I would be just fine. Although I have both a stock and a JB iPhone, one should always be prepared for change.

You can do that with AirPlay or with the hdmi connector. :?

Yeah but she did it with my hdmi cable laying around... no special connectors needed that wouldnt already be present... I am not saying you can't do it with the iphone I am just saying they made it so easy for her to do it that if she forgot her cable while traveling she could just go to any walmart/target/whatever pick up a cable for a couple bucks and enjoy a movie.

Not a make or break issue but its the easy things like the hdmi port that make me interested in the phones. I still go with android is a little too buggy and the phones are ugly and so I am with Apple till they take away my ability to jailbreak for good.

The way it is designed was to have developers create apps for the phone. For some reason(not your benefit) Apple decided some apps aren't suitable for the app store.

So yes your phone works fine the way it was designed, but can work better.

How much is what I'm curious to know. I still have never seen a reason to jailbreak. Along with all the headaches & work that comes with it. What can't my phone do now that I would need to jailbreak it? I'm seriously wondering? My iOS devices work great & I have a lot of capability. Cosmetics aside, what would become more functional?

My jailbreak must-haves are iFile and My3G, and I wouldn't want to go without biteSMS. A system-wide file manager is something that can't be replicated with an App Store app, and I don't see Apple allowing FaceTime calls over 3G any time soon.

I doubt average users would use iFile, but My3G is worth looking into. That said, if you can live without it, you probably should. Upgrading your software version is a real pain (but worth it for me).

Tweaks

Backgrounds
Change of look
*Different OS

You have no idea how much what Cydia can offer until you jailbreak. Check youtube videos and you will see the unique features in Cydia.

* have been shown that mini versions of android, windows 7 , mac and windows phone 7 does work, who would NOT want this versatility?

What headaches? What work? Most of the recent jailbreaks have been a 5-second process. Even if you're using something like Sn0wbreeze, it still takes 5 minutes to do. It's simple and easy.

And there aren't any downsides to jailbreaking. It doesn't permanently alter your phone. You don't like it? Simply restore the phone and you're good to go. The benefits of jailbreaking outweigh the cons OVERWHELMINGLY.

Things like SBSettings, which gives you quick access to every kind of toggle you can imagine. Wifi, Airplane Mode, turning off 3G (which you can't do now with a 4S)...these are all things that are there with a swipe of the status bar (it drops down similar to how the Notification Center does). Instead of having to wade 2 or 3 menus deep into the Settings App, you can just do what you need from anywhere on the phone (including the lockscreen).

I could go on and on, but I encourage anyone to give it a try and then tell me it doesn't make your phone more useful. There's no question about it.

^^ Agreed

Monkeylui....I encourage you to do some research before claiming that jailbreaking a phone requires: "all the headaches & work that comes with it"

Like the other poster says, the jailbreak process takes usually less than 5 minutes and the only thing that could possibly take up time would be browsing all the brand new features you now have on your phone and installing new apps.

True, there really is no need to jailbreak, however it does open up your phone to a world of better options for you.

Sbsettings (toggles and info without having to go into settings)
Tethering
iBlacklist (block telemarketers, collection agencies, charity calls, ex boyfriend/girlfriends :D )
LockInfo (have all of your calendar, weather, notifications on your lockscreen. Again, no need to go into calendar or weather app to check your appts or forecast)
OpenSSH/ iFile (allows you access to your phones file directory to modify anything you want to, add or delete files)
3G Unrestrictor (anything that your phone says you cant do, or cant do well without wiFi you can now do over 3G (better youtube videos, downloading larger files, etc.)
Winterboard (themeing)

These are just a few of the more popular apps and the ones I use. You really should check out what youre missing before making assumptions. You can always go right back to stock should you not like it.

I would buy an Android, I may anyway the way apple is so stale. Shoot this is the same apple I have had for four years now, I am geting tired of old rotten fruit.

I find it hard to accept that the iPhone is still the best phone if it can't be jailbroken. I was not with a jailbreak for a month and it was weak sauce (I needed my SBSettings and OpenSSH badly) I couldn't wait for an untethered anymore and tether JB'ed my iOS5 iphone4, and GLAD I DID. Tethered is still definitely worth it if you don't want to wait any longer. (the idea left a bad taste in my mouth, but so far no issues, didnt even have to tether yet)

edit: plus with the "Semi-tether" feature in cydia (w/ a required source), makes it even less of a PITA in case it things don't go as planned.

So the answer to this question is: I'd go to Android where rooting still exists, simple as that.

I agree completely ... that's what made me think about this idea and post this topic. Without theming (stock icons, home screen, lockscreen and springboard is SO ugly and outdated), bitesms, and sbsettings to name just a FEW, I would be compelled to give Android a shot.

I like that Apple has incorporated some jailbreak apps and ideas, but they really need to add some like bitesms, sbsettings and find at least some way to allow theming.

I needed to move a bunch of photos and files from my iPhone to my non 3G iPad and I was not around wifi. I tried about four different official appstore Bluetooth apps which were all painfully slow and many of them caused corruption in the file transfer.

I finally realized that iFile supports Bluetooth transfer. I could simply select a ton of files and send them to the iPad in a few clicks.

I could probably survive without the JB. I don't do themes or anything.

The most nifty stuff for me are Infinidock, Terminal, and being able to use OpenSSH . I haven't used too much else "extra" stuff.

Honestly at this point, since I've invested into the iOS Eco system, if they added "sbsettings" to the notification center, I could live without a jailbroken iPhone.

Oh, the unlimited skip hack for pandora is becoming a necessity. Not sure if that exists on android but if it did that would be one less thing to worry about.

Couldn't agree with you more.

THe only thing that has kept in iPhoneSuckLand is

Apple TV (mirroring/mirroring and remote)
iMessage (wife and most friends have iPHones)
Siri.

I may jump ship to an S2, but I think i rather wait till an S3 comes out or maybe the Prime.

Lack of updates pisses me off of android, but with the custom ROMS that is a no problem situation.

The lack of a jailbreak almost made me jump ship, but I stayed after I saw MuscleNerds tweet.

Im pretty sure the iPhone 4S will never be jailbroken. iPad 2 has A5 chip also and look how difficult it is to jailbreak even 6 months or more after its release. Thats why Ill stay with my iPhone 4 until I see a good Android to buy, even though I prefer iOS a lot more.

Jailbreak is a complete MUST in iOS. Im sure every year it will become more and more difficult to jailbreak... It will end sometime.

It's more difficult, but the dev team doesn't seem to be losing steam anytime soon.

Both Apple & Jailbreak teams are becoming smarter.

There will definitely be an A5 5.0 jailbreak, but I will agree I'm concerned about the future of jailbreaking. I won't stay on iOS without it, unless we get Bitesms, theming, sbsettings (to name a few requirements).

And to add to that ... if Apple TRULY wants to steam roll Android, then I think they will be forced to allow SOME level of customization and root access. It seems that a PRIMARY reason people want to switch from iOS to Android, is strictly for open-ness or customization (or screen size, which inevitably will be cured with the next iPhone in the short-term).

I'm not being stubborn, but if Apple prevents jail breaking, then I'll simply move to a phone in which I can make it operate exactly the way I want - for which the only alternative seems to be Android.

The biggest reason I see people rooting android is to get a stock android os, removing the crapware that the carriers & hardware manufacturers put in there.

The headaches of just having to do it, then fretting over the updates that might break the jailbreak, then having to jailbreak it again. I'm not claiming anything, that's a fact. I have other things to do with my time.

The rest of your post I approve of. Thanks for letting me know about it. Maybe I'll try it out on my no longer used 3G.
