlinghted armchair analysts will blame the unemployed for not looking harder for a job.

But luckily all Musk is doing is shooting himself in the foot.
 
Apart from the mass firings - which were going to happen under the past administration anyway, most of the news from Twitter is minor.

Actually almost all the Musk tweets are minor.


The war cry about working conditions is how it is at his other companies.


The verification debacle was a debacle. He has been rehiring staff with apologies btw. I hear many of his transition team are leaving so things may get quiet for a while.


I’m still figuring out why the government wants to keep an eye on him, unless he starts outsourcing jobs to India and that could be the security threat?


Musk is about to get a huge windfall from SpaceX and the Twitter purchase price stings less now.



Everyone is talking about Twitter and traffic is way up…

Fox News is right wing but you fail to mention that the other 90% of media: CNN, NY Times, WaPo, Reuters, USA Today, MSDNC, ABC, NBC, CBS, AP News, Vice, Buzzfeed, etc. are all left wing propaganda machines.

If you’re so enamoured with Musk and his antics, why don’t you go work for him? Work the long hard hours and sleep on the floor like an animal while having no life outside of work and bowing to whatever his whim of the day is, if that’s what you think is an admirable existence. Then check back with us in a few months, if you even last that long.

Edit: It seems you’re on another “vacation”. We’ll wait.
