I'd also mention it would suck for hte original owner of the phone to get slammed w/ two data plans (anyone know if this is possible?!) just from us giving you bad, or in this case, good advice.

Good luck.

Good point! I was wondering about this and I think this is true.

@Consultant- pls stop trolling if u can't follow our conversation. I specifically said"I picked up an un-activated sim card, called att to activate it and used it as a prepaid sim". What part don't u get about that? Duhhhhhh...

Jeez.

You need a working, activated AT&T sim or old-activated sim.

An unactivated sim won't do it. Duh!

Correct. An unactivated sim will only work for previously activated iPhones.
If the phone has never been activated before, it will need a sim with an active, AT&T service.

An iPhone can't be newly activated on prepaid (GoPhone) which is why it didn't work for you, and why you need to find someone with an iPhone 4 on AT&T to activate your phone.
Telling people who help you that they are trolls is not going to get you any help on here. Consultant was pointing out an idea that you seemed to have missed.

Right, but jailbreaks like Spirit require an activated phone, so it is useful to have an old sim around to do this.

That's right - For that reason I brought two ATT sims with me when I moved to China (along with my collection of other nationality pay as you go sims)

Good to clear that up - thanks for the comment.

Also, the ability to 'hacktivate' phones is up in the air w/ the new release - I think it's only been mentioned twice via tweet w/ the dev team casting doubt on whether it will be included or not.

Ok I apologize.. I'm just frustrated with this activation issue that I have. Yes I did missed it and it is "My BAD" real bad like Michael Jackson.. Thanks you guys..

hey, slow on the trigger there. :)

I doubt it.. Judging by their comments on tweeter, it seems like the phone needs to be activated in order to use the upcoming JB. (This is just my own opinion)

People might be more willing to help you if you didn't blame other people (and a person like sherif_hashim who's done great services for the iPhone community, to boot!) for your inability to understand a simple procedure. There are two kinds of SIMS which will activate a locked iPhone: an active or formerly-active official-carrier SIM, or, as sherif_hashim pointed out, a phonebook SIM. Get one, put it in your phone, and that will work. Your inability to find one and your decision to purchase other random SIMs in an attempt to activate your phone does not mean that you have been suckered into anything.

Besides that, sherif_hashim does specifically mention DITS in one of his recent tweets about using these cards

sherif_hashim

I meant this video to be a reference for ppl stuck at activation, but I am using these cards for nearly a month now, Dits was the last :)

So when I came home today I figured I'll do something different. Since I'm waiting for my DITS phonecard in the mail to be able to activate my iPhone 4. I figured I could try putting my phone on DFU mode and restoring my phone with the same firmware which is 4.0. I get this error message....

(I did the umbrella thing and saved my SHSH file last week). Heres a screen shot:

So what am I doing wrong???

so you are on 4.0.1?

Wait what do you mean? I have to turn on the TSS server while restoring it with iTunes?

@Arisian- The phone's firmware is 4.0 and I'm restoring to the same firmware which 4.0.

can we ask why you are going from 4.0 to 4.0 - just to wipe it. Im quite positive this is NOT going to solve your problem.

Nonetheless, you will need to turn your TSS server on w/ tinyumbrella.

@TheLatinist - I guess since saurik isn't sure about his SHSH server for 4.0, the only option is local hosting - correct?

Yes I know its a long shot to solving my problem but I figure Id give it a try and there was nothing to lose since I saved my SHSH file anyway and I'm still waiting for my DTS phonecard. Meantime, I tried to restore again and its in idle right now that says "Verifying iPhone restore with Apple". (And yes my TSS server is running)

I have no evidence that this will work, but you can wipe everything on the phone w/o doing a restore. Try that first.

After that, here are directions on how to downgrade from 4.0 to 3.1.x using tinyUmbrella. The process will be the same, but I'm not really sure aboute the error you are getting.

give it a try at least: http://mygadgetnews.com/2010/07/07/how-to-downgrade-ios-4-to-os-3-1-x-using-tinyumbrella/

Thats weird.
So even with your 4.0 SHSH's it wont let you restore to 4.0?
WTF?
Whats the point of saving them then?

I guess we will find out.

This is also not confirmed that 4.0 SHSH wont let you restore to 4.0.

HONESTLY - this is NOT the issue at hand and will 99% not fix the issue the OP is having - It is however interesting :)

I'd try to wipe the phone from the phone first and then try to activate it on another computer.

I'd really just give that advice to just wait for your DITs card or for the jailbreak to come out rather than beating your head on wall after wall.

Good luck though.

Yep, I know this has nothing to do with his issue activating it but I wonder if the SHSH's I saved for 2 iphone 4's are pretty much a waste of time or there's some step that the OP is missing.

Another thing that works:

Get an old GoPhone IMEI# and a new sim. Go to the GoPhone website and go through the process of activating a new GoPhone account. It takes just a minute. Once you submit the info, the sim is automatically activated just before it takes you to the screen to make a payment. Skip this and you now have an activated sim good for 30 days.

Wait a minute... Its finally restoring my phone to 4.0!!! (I think server had a timed out when I first got the error).

Now Im just sitting here waiting and see if this will bypass my first problem which is the activation part.
