Kia was a contractor for Ford for many years. It’s why their logo is an oval with the same shape and proportions as Ford’s: that makes them interchangeable for different markets. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Actually, it was more of a partnership between Mazda/Ford/Kia where Kia built cars that were badge engineered for markets, with some Kia produced cars sold as Fords in the US but Kias in Korea. Ford even tried to buy Kia but was outbid by Hyundai when Kia went bankrupt.

Partnerships that result in badge engineering are't unusual; Mazada and Ford have done it, as have Mercedes and Nissan.

Apple and Porsche seem like a natural fit. Both are known for excellent products which are at the top of their respective markets, and both are in a similar price strata. Audi might work too. BMW also has a long partnership with Apple, so I’m surprised that Apple didn’t reach out to them...

Infiniti = Nissan, which isn’t well suited. Not to mention Infiniti is an also ran in the US, which is presumably where the car would first debut.

Porsche is just volkswagen. It’s not like there’s something magic about what factory you use - boxsters, for example, have been made by Valmet and in a Volkswagen plant. The difference between a VW Golf and a 911 is the design, the materials, the components, etc., not who pays the rent on the factory and the paychecks of the factory workers.

I like Apple, but that’s absolutely what I expect that partnership to look like. Not much to gain for Hyundai.
But I think the whole idea of Apple entering the car business is going to fail anyway.

True. After all Hyundai has learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent car. PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They’re not going to just walk in.

(The responses to this will determine who knows history and who does not :) )

Wasn't that somewhat the reaction of the then Palm CEO to the iPhone?

I wasn’t quite sure of the exact wording, but I remembered him being „sceptical“.

Yep. And he wasn’t the only one. But people said Apple would fail with ipod, iphone, ipad, and even apple watch. No reason to expect the car to turn out any differently.

Don't forget the Arm chips for Macs. They also will never be able to beat Intel (or AMD, depending of the colour of fanboy) in making a computer chip. There's just no way an iPhone chip will beat Intel!!!

I know. “Contractor” was bad wording on my part, but the part about interchangeable logos was the important bit because they Kia used to exist only as a brand in Korea. They mostly existed to make cars for others, mainly Ford, since Korea is was a tiny car market without much money. I don’t know if they really want to go back there for the world’s largest company.

Rebadging exists today even for established brands, but they’re not major models (Mercedes truck = a Nissan, Toyota rebadges the Mazda 2, Renault repackages Nissans (but “the alliance”!!)., and certainly not a bulk of their business.

If Apple releases a 3 car lineup, it’s going to take a lot more resources from Hyundai than they’d like, especially if they sell a LOT of them. In fact, the popularity of Apple Car is actually a slight risk for Hyundai. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

  • Do I need to use the same cloth that comes with the Apple Pro Display XDR to wash it?
  • Will car's frame eventually bend over time like an iPhone 6 if the passenger/cargo load is constantly high?
  • Will the proprietary charging cable connector fray after and require annual replacement like the pre-2016 MagSafe Macbooks?
  • Will the door hinges become flimsy like a 2012 Macbook Pro?
  • Will the Touch or FaceID system to unlock doors fail at least 15% of the time especially during the coldest days of the year?
  • Will Apple say "You're driving it wrong!" if any other hardware issues comes up?

  • Haha

You're right, of course. My thinking is that Lucid is the obvious target, with a new U.S. plant and not a single car sale as yet. Buy out the other investors and make Apple cars using some of the cool designs Lucid has shown.

Another fantastic example.

Apple is a design company - that’s their “value added.” I seriously doubt they would be interested in buying Lucid or using Lucid’s designs. I also doubt they’d be interested in using a factory with no history of churning out cars reliably - look at all the trouble Tesla had bringing up it’s Fremont factory.

I had/have 3 pre-2016 MagSafe MacBooks, 7 iPhones and 3 iPads and have never had a single frayed charging cable. I have absolutely no idea what you guys do that they fray.

Hyundai...I mean, it'd be nice if they partnered with a car company that made fun to drive vehicles like Audi or Infiniti.

They are going to end up charging 75k for a friggin Hyundai. No thanks.
...75k for a Genesis-lol

Rumors that Apple is in negotiations with Hyundai about developing an Apple Car have been in the air over the last few weeks, and a new Reuters report today provides further details on the state of play between the two companies.

Apple-and-Hyundai-feature.jpg

According to the report, the outlook for a deal has dimmed because Hyundai executives are divided over the prospect of working with Apple. Hyundai's main concern is that it could become a contract manufacturer for another brand.
According to the report, Apple and Hyundai first started talks over a car partnership in 2018, when Apple's car project was headed by Alexander Hitzinger, who now works for Volkswagen. However, progress in the talks has been hampered by Hyundai's historical reluctance to work with other companies.
Despite its reluctance, Hyundai is said to have excess capacity, therefore contract manufacturing would help it secure production volume.

Apple reportedly wants to source major components of its own design – frames, bodies, drive trains, and other parts – from a variety of places and rely on Hyundai or Kia, a Hyundai Motor Group affiliate, for a final assembly site. Previous reports also suggested that Kia's Georgia plant in the U.S. could become the production base, which would suit Apple better.

Rumors that Apple is in negotiations with Hyundai first surfaced earlier this month‌, suggesting that Apple is planning to work with the automaker to produce electric vehicles and develop batteries due to the high costs of the technology and the necessary production facilities.

Hyundai initially confirmed its electric vehicle discussions with Apple in a statement to CNBC, but the statement was revised hours later with no mention of Apple. Apple has not commented on reports of the negotiations.

Reuters last month reported that ‌‌Apple Car‌‌ production may begin around 2024. However, a report from Bloomberg last week said that the ‌‌Apple Car‌‌ is "nowhere near production stage" and could be ready in around five to seven years.

Apple and Hyundai reportedly want to reach a partnership agreement for the upcoming Apple Car by March, although today's report seems to cast doubt on any deal being signed off anytime soon.

This makes me think about when Motorola and Apple teamed up on the Motorola RCKR— Apple had nearly any control with the RCKR, and with the lessons learned they made iPhone. Before iPhone carriers ‘controlled’ the manufacturers. iPhone turned that around. I wonder if Hyundai is also thinking about being strong armed that way..

I am often critical of Apple (as I am of many others, as a demanding customer) but I do also recognise the good stuff, and am interested in technology as a whole.

If Apple is so bad to you, I am not entirely sure why you are using your precious time coming to this site. Genuinely seems a bit of an odd use. 🤷‍♂️
Because I still have hope that Apple falls apart and talented people with passion to bring creative vision to people will form a new company, that will become much more successful than this horrible transnational evil tech corp. Apple has become to be. Wanna get straight to the point? Name something Apple invented since Cook came to power. That's right, nothing. Oh, wait, their trash-can Mac Pro, that no one remembers today because of what a failure it was. They aren't even good at exploiting poor Steve's ideas, that's how bad Apple has become. And when you become bad, when there is no vision, no goal - only selling more of the same stuff - you only choise is to sell your ass, which mr. Cook became very good at. Praying to see the day this horrible spectacle ends, and people, who are true successors to Jobs vision will get their opportunity at creating new Apple.

Whilst I don't agree with everything you say (e.g. the Apple watch and Airpods, which have evolved that tech area to become everyday items) I do get the feelings that you express. I have had the misfortune of working on B2B dealings with Apple and behind the chummy "customer focussed" exterior they are utterly, utterly ruthless and exploit their dominant position to the very financial max. The business I worked at was barely breaking even on the dealings and Apple were horrible to work with, but we needed to work with them in order to stay relevant in the industry. Customers expected it. Apple behaved like bullies, just in expensive suits. That was many years ago, I can only imagine what it is like now.

Apple is Goliath when it used to like playing the David, the disruptor in the tech world. Those days are long gone now though I am afraid.

I wonder if Apple's end game with Hyundai is just to eventually buy Kia from Hyundai. Then Hyundai can really focus on the higher end Genesis brand.

I doubt it. The car business is a capital intensive business with a lot of fixed costs and physical plant investments, something Apple traditionally does not do. Plus, owning it makes it a lot harder to walk away if the Apple car flops.

True. After all Hyundai has learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent car. PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They’re not going to just walk in.

True, making a car is a lot different than an iPhone/Pad/Mac/etc. Different regulatory requirements worldwide, sales models, life cycles, etc. Design is not universal, with various markets having different tastes. Witness the reaction to BMW's new Billy Big Mouth Bass grills, which will be popular in China and thus the design. Car buying is very much more an emotional purchase, with no vendor lock in, unlike the business Apple is in. Cars are not just a decision between which OS and what type of rectangular box do I want in what color.
