Because they want to make the iphone smaller, thinner, lighter and water resistant. And many other reasons. The iphone is a cellphone and not a laptop computer.
Same reason we dont use VCR's any more, and going away from dvd discs to digital content and cloud storage etc etc....
Get it?

The Samsung S7 is thin, light and waterproof and it has a headphone jack.....

I do the same BECAUSE airline in-flight entertainment knows nothing about lightning connectors or Bluetooth (with the exception of a few airlines offering entertainment to your device through onboard wifi.)
This is where my Bose QC25 becomes handy. I bring and use it to most of my international flights. To block the cabin engine noise and also from some passengers who snores during the long haul flight. With it, I can watch in-flight movies with exceptional sound.
When I want to hear music from my iPhone, I use the Jabra receiver with my QC25.
Most of the time I use my Jabra ROX.

If I want to use my phone as the source of music and connect it it to an amplifier or stereo, I use my 3yr old Jabra BT receiver. If I can afford the SIM Free iPhone 7+, definitely I can afford the $20 receiver.
That also replaced my cassette adapter.

I don't follow. I'm stating my post from a standpoint of convenience. That's nice that you can afford an expensive phone and a $20 receiver. I'm saying that even if I have the necessary adapters, there is a chance that I will either forget, or be in a location where I don't have it. It's limiting in a time when BT ear/headphones aren't in the mature state yet.

I'm sorry if you find my comment not helpful at all.
I know it's difficult for most to loose the headphone jack.
What I'm trying to say earlier is just a suggestion for those who bought the new iPhone 7.
Again, I'm sorry for my unsolicited advice.

I got my lightning port EarPods cable tangled 4 times today with the obligatory rip out of the ears followed by a profanity or two. Left the bt EarPods at home. I hate that f@&$ing cable.
I mean, whether it's lightning or 3.5 mm, that happens... that isn't on Apple for changing ports (though I feel for you - the worst is in the gym or on an airplane).

My post was about how I didn't like the removal of the headphone jack and how it was inconvenient.

Your post was about how if you wanted to use your phone as a media player, you would use a receiver, which you can buy because it's just $20 compared to your expensive phone.

No need to apologize, I just don't know how your comment makes sense to me or to other people who are dealing with the same problem.

You were at a party that everyone had to listen to music only via a headphone jack?
Give me a break....
Lets continue to whine and keep beating a dead horse.

Did you miss the part where he said the guy was using an "amp with a small jack"? How is that whining or dead horse related?

I guess you are saying Apple people should only attend parties where the hosts only use only state of the art equipment?

Buy an aux to bluetooth adapter and you don't have to deal with plugging your phone in when you get in the car.

I could do, but that is extra expense when I can just as easily plug my phone in to the little lead that is sitting in the centre console of the car. It doesn't fail to connect and is quick. My phone still has the head phone jack so it's an unnecessary accessory at present. Maybe in future when I upgrade and there is no choice I will invest.

I do not believe it but whatever you say.
Just another user that cant get over the fact that technology evolves.
You'll get it over it eventually :D
As I said previously if you don't believe I encountered that situation, that is your problem not mine. It's hardly inconceivable as a concept.

For clarity this is the type of hifi with amp that was at the party you don't believe existed:
5c46baffe457efdc78c210b294292cec.jpg

Not my picture btw, but an example of a 17 year old sound system. They do exist although many here are too young to remember.

I can't accept technology evolves? Strange considering my profession deals with designing for the future. That isn't the reason though and I'm sure you know that. My 6S can use lightning headphones and Bluetooth headphones if I so wish so I fail to see how the iPhone 7 is an evolution seeing as it lacks an extra feature? You seem more annoyed about this than me though? Of course i'll accept it. If I continue to buy iPhones that no longer have a headphone jack i'll have no choice. It's only a minor annoyance for me.

I still chuckle that I've been labelled as an iPhone fanboy on here for years and yet the first time I share an opinion that isn't pro Apple, I'm ridiculed.

THAT'S WHAT YOU GET. And those Airpods still are unavailable. I told you until the iPhone 8. Hahahaaaaa
Why would I wait for the 8? I was paying $40 a month for a phone regardless might as well be a 7 plus.

Yeah, the 'legacy' port is in daily use for most folk...

Same for the Xperia XZ, and that has no protruding camera bump either...

I find his claim bizarre and I dont buy it.
He had people go in and plug in to a headphone jack to listen to music and iphone 7 guys couldn't do it. Please.
The whining and beating a dead horse is the constant headphone jack threads that pop up every few days. Its funny posting a picture of 1980's stereo tech and expect the newest smartphone to be backwards compatible with that dinosaur:D Maybe the iphone 7 should play records too:D
Its final and not going to change, you either adapt or purchase something else. Its very simple...

I have a bose system that is four years old that I use when I host parties and we all connect our phones via the 3.5mm jack. I don't see why that is so out of the realm of possibility. Some people don't want to replace their technology every time Apple decides to switch up their system.

Most people nowadays use Bluetooth wireless speakers to play from their tablets or phones. They dont have to plug in at all or leave their device sitting next to the speaker.
If you have an older stereo system you usually have music for it or plug in one device and play. You dont ask every guest to plug in their own phone and take turns playing music. That can all be accomplished from one device without plugging in and out for every song.
And in the end who really cares? I didn't buy my iPhone 7 to play music at a random party via AUX cable or if I cant do it I wont feel left out or out of the club:D
Big deal, get me a violin :D

Who really cares indeed. I guess that is best asked to the person who is being obnoxious to someone because they don't do things the way he / she does.

You have no idea what "most people" do. My friends and I have a lot of different tastes in music. Sure you start off with one phone but inevitably other people want to plug in and play different stuff and it goes back and forth.

But you are right, the real point is why do you care so much?

Trust me, it doesn't bother me at all.
Just having a conversation and posting my point of view if that's ok with you.

Its my current phone. But your explanation about why Apple ditched the headphone jack was rubbish as i pointed out.

It is what it is.
My explanation doesnt make any difference. Its already decided and done like it or not.
Since you're using a Samsung and you're happy with it then why are you viewing and posting at an iPhone forum section to begin with? :)

Most people still use setups that you can plug your phone into... Just yesterday for a thanksgiving party my friend had a setup in which you could plug your phone into via headphone jack.

You seem to be attacking other people and inserting this strange generalization that people would ditch their expensive speaker setup at home...

No attack sir, there are options for those that still need the jack in rare situations.
The standard headphone jack is gone for good from this iphone and all newer iphones that will be released in the future.
The faster one realizes it and moves on the happier they will be :)
There's no turning back.

Can anyone comment on the quality of the "Lightning => 3.5mm jack" adapter? Is the sound just as good as a dedicated headphone jack? Especially on bigger headphones?

It sounds the same as the old iPhones. No better or worse (it uses the same DAC chip), which is to say it's adequate for easy-to-drive, low impedance headphones (32 Ohm or less) but not less efficient ones.

Even an inexpensive dedicated DAC with its own power source (battery) will do much better.

Also, I miss the headphone jack far less than I thought I would. The adapter is cheap and easy to leave attacked to my headphones or carry in my man-bag (or both). So I use that happily whenever I don't want to use my more powerful portable DAC. Battery life on 7 means I usually get a full day so I'm not running flat anywhere near as much as I used to with my 5s.

I wish they made a black version of the adapter so it blends more seamlessly with my phone and headphones but other than that it hasn't bothered me at all.
