I know a couple people in Tampa who are not remotely happy about Maria. They sustained minimal damage to their homes because the areas they live in were artificially raised, but they suffered some wind damage. Unless I'm mistaken, a cool down in ambient weather should kill a hurricane or soften its blow, is that correct?

The gulf stream is really warm right now and I don't think the waters cooled off too much from Irma.

Maria is now a cat 5.
