Can anyone comment on the quality of the "Lightning => 3.5mm jack" adapter? Is the sound just as good as a dedicated headphone jack? Especially on bigger headphones?
I did just that! I used my Sony V6 Studio monitors to compare the sound quality and the difference in volume (if any) by doing A/B tests using various source materials.

In conclusion, I could not hear any difference between the 3.5mm jack and the adapter.

That's a relief! Looking forward to receiving mine soon.

Yeah, The Bluetooth earphones are not one of the things that you can use anytime you want. I hate when I'm going in rhythm and the earphone battery gets drained... They are really problematic...

If you have a pair of Beats Studio 3 with the energy efficient W-1 chip that last 40 hours on a single charge, you'll likely find your phone runs out of power before your headphones do.

While there may not be a large selection now, that will change over the next year, and Apple is setting the bar which others will follow, and customers will demand.

I have no trouble charging my headphones overnight in order to get rid of cumbersome, constraining cables and wires.

I'm particularly liking the Apple Bandwagon (tm) calling this an Ancient Plug. This makes it sound like apple finally has allowed us to move on now that we've built the Pyramids in Egypt and no longer need this.

And excellent point about a lateral step instead of a step forward.

Cut the cord? Wireless freedom? Hang on a minute

- with a Bluetooth headphone you are required to carry not only a SECOND charge cable along with you WHICH IS THICKER THAN A 3.5MM CABLE but a second charger itself! Unless you're OK with them dying on you while you're out! And in the meantime you need access to two power plugs as well! You're that guy at work with tons of dongles and batteries! How is this simplifying your life vs a thin cable that provides better sound quality and powers your cans with the phones battery?
-listening to Bluetooth headphones uses more power from your phone than listening to the 3.5mm jack! AND, Your new iPhone 7 STILL DOESN'T SUPPORT FAST CHARGING! So not only do you need to constantly worry about the charge of your Bluetooth headphones but your device needs to spend more time on the charger as well for the same amount of music listening you did before (assuming your bt headphones can last that long anyway)
-lasty and this is the real kicker, you can't charge the phone and use headphones even with that rotten adapter at the same time and even if you buy a 40$ dongle and throw it in your new "apple dongles fanny pack" because from what I read the line in microphone doesn't work with those lightning charger / earphone / lightning splitters. What about consultants that use their iPhones to tether and VPN remotely while on conference calls? I was one of them for many years and our company issued iPhones. All of us would sit there with the iphone plugged into our Lenovo laptop and the headsets on for conference calls while tethering over 3g. Now if I have a conference call and my iPhone battery is low because I've been on the headset and not charging, what the f do I do? Charge the phone, but now I can't use the headset.i have 20% battery on my Bluetooth headset now thank god I hope it lasts the next two hours.

Courage indeed. I invite the apologists in this thread to explain to me how the above is progress. The only thing apple will force people to do is jump to android 7.0.

Completely agree with all the points mentioned above. This is one of the reasons I chose to stick with my iPhone 6. iPhone 7 wasn't just good enough for me to spend that much money again this year.

The digital audio output on the lightning was always there. You can plug a lightning headset into a 6 or 6S. Its not like they added anything new. All they have done is to force you to have an external DAC to listen to music. Not even sure about the quality of the DAC they have bundled into the Dongle plug. So they have added nothing that will enable new devices to take advantage of anything all they did was to remove something that many people use. Even my selfie stick makes use of the headphone plug.

But to change the standards, somebody has to take the first move. Don't think for a moment that Apple did not know the risk of consumer alienation. The innovation will come in the future makers are now compelled to deal with either a wireless or a fully digital connection.

The exploding phones trend made me aware of not charging any device overnight. Even if they are my headphones, I feel afraid that they might explode beside my bed leaving burns on my face lol. As far as the phone is concerned, none of the smartphones has that powerful battery that can survive for hours if you have a frequent use of the phone. Frankly speaking, I usually have to charge, my phone twice or even thrice a day in order to keep it alive every time :p

I lost my damn dongle.

Just got back from the Apple Store with that stupid Belkin adapter to charge and play music, went to try it out and it's gone. FFS.

Right now, I'm missing the headphone jack.

Everybody in this thread, I tried to tell you!! This is exactly what I told you, YOU WOULD DO. Now, I'm going to dab. I'll do some dab.

I remember when a parody was made regarding the Apple 7/7+. Funny somehow watching that video. It was quite disappointing for my part that everything would be almost the same as the previous model like etc etc etc. That even the 3.5 will be removed.
Still, the sales for the new iPhone sky rocketed. And I still see people ordering the phone despite of the long waiting period.
So many will definitely miss a lot of things.

Please explain why my experience is 'out there'? If I was lying I would have dropped this by now but I really am curious why you and others think this is so absurd?

If I change the scenario to my car which does not have Bluetooth and my friend gets in with his iPhone 7, is it still out there? Please see pic below:

Would you believe me if I said he couldn't plug it in here but I could? Or is that extremely far fetched?! I'd love input here

(Written honestly by a liar)

nothing is wrong with your story. My family did that same thing at my college graduation party. One person had a playlist on their phone, plugged an AUX into their phone, then connected it to a speaker. If someone else had songs on their phone that we wanted to hear, they would do the same. It's simple, easy, no fuss. I have yet to go to a party where someone brings out a Bluetooth speaker, not saying it hasn't happened, just the people I'm around don't see the point of buying one if they already have speaker that sounds great.

Just went to a retirement party, the DJ didn't have a particular song we wanted to hear. That was ok, someone just plugged their phone using the AUX, then connected to his speakers.

I say all of that and I'm all for wireless everything. I use Bluetooth everyday, but I understand why it is problematic for others.

It reminded me how short sighted it is removing this standard expected feature.

I know right? I feel the exact same way about not having a floppy drive every...damn...day.

Because they want to make the iphone smaller, thinner, lighter and water resistant. And many other reasons. The iphone is a cellphone and not a laptop computer.
Same reason we dont use VCR's any more, and going away from dvd discs to digital content and cloud storage etc etc....
Get it?

Didn't you and I already have the talk about making sense? Do we need to have it again? :D

3) Tried to watch a video on an iPhone with my earphones (via adapter, bluetooth earphones ran out of battery and were charging), but the phone was running out of battery too. Couldn't watch without earphones, so I couldn't watch the video while it was charging.
They have dongles that lets you charge and use the auxiliary port simultaneously. https://www.amazon.com/TOPGO-Lightning-Adapter-Earphones-Function/dp/B01N0DJ8BX/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1480621170&sr=8-6&keywords=lightning+to+3.5+to+lightning&refinements=p_72:2661618011

It's annoying and unnecessary, but the option is still there if you want it.

All of that is fine. But put it into context. The iPhone 7 is a direct descendant of the iPod which had its own closed ecosystem. There were all kinds of iPod docks, and if you had an iPod at a party that only had such a dock, you were all set to join the party and plug your iPod into the dock and share your music, and the iPhone benefitted from that legacy. However, if you didn't have a 30-pin dock connector on your device, then you had better have had a 3.5mm male-to-male patch cord to plug into the device's AUX port, because you couldn't rely on the person with the dock to have one -- why would they?

This is exactly the same situation. For a customer who is part of the Apple ecosystem, and to the extent a person wants to participate in a non-Apple device oriented party, they had better be prepared. This has always been the case.

As for any professional DJ being paid money to perform a service, they had better be equipped to address the needs of any customer. The iPhone 7 is no longer a "what-if" -- it's reality. If the DJ isn't using an iPhone 7 themselves, then they had better invest in a $9 dongle to carry around in their kit for just such emergencies at a wedding.

And this has been my experience as an Apple user. Any "professional" situation I have ever been in has been in a position to accommodate my Apple device, be it 30-Pin dock connector, Lightning cable, 3.5mm headphone jack adapter for the original iPhone, Thunderbolt cables, Firewire 400/800 cables, DVI, mini DVI, etc. Considering there might be over 200 million iPhone 7s in the world by the end of 2017, and while 3.5mm Lightning headphone adapters might not be easy to find now in the wild, they almost certainly will be everywhere by then. And this is a typical Apple phenomenon as well. I wouldn't be surprised to find the $9 adapters for sale on some airlines in a year just in case.

Is this the most practical way to approach consumer audio? Maybe not, but the reality is, it won't create an undue hardship for most users who adopt a headphone jackless device, regardless if it's Apple or Android.
