I just did honey

So what you are telling me is:

1.) YOU downloaded iTunes 9
2.) YOU used your own iPhone 2G on your existing line (with a new full-sized SIM, obviously)
3.) YOU activated through iTunes 9 and obtained the unlimited data plan, without a hitch.

I'm not saying you're wrong/not being honest, I'm just trying to confirm that YOU did this (not read, heard, ect.) within the recent weeks and had success.

I guess it depends on how much you need to use data. If you really need it, then it's better to get a usage alert so you can tweak your plan and keep moving along.

And here's the thing, I need the money more than I need the data. So I'd rather them just throttle it and I can still get it, just very slowly rather than have to say stop the data entirely cause I can't justify paying another 10 bux to go over.

----------

i read that too. but if he didn't read all those other threads you can keep your unlimited data when moving to the iphone 5 if on at&t. What loophole is he talking about then???

Dense person is dense.

He doesn't have the unlimited plan.
So he can't get it. He's trying to use a loophole to get the unlimited plan even though he doesn't have it. He has to have the original iphone to use this loophole (if it still exists). If it succeeds, he then can "grandfather" it to a new iphone.

I tried old versions of itunes and nothing. Please go ahead and confirm for everyone though. My test was not very scientific.

Can you elaborate? Which version of iTunes? Was this a brand new SIM? Was it on your existing line or a blank/new line? Why didn't it "work"?

It might be because I already have unlimited data (therefore grandfathered into unlimited options) but the original iPhone plans are definitely still in AT&T's system. This is from the AT&T website when you try to change your plan.

Had a 4S 2x (lost both), used my 3G backup (GF lost her 4S so now she's using 3G until 5 comes in), stuck using 2G for now.

*I used this loophole to get unlimited when we ported over last year for the 4S

Just because it's in your system on your account doesn't mean any AT&T rep will "add it".

Personally, we all know it's bullcrap that it's "not in their system", as a high up enough manager could add it. But, there has to be a way somehow to trick their system into adding it.

I read over on an XDA forum that someone managed to get an authorized reseller representative to add it to their 2G. I'm trying that first. If that fails, I'm getting a blank SIM and will go from there.

All else fails, I'll return the 2G.

What I did after the loophole was fixed? :
1. Bought a sim off ebay.
2. Bought an iphone 2g
3. Restored iphone 2g
4. Plugged into current version of itunes - I forget what screen came up, but noticed no option for unlimited
5. Tried a year prior version of itunes.
6. I believe nothing even popped up/wouldn't try and activate sim

I don't remember what versions I used sorry. Please go ahead and document it unlike me :(

I think you'd have to get an unactivated sim card from AT&T. Maybe an active one without data plan might work, but I would try both (for science)

The card I bought off ebay should have been a new one from ATT...at least that is what the listing said.

You CAN transfer ownership of grandfathered unlimited data plans. Of course if you have a family plan you probably won't be able to. I bought a grandfathered unlimited iPad plan (assuming the same for iPhones) when the iPad 3 LTE came out. Just transferred all the billing info, personal info, and device info (IMEI and sim card info) into my name and it was good to go.

I'd love to hear if you've tried this yet. I know someone with a 2G iPhone I might be able to borrow. Otherwise maybe it's time to make friends with someone working at AT&T ;)

I used this loophole when I get my iPhone 4S on a new contract. Glad I got unlimited and still have it on my iPhone 5.

It doesn't

I know this is a little past due, but I'll give you the raw deal from my actual experience.

IF you have a tiered plan, are trying use a 2g to retro back to unlimited, it's not going to work.

However , IF you are trying to add a new line with a 2g phone you can still get unlimited data because there are no other data options.

You can't activate the 2g phone thru the AT&T store or the apple store, and activation cannot be completed thruiTunes becuse apple has blocked all 2g phones from activation.

-you have to call apple directly, speak to numerous people untill they give you an engineer. At that point the engineer will "release" the imie or whatever it is for activation.-

With the 2g phone being activated, there is only an unlimited data option. This is the ONLY way to get unlimited data.
You can then immediately upgrade your phone and be grandfathered in.

This takes a ton of time on hold for apple, a ton of explaining, and some groveling, but they will do it.

I still do not think so! I had a rep accidently remove me from my unlimited plan and it took an act of congress to get it replaced.

I'm not talking about someone accidentially removing it from your account and adding it back on..
I'm talking about getting unlimited data added to your account!

Yeah, good luck with that.
You got better odds on hiting the lottery.
If you want to try and waste countless of hours and days chasing and fighting customer service reps and deal with all the frustration and bs go for it.
It still doesnt mean you will get it done and get unlimited data.

The only chance you have of getting unlimited data is to get a hold of a iPhone 2G, put an active sim card in it then wait a few minutes and log onto your at&t account. Once it recognizes you're using the iPhone 2G, if it shows the old data plans as available like it does in this pic then you should be able to select one. (Here is my account page with my iPhone 5 activated sim in my iPhone 2G.)

Did you do this recently and did you have a tiered data plan?
