HzO 'Talking to Apple' About Water Blocking Technology for Future iPhones

I have bought 8 iOS devices and not one has ever been in water. Making it waterproof holds little appeal to me.

However, over 1/2 of those devices have been troubled with cracked screens. Fix that real issue first and I'll be extremely pleased.

IF that's the case....it's only a matter of time before on manufacturer includes this feature to get a leg up on another, and soon everyone will have to have it just to stay competitive.

I'm pretty sure Apple and Samsung hate each other enough right now to prevent any joint efforts in maintaining planned obsolescence. One of them will do it to piss the other off, and the other will follow just to stay in the game. Whether or not we see it in the iPhone 5....i doubt it.
 
I don't expect Apple to adopts this, think that one water killed iphone it's a potentially new sell, how many iphones dies due to water everyday in the world?

I bet with you that there is much less devices damaged with water than devices with cracked screens and backs. I'd rather see Gorilla Glass 2 on next iPhone than resisting water...🙂

I do at least twice a day, if not three times a day....*IRONY* 😎
 
I had one of H20 products and it leak twice - they once replace it for free and then 2nd time - it destroy my iPod Nano. I used it when I was kayaking ( not Whitewater )

I now have LifeProof case for my iPhone 4 and I find it much better, I have fun putting it under water, but what is best is that it shock resistance. And you need one those horrible Zagg screen protectors. I can't wait for one for my iPad 2.

must have for wives with butterfingers

my wife has dropped 2 iphones in the toilet so this is definitley a must have. both times were before any other contaminents were disposed in the toilet so this technology would have saved it.

As I said, why would a company want to ALIENATE its customers?

AT&T has alienated customers in the way it / they does / do business. So has / have Verizon / MCI.

This is a hyped selling point for a perceived problem...which isn't as big as people make it out to be.

If Apple is going to spend money on such a feature (which ultimately gets passed on to you), I'd rather they invest in something that most would find really useful.

How many here are willing to admit they dropped their phone in the toilet? 🙄

Hands full, someone I know dropped a phone into the bag of hot take-out food in order to get the car keys to unlock the door. In the few seconds the phone was in the bag with steam, it became unusable. All attempts at drying the phone were unsuccessful. Had its internal components been coated with the water repelling coating, it would not have had to be replaced. But it was ... with an older phone that was kept in a plastic bag for just such an occasion.

Mowing the lawn in the summer, I carry my phone with me - in my pocket. Needless to say, I sweat and the phone gets wet. Resistance to moisture would be a great feature.

I have not cracked a screen since I first owned a cellphone in 1997. However, I do know people who have had the screen crack when it was 1) dropped on concrete and 2) run over by a car.

Fewer than the extra units the first truly waterproof (out of the box) phone would sell.

Plenty of truly waterproof (ootb) phones out there, even in the American market- Motorola Defy, those Casio tough-phones for Verizon...

Certainly would not be the first.

I really just meant iPhone, missed a letter. I shopped that Casio quite a bit when getting my son his first phone.

But to my point, I would submit that very nearly 100% of the Casios sold, and possibly the Defy, are sold because of the ruggedness as the number one reason in the customer's mind.

Not available in the US so it isn't exactly relevant, but there are quite a number of waterproof and dustproof phones sold in Japan that aren't rugged 🙂
 
Dropped my iphone on the bottom of Red Lake

2 weeks ago I dropped my iphone and it's case through an ice hole 14' feet down to the bottom of Upper Red Lake in Minnesota. The phone was on the bottom of the lake for 48 hours. And yes it was 'on' when I dropped it. I was sure it was done for and really had no interest in its recovery. My friend was hellbent on it's recovery and bringing back to life. My phone was in a leather case when it went down. We used an underwater camera to view the phone, and sent a little jigging spoon with a trebble hook down to "catch" my phone. We caught the phone within ten minutes, and yes we set the hook before pulling it up. Once the phone was surfaced we through it in a bag of rice until we got home. My friend brought it home and stuck it in a food dehydrator at 95 degrees for 48 hours. My iphone acts and looks like it was never underwater. I do have one small querk, My phone will no longer shut off. I will tell you the screen is perfect, and the camera is perfect, and everything works perfect. Great job Apple!
