There are already some places that have cancelled school. Idiots. I hope it ends up being like nothing and these people feel like idiots when they are making these days up in july.

Maybe they'd rather be called idiots for being cautious than murderers for taking it to lightly. People who don't take it seriously enough are the ones that put first responders in danger on rescue missions.

Hopefully we don't experience too many casualties...

A small town next East Boston - Winthrop.

Very near to Stoughton? Just heard from a buddy there...So far he's had intermittent power, but no evac. yet....He's around 25 Miles from the coast. Hope you folks ride this one out safely.....I can't understand these people who go to the beach to watch....They must have a sdeath wish. Good luck to all...I know a lot of MR members on the East Coast. Fingers crossed.

Stoughton is like 15 miles or so to the south-southwest of Boston. Winthrop is right on Boston Harbor just east of Logan, a couple miles east of Downtown. Hope it stays dry for maflynn.

Your buddy in Stoughton will be fine. It's about 40 minutes from where I am, but it's pretty far inland. Between that and the fact that we are on the dry side, flooding shouldn't be a concern for him.. just wind.

Not really.

Winthrop is situated next to East Boston and Revere.

good luck.

My winds are still picking up and the barometer dropped 1 more tick to 28.6. It is getting closer to the 1992 storm in wind speed and pressure. Local news has the storm to hit a little more south of Atlantic city which will be a bit more helpful in Howell NJ. Also they now say it will touch shore at 5 or 6 pm vs 7 or 8 pm. Once again good luck to all. Oh I found a decent link for power outages in NJ and in CT

Winds are picking up to about 25-30, rain has not been an issue, just a driving mist. So far CL&P has been keeping up with the outages but the winds have not really picked up like they will once the center passes.

The barometer continues to plummet, the center is 940 mb and right now I am showing 982.

good luck.

How long before this crane drops from 65 story building on West 57th?

east river (NYC) is still under control, about 1-2 feet margin.
rain is steady but moderate, wind less then i thought.

there are actually joggers running on the waterfront

FDR is closed (but not flooded yet, at least in my area), but the queensboro bridge is open.

will see tonight with the tide, but so far, so good.

p.s: some guy on a jet-ski just zoomed by!

my barometer dropped below 28.5 which is the lowest it goes.

I would think it is 28.3 as there are no numbers but it does have an ability to go a was under the 28.5 mark. So far the winds did not get as bad as 1992 I am hoping the worst of the wind is over. I don't think we past 60.

I know lots of rain and wind to come, but sustained 40 is much easier on us then sustained 65!

has Milton been evacuated, I went to school their and it's close to the shore...
I wonder what I would've done... checked into the Fairmont Copley Plaza :p although they don't have an indoor pool...

My barometer is staring to go up, dropped to 979.4 now back to 980.2

In the first major U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue operation associated with Hurricane Sandy, the Coast Guard has rescued 14 people from life rafts in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 90 miles southeast of Hatteras, N.C. The search continues for two people who remain missing from the crew of HMS Bounty.

The owner of the 180-foot, three-mast tall ship HMS Bounty, a replica of the original British transport vessel built for the 1962 film “Mutiny on the Bounty” starring Marlon Brando, contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina after losing communication with the crew late Sunday evening. The 5th Coast Guard District command center in Portsmouth, Va., subsequently received a signal from the emergency distress position indicating radio beacon, or EPIRB, registered to the Bounty confirming the distress and position.

any word on roosevelt island? I lived there last year during Irene and needless to say Sandy looks much much worse. I am northwest of the city in orange county now. Electricity has flickered a few times. I'm sure power will go out sometime tonight.

Real quick tip on tropical cyclone vs. post-tropical.

A tropical cyclone gets it's energy from the heat of the ocean. It rises up through the center of the cyclone creating a small circular area of high winds.

Post-tropical gets energy from the difference between low pressure and high pressure systems . When Sandy became post-tropical a low pressure system crossed through the center of the hurricane and there was/is a transition of where the energy comes from. Post-tropical winds tend to be more outstretched over a wider area. It's not just in a small area. This is why CT. and Delaware are getting really high winds now.

Basically a hurricane just connected and mixed in with a north-easter creating one huge low pressure system with very high winds.
