I don't miss the clunky last century technology plug at all, and other than the lightning plug on the EarPods I don't see any difference in them either.

To those who wish that :apple: would bring back the plug - it'll happen immediately after they restore the optical disk drives to the MacBooks. That was also unpopular with a small number of people and you will not see it return either. Instead we now have "the cloud" and have no real use for the disk drives. After the iPhone 8 comes out no one will even remember that plug. In a very few years people visiting a tech museum will be astonished that people ever carried phones that had such old fashioned technology in it.

I don't think the jack plug is anywhere near being a museum piece just yet. Maybe in 20 years, but it's still an industry standard on core devices. The iPhone is mainstream in brand but still a minority device in the grand scheme so we'll have to wait and see if your prediction that in approximately 10 months time nobody remembers standard headphones. One to bookmark i say :)

What? You're kidding? The Belkin splitter doesn't support mic input from the Lightning EarPods? And it doesn't do data transfer either!? So literally all it does is support sound output via Lightning and power/charging? For $40!?

And I thought I was dissapointment when I discovered it didn't support two Lightning headphones at once. They still haven't introduced anything that does that. Sometimes I drive my young nephews on trips, and let them use my iPhone to plug in a headphone splitter and watch a movie or play a game. There's no way to easily do that on the iPhone 7 natively. I'd need to keep the 3.5mm adapter and two sets of 3.5mm EarPods in the car, and the 3.5mm splitter, as well as carry my Lightning EarPods, or use the adapter myself. And then I still need the Belkin adapter if I want to charge it at the same time. Or I could buy some custom BT headphones without the W1 chip, that allow pairing to each other. But that's a pretty expensive solution. Plus I'd need to still carry around my AirPods (if they ever make it to market).

All things considered, the removal of the headphone jack has been a train wreck.
BT headphones are not expensive. I found a nice pair on Amazon for $20. They will not win any audio competition but they play music just fine. If this is your definition of a train wreck I will be happy to be on that train.

Edited for grammar.

Enjoy listening to the crap sound quality that a non 3.5mm jack headphone has, ill stick to decent headphones that only come with a 3.5mm jack thanks.

You're right, they aren't that expensive. I bought a pair of Soul Republic Shadow's for $100AUD and they work and sound just fine. Albeit, a little heavy on the bass.

It's just that its another thing to worry about running out of battery, where it's just so easy to plug in a pair of wired headphones and away you go. I actually find the Apple lightning earbuds to be great sounding and prefer them out of all the headphones I own out of my Shadows, Sennheiser Urban XL's and Beats Studio's.

Reading through this thread has just solidified in me the idea that there are core differences between users. Those who don't care about thenjack are slamming those that do. Classy. Those who wish they had the jack are coming up with the craziest stories I've ever heard (a party where people were swapping phones in to play music?!).

My wife is mostly frustrated about the lag and crashing she's experienced. Haven't had the time to visit Apple yet, but that doesn't seem to be a common issue here.

I didn't upgrade this year but it's not because of the jack. Just didn't see a reason and frankly I'm not missing a thing. I do hope that the next iPhone is much of what people are hyping it to be. My gripe with losing the jack is with losing a standard. Not jazzed about Bluetooth and less jazzed about a proprietary lightning headphone set.

I have a pair of $20 BT earbuds. They sound fine. But I can't pair two of them to the same device and share the signal. Can yours do that? If so, please point me to the source from which you purchased yours as it solves my problem.

Because they want to make the iphone smaller, thinner, lighter and water resistant. And many other reasons. The iphone is a cellphone and not a laptop computer.
Same reason we dont use VCR's any more, and going away from dvd discs to digital content and cloud storage etc etc....
Get it?
thats because dvd discs and digital content and cloud storage are inherent better than VCR in every criteria.
Bluetooth isnt better than wired yet.

I tried a few BT wireless headsets and they seemed fine to me and not much difference than listening through the wire.
Maybe the time has come for Bluetooth to evolve further or maybe another wireless standard to emerge to replace the ancient plug;)

You're correct. Bluetooth Audio quality has come a long way and is fairly good, but there still is a difference in quality. And this is coming from someone who owns and tested wired/Bluetooth headphones, wired/Bluetooth surround sound and wired/Bluetooth car audio. I think Bluetooth 5 will bring some positive changes when it arrives and we are not far off from this. Wired quality just provides a more clear signal with less interference from a wireless signal. But again, Bluetooth quality has expanded and it's improving every year. At least in terms of where it was five years ago.

I'm starting to regret ever sharing that experience as I am truly astonished it's been greeted with such scepticism. Christ on a bike it's not like I said I stepped up into the DJ booth in Pacha Ibiza and Tiesto didn't have a Bluetooth dongle so our phones wouldn't work?! That would be crazy and far fetched!

No, I was round a mates with my wife and a few of our friends. I suggested listening to music to which the host is not exactly up on anything like that. He had an old hifi, I searched through the drawers underneath and found a double ended jack plug. I plugged my iPhone in, switched it to AUX like I do in my car and put on some music and asked if anybody else had something they'd like to listen to? My mate Lee joked that the ancient sound system wouldn't even play from his iPhone 7 as we couldn't plug it in. We laughed, it didn't ruin the night, he wasn't at all offended being a normal bloke that he is.

I relay this event on Mac Rumors and a load of geeks can't fathom that a scenario like that could ever happen. 'Crazy Story', 'I don't believe your claim' followed. Well this is a stark lesson on the internet for me I think lol.

Next time i'll have to share the unbelievable story of how I have to turn the volume right up on my phone when I connect it to my car, you won't believe it but the sound is quiet until you do. Maybe i'll do that in an appropriate thread though. Happy Easter everybody.

Really strange that they're latching onto that story, lol. I've had several occurrences in which this happened to me.

I tried to be careful in my wording. I purposely didn't say I didn't believe you. But the story, in my opinion, is pretty out there. At the very least the person throwing the party may consider keeping anandapter handy (I keep various chargers in my car as I have friends who we often carpool with places who use different devices). Ive never been to anlartycwherendecices were swapped to play music, but I have kids now and so I'm out of the party scene. I guess I just imagined thstcwith internet access we've kind of transcended the need to change media since we can basically just play whatever wherever.

Regardless, I still don't understand why people are slamming each other, and that was my bigger point. All of the sudden Apple drops the headphone jack and people either find the phone unusable or they're screaming at people "living in the past".

If something as little as this is able to divide a fan group it's no wonder the good old USA is so damn divided over an election.

Anyway, happy holidays. I meant no offense and hope my statements weren't taken that way.

I doubt it, eventually they will all remove the headphone jack from smartphones.
Technology does evolve, if it was leaving out parts then we would still have Floppy drives and zip drives, and macbooks with dvd drives, VCR tapes would still be around and blockbuster would still be in business and continue to do great etc... :D
Its not the end of the world like some like to act over removing the aux headphone jack from a smartphone.
It will be ok ;)

The 3.5mm headphone jack is essentially a 19th Century bit of kit - it is a miniaturized version of the classic quarter-inch jack (6.35mm), which is said to date back as far as 1878.
Time for technology to advance I think....

As for eventual removal I suspect you are right. As for this being the time for it? It's a bit early in the game IMO. If Apple had popped up and rolled out a "we've done this - try it in place of the jack!" or "this have been greatly improved and you .." I could see it. Instead they roll out a dongle. Wow.

It isn't end of the world true. It's condescending.

Please explain why my experience is 'out there'? If I was lying I would have dropped this by now but I really am curious why you and others think this is so absurd?

If I change the scenario to my car which does not have Bluetooth and my friend gets in with his iPhone 7, is it still out there? Please see pic below:
b972e27c4764827daa72f43575d5a693.jpg

Would you believe me if I said he couldn't plug it in here but I could? Or is that extremely far fetched?! I'd love input here

You have to understand that with each new iPhone release people get excited, get protective of Apple, lose their minds if there is criticism, and reject the idea that Apple is just another company.

I stood in line for the first two iPhones. They were original, innovative, and unlike any other phone. The Apple Store thing was fairly new. Standing in line I ran into friends, and enjoyed the overall experience. With time I started to get tired of waiting in line so I waited for a few months until the hoopla wore down, and then I'd just walk in and pick one up. Nowadays, I seem to skip ever other release. I seem to be skipping each new "S" version. In my opinion the Apple phone has run it's course for the most part. Now it's just tweaking. Granted each new version offers something new, is faster, thinner and a different color. Now we throw in a new way of connecting headphones. Some people love the idea of a new concept, some are resistant. This thread will go on forever.

I am getting used to the idea that people are irrational in my eyes, perfectly sane in their view, and will get excited with every new Apple product. For example I had to laugh at some of the comments when Apple came out with the iPhone SE. It looks just like the iPhone 5. Yet people were all excited claiming they were so happy Apple came out with a new smaller phone. "It's so much easier to hold and use one handed". All this after everyone in essence had been using the same phone. They were then calling for a larger easier to read phone like their competitors. You will prematurely age if you try to figure all this out and rationalize it. I love Apple products. Not all of them but many of them. If there is a better version of something offered by a competitor I will buy it. Since adopting this attitude I have bought a new, better, non-Apple router. Just picked up a Roku Ultra to replace my Apple TV3.

If Apple comes out with a better product I will buy it. But for me I have 6 six pairs of traditional headphones, some are HiFi quality. I may pick up a new iPhone at some point, but not until we see how this plays out. As far as I know Apple is the first to delete the headphone jack. We shall see if this becomes the standard. Then I will decide. Besides I am allergic to dongles.

I'm a tech geek and I believe your story. I don't have a reason not too. It's not like someone can disapprove of what happened. And it's Macrumors, which I need not say more.

The real deal, I think the main reason people are calling you out is because major e-cool points are to be had if someone can "bust" anyone online and prove their stories false. 12 virgins shall bestowed upon anyone who e-busts anyone and they shall enjoy the spoils of their crusade for many days! They will be e-famous and get their 15 nanoseconds of fame and to some this is the only fame they will ever have.

The options are aplenty and there is a phone to satisfy all our needs.

Don't pay any attention to the doubters. I seen many a house party using Phones to play music. Generally three or four people who might have good music. I've been there and done it myself.

I am a big Apple Fan and own many of their products. I am not excited about some of their recent decisions and will vote with my wallet and see what happens longer term. I will keep my 2015 MacBook Air instead of considering the latest mac's and I got a good deal on a 6S six weeks ago to replace my iPhone six specifically because of the headphone jack.
I might be among a very small sample of users but I think I can sit on the fence for a couple of years.

I don't think you're in a 'very' small sample. I did the same thing when I realised the cost of my contract was being hiked by £200 and the new phone had one less feature that I use on a daily basis. I too voted with my wallet and quite a few people I know opted for a 6S due to price this time around. I didn't see the point paying more for a device that I knew I wouldn't get anymore out of. I didn't appreciate the notion that Apple are apparently releasing the new design next year instead of this. For those of us who have invested in first gen releases it seemed like an eff you from them and told to wait another year. Well I bought a cheaper 1 year old design and it's been a pleasure to use. And it plugs into my car without a secondary adapter that I would need to keep remembering to carry with my phone lol. Cheers Apple ;)

Yeah I think they went too far and this is a disgrace. The usual apologists are justifying it all in full force but it serious audio gear is NOT Bluetooth, or at least it will have a wire backup for the Bluetooth connection. I've got 3 pairs of earphones worth over 600$ each and Listening to my music from a phone with 128gb of space or more is... The main reason I buy the device in the first place.. And having access to that music in the broadest convenience is one of the top criteria for choosing a device.

No headphone jack on my 128gb device are you mad? I was waiting to buy an iPhone and grabbed a 128gb 6s Plus used for 400£, got 90gb of music on it and full flexibility to use any of my gear while it's charged up or charging at the same time.

What irks me the most is now this is being shoved down everyone's throat. Bluetooth is NOT as good as wired. I don't see this as an evolution, so much as a choice- ultimately Smug iPhone 7 Bluetooth guy isn't any more advanced technology wise than anyone else he just has LESS CHOICE how to use his device.

That's what apple has done. I see everyone on the tube dealing with an adapter for their wired earphones on the tube. I don't think that's right and I won't support apple with my wallet. This iphone 6s plus is going to get run into the ground.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Honestly, your story is exactly what I expected to happen when Apple unilaterally declared the 3.5mm jack obsolete, so it's bizarre to me that no one believes that it actually happened.

Millions of people own iPhones, I'm sure at least some of them used the jack pretty often. Some people simply can't see beyond their own specific user experience so they say other peoples' are far fetched or unbelievable.

In any event, we'll all adjust to not having the port will be a non-issue one day (or year). Then we'll all find something else to polarize over. :p
