Not in the sense I'm talking about relating to school and work. Sure you can do plenty on an iPad, but multi-tasking, doing research, writing papers, writing code, emails longer than a few sentences, editing video and photos well...Non of those things would I rather use an iPad for.

I can easily do research, write papers, make long emails, edit photos and videos, and other things quite well. But what fits you works best. I do very fine wether given a laptop or an iPad in School

I certainly use my MBA less since getting the iPad. At home I hardly use it at all actually. I'm either on my iPad or desktop. But I do a lot of network administration stuff at work and use my MBA almost exclusively.

Same thing happened to me with my MacBook pro, eventually I ended up having to use my MacBook pro for heavier work

I got an iPad as my first apple product and LOVED it, but quickly wished it could do a little more, so I'm now one of the many patiently waiting for the refresh to get a new MacBook. I plan to use my iPad in my travels, but will keep the MacBook at home for the heavier lifting. Either way, I'll have my bases covered.:D

I'd like to know how you guys can be functional on an ipad.

How can you multitask, listen to music, browse the web, run some serious software, watch movie all at the same time?

I am sorry but how is it possible that ios can be your main OS. You need atleast OS X or windows 7.

But for those things I'd assume you're using an external keyboard? Which would negate the purpose of the iPad. But if you don't then props for you being able to deal with that, I just know I couldn't type 10 page papers and whatnot comfortably with an iPad.

Ever since buying my MBA, I use my iPad more seldom. Don't get me wrong the iPad is perfect for surfing the web while "enjoying" a mildly interesting movie on the TV or to watch some youtube clips before going to sleep, but for anything else I still prefer a "real" :apple: computer.

Ipad has been relegated to being a midi-controller weather checker since getting the MBA 11". Really love this computer. Easy to cart around. Looks great. Works as a part of my studio nicely as needed.

Similar experience here. My 11" Air is easy to carry around and does everything I need, I including running the full version of Keynote. I still use the iPad, but less than I used to.

I barely use my MBA too, I almost always on my MBP. for that matter I rarely use my iMac since getting the MBA and MBP but its nice to have. The only time I really use my MBA anymore is if I am going somewhere and don't want to lug the MBP around, since my MBA is the 11 and is much smaller and lighter. While I don't use the MBA as much as I would like I still have no regrets buying it.

Answer me this: why on god's green earth would you need to listen to music, "run serious software" (whatever that means) and watch a movie at the same time? A.D.D. much?

I can't be fully functional on an iPad. I use my iPad for media consumption and on a few rare occasions I will type up a short paper or two on it. But I don't see anyway that someone be completely functional on an iPad, they just aren't designed for that. The iPad is great to complement your other Mac not to replace it. I think anyone who claims they are able to function fully on an iPad is being completely honest.

I have no idea why people keep trying to make the two compete...they don't work or act the same at all....but both have a place - and why apple makes both...

I'm certainly not fully functional on an iPad, I just use my MBA quite a bit less since getting one.

If you look at the trend, those who owned an iPad before an MBA report using their iPad less. Those who had an MBA before an iPad report using their MBA less. I think the general consensus is that they complement each other well.

Hence why I said it works best when I am using it for media consumption or to complement my MBP, MBA or iMac. I think the reason people try and replace a Mac with an iPad is because its still a new technology and is pretty capable and has a lot of apps to let it do similar things to a real Mac.

I guess it depends on what usage you require from your computers. If all you do is to consume content (email, facebook, youtube, internet browsing, etc), then the iPad might be enough. But as soon as you want to create any content at all, the iPad is no substitute for the MBA (or any other computer for that matter).

So you often browse the web, while simultaneously running various programs and also watching a movie and listening to music all at the same time?

This is where ADD is born.

totally true but there is a flip side - people are using ipads where clamshell laptops won't work - the cockpit, to view PDF's among groups - like at a jobsite or a car sales guy reviewing an electronic brochure with a customer prior to purchase. Walk on to any hospital ward and see how pads are used when MBA's won't cut it.

they are two diff things.....only sort sighted people "adore" one and diss the other. it's like saying your mini van that mom drives is stupid and your sports car is the only thing to own.......Ummmm.....no....

You have missed the point of his reply completely... Instead you have just really turned it inside out and started talking about stuff that has nothing to do with his affirmations. Just for the record: medics, airplane pilots, etc. are all CONSUMERS because they "consume" / "use" existing applications ( built by other people ) to ( help them ) get a certain job done! ( they use whatever apps they are allowed to use to the extend the app allows )

Your comparisons in regard to KohPhiPhi reply are totally off... He did not say that the iPad is not useful, it certainly is, but it is A LOT MORE LIMITED than a proper computer / notebook when it comes to CREATING more complex and new content from the group up! If you are a consumer yourself then an iPad will most likely serve you well, but if you are a creator ( software engineer, architect, designer, etc. ) then chances are that you are better off with a proper computer / notebook. It is that simple...

are people using their ipads as their only machines?

I am sorry but i think that is impossible. The multitasking alone limits its functionality and the user experience.

How can people use an ipad as their sole device?

You really do have ADD don't you ...

I have used my iPad and iPhone ( mainly the iPad ) as my "main device" for a bit more than 7 months. I am a software engineer by trade and although both devices are nice, I can not continue using only these two forever... I was limited to using these devices because of some health problems and other personal problems that eat up all my free time and I was simply not able to do more complex work at home ( i was still able to read up on programming topics, help people on forums, etc. but I was definitely not able to do any programming! ). Eventually those problems got solved and I started having more free time, time I could not utilize as usefully as I had wished because both devices are extremely limited when it comes to programming ( same goes for architecture, web design, complex video editing, etc. ).

Hence, I have started building a desktop computer ( using it for more "complex stuff" where as much speed as possible is more than welcome ) and bought a notebook ( a Macbook Pro ) for when I am not in the mood to sit infront of a 30" monitor at a table or I am on the road but I would still want to get some work done ( by "work" I do not mean "work for the company I am working for", but "personal projects" ).

If I were a consumer ( or even a journalist or someone working in a field where "content creation" is kinda equal to "writing articles" ) then the iPad would have been more than enough for almost all my needs, but because I need tools that allow me to create new content / tools, then the iPad simply doesn't cut it... My iPad still has its use ( especially when it comes to testing new software that should eventually run on it ) but for my needs, a proper computer / notebook will always be tad more useful.

PS: All my replies have been posted from the iPad...

I think it's possible for people who don't need multitasking :p

I also think Apple will try to differentiate the iOS to OS X as long as possible so the Macbooks and iPads will keep selling both as a complimenting product, rather than being a competition to each other.

Because that's basically the difference isn't it : the OS. The input method (keyboards and mouse) can be easily implemented IF the OS permitted it.

Something like Asus Transformer, but in Apple environment, would be incredible. imagine an iPad with dual OS : iOS and OS X. It will use iOS when you use it as a tablet, and will switch to OS X if that you dock it to a keyboard (also doubling the battery). The Dock (iDock?) will be in different models, some with extra GPU and CPU, extra disk space, etc. Now I'm rambling, lol.

My point is Apple would not do this I think, at least not now, when they can sell both MBAs and iPads in current numbers. So, just enjoy both if you can afford it, or pick the machine you most likely use.
