I'm not sure how much of a improvement Apple Pay really played here.

My BF had the Speck case where you can store up to 3 cards on his 4S. He carries his License, one credit card and one amex for fuel at Costco. His credit card is also has a NFC symbol so he can just tap it with his phone as well, similar to Apple Pay. So technically, he's been wallet free since the 4S came out.

Big difference is the extra security that Apple Pay offers (tokenization) vs. simply tapping with a credit card.

I thought Europe is way ahead of us in terms of technology, especially contactless pay (which is why Apple Pay would see wider adoption over there than here, at least for the time being). So over there, they're ahead of us in terms of technology but we have more places that accept CC here? Is that an accurate statement?

Well, it depends. Here in the UK pretty much all restaurants and shops will take credit/debit cards. Many cards now have NFC and a lot of the payment terminals are NFC-enabled already so are set up for Apple Pay (when / if the UK banks get on board). There are, however, plenty of situations where cash is still easier or needed e.g. small purchases (many shops have a £5 minimum spend for cards), vending machines (rail ticket machines etc. take cards but I've yet to see a drink/snack vending machine that does), municipal car parking and street vendors (despite the post above it's really rare to find one with a card terminal where I am - maybe more prevalent in big cities?).

A restaurant is probably a terrible example. But I have been to conventions where "mom and pop" vendors simply don't take cash because it is too logistically painful and annoying to come with enough change for the day's projected sales. Some of the larger vendors come with cash tills, but even they are quickly resorting to credit/debit only.

I am a big saltwater fish buff (hence the screen name) and most of those conventions are "plastic only". Square was like a godsend when it launched.

Actually mom and pops stores prefer cash as it does not involve paying fees and customers don't have to spend a minimum amount.

You are carrying a $600 to over $800 phone!. If you are robbed then there goes everything. Neither is safer but I prefer to still carry cash to the little daily things!

That humongous phone is convenient to carry. Cash is too heavy, bulk, useful. :)

I use my DL for identification when I return something to Best Buy, never really needed it any store or for any transactions per sue.

Apple retail requires a state issued photo ID for all transactions.

I'd like to go wallet free but whenever I do so i'm left with the feeling like I'm missing something. I can get over that feeling in time but there are different situational things I haven't been able to master. For instance, if I leave the grocery store discount card in the glove box it's almost guaranteed I'll forget it and then realize I did at the register. When it's in a wallet and with me then no worries.

I'm also concerned that ApplePay isn't nearly as prevalent as it really needs to be to leave my credit cards at home. I don't know about adding Loop Pay because that's just another thing I'd have to carry around.

That's not to say I'm not going to keep trying. I just haven't mastered how to go wallet free just yet.

I've been on the search for a perfect 6 Plus case to keep my ID and one credit card but I've not found anything I like yet.

Apple pay + ID + one credit card = Goodbye wallet

Now if only I had one of those cars that don't need keys and you can use an app to open/start etc.

....you guys need to get yourself one of these:

Bullet Train Safe Case

Its the answer to all your problems (and NO I don't work for Bullet Train - just an enthusiastic backer!)

I'm not sure I could go completely wallet free. I feel weird without it, sort of like not having my house keys. I also don't trust just having my ID in my pocket as I'm probably more prone to lose it that way.

Apple retail requires a state issued photo ID for all transactions.

That may be true for iPhone purchases but most certainly not all transactions.

I've never heard of loop pay nor have i ever seen any place i've ever shopped at advertise accepting this "Loop Pay".

It's supposed to work like a regular swipe card, just like Coin card, Plastc, etc. You won't see them advertised.

Looks cool but has more storage than I need and looks pretty thick. I only need something for my DL and one credit card. I do like that the cards are hidden.

What I hate about all the (or most) wallet cases is that your cards stick out and look hideous.

I've never purchased iPhone.

All transaction at Apple brick and mortar have required me to present my DL. I am a long time customer. Many Apple store employees know me, greet me by name and apologize when asking for the ID.

Apple policy.

I am an Apple customer. First purchase at Apple brick and mortal was Jan 2003. Each and every transaction required my DL.

I was there. I know what transpired. Transaction are with an AMEX that is linked to iTunes and apple.com/store.

In person they insist on the DL. Apple is the only retailer requiring a state issued photo ID when I present a credit card with my signature on the back.

Call Cook is this bothers you.

That's anecdote, not a source. Many retailers are in the habit of asking for ID when paying with a credit card. If it were Apple policy, it'd be written down somewhere or stated on the Apple website or some other official channel and that'd be a source.

Anecdote my foot. I am referring specifically and exclusively to Apple brick and mortar store. You know, the folks who are crowing about Apple Pay.

No other retailer has ever required a state issued photo ID when presented with a credit card with signature on the back.

I'm just saying if you pay on your phone you don't need to provide an ID.

I don't use iPhone. I doubt I ever will. I have made many purchases at Apple retail. Each time a DL was required. Even ship to store purchases made at apple.com.

You must not go out much. People get asked for ID all the time when paying with a credit card at many retailers, even though this practice is against CC issuers' agreement.

But it's obviously NOT required on ALL retail purchases as you claim since you can now pay on your iphone while in store and never having to talk to or deal with an Apple employee. You pick up an item in store, open the apple store app. Scan the item, hit pay on your app and walk out of the store. No ID required.

That's all I'm trying to say but you are ignoring what I'm saying.
