OP, if you're trolling, is this you?:

That's my SIM tracking from the micro emitters that let me get that photo...

Throw it in the river and deny all knowledge. How is that any worse than turning it over to the police? You lose the iphone either way and throwing it in the river won't get you charged with anything.

There's no karma from doing that... Throwing it in the river is, in fact, karma going back to a society stupid enough to criminalize the act of returning accidentally purchased stolen property.

Carriers have the ability to determine what phone you put the SIM card in, but I don't think you have anything to worry about turning it into the police. No civilized country I know of would try to convict you for something they have no proof of, well, unless of course the PD you're dealing with is corrupt, in that case, go to another jurisdiction and turn the thing in.

Considering karma is made up bs, i wouldn't worry about it.

Considering the real victim had their iPhone stolen and you are not in the least concerned with throwing said phone in the river... I think it is more a statement of what values are held and adhered to. Good luck with that.

I would be trying to find the owner, and would not be worried in the least about "the police." That is the bs in this thread.

Restore the iPhone to default and return it. CASE CLOSED. What is this sim card bs tracking? No man. They aren't going to do an investigation on a damn iPhone. It's just a phone.

Now if that phone killed someone somehow.. Then we have a problem.

Return the phone and leave it alone.

Here to see if the OP ended up in a Copenhagen jail making friends with a guy named Jurgen?

You dont want to use the phone cuase it is stolen.
You are scared to take the phone to police and get charged for nothing.
I have an option for you, since you are in doubt whether you will get charged or not and also you do not want to use the stolen iphone.
DO AS I SAY
Burn the phone or throw it in the lake…thats it and do not think about it.
You leanrned the lesson and just be more careful next time before purchasing used product.

This is why we have lakes and rivers. Use them!

Seriously? That totally sucks.

Why and how does that suck? I got mugged a while back and had my 4 stolen, but didn't expect apple to do anything. Their a device seller, not a carrier, it would be like looking to Sony if someone stole my PS3. I'm confused what people who proffer this actually want, a lowjack on your phone that can never be removed? Beyond privacy issues it's just not reasonable nor should be expected from a company.

Aye, these self righteous people are something else.

Stupid

You are stupid you deserve it.

----------

No I didn't know it was stolen, then I would've never bought it. But I still get charged if I return it in Denmark, since I bought it without warrenty, it is my fault :(

----------

617aircav, you really think he called the police? If yes then I'm screwed, cause they will never believe me :/ I really wish there was something I could do before returning it.

It is your fault you bought it stupid. Have fun in jail :p

Great. Just what we need. Another immature reply, specially from a first time replier above.

First..

1. Notify police of possible stolen phone that was purchased

2. They will ask a few questions such as, when, where and whom did you buy it from. How it was paid for. They will verify that the phone was stolen by a report. They will try to find the owner. They will try to find the thief. They will make a report, and book it as evidence.

3. They will not arrest you, unless they discover that your story is bogus and you were in fact the individual that took the phone. You need not worry about this unless you live in Russia ;).

4. If you toss it, or break it apart, in California, you can be charged with destroying evidence. Don't do this.

5. Don't listen to the immature drive by members on this thread. They are not helpful, nor grown ups.

I just bought a stolen phone on eBay! Fortunately the seller is a power seller so I am returning it for a refund. Many phones are not infact stolen, people are stupid enough to sell the iPhone to a online company, wait a month or so then report it stolen to claim on insurance.....and some of them get away with it!

That was what mine was, a fraud by the original "looser"

Actually I expect that companies would react to consumer demand for greater security and control over their phone if it is stolen, just like car manufacturers have done. Casual theft of modern cars is declining because they have focused on security. Perhaps Apple is thinking along these lines with regard to their acquisition of AuthenTec, but it should to other domains of operations as well such as Apple stores and iTunes..

If somebody presents a stolen phone at an Apple store without Apple confiscating the phone and contacting the police, then it seems to me that Apple is not being a very good corporate citizen.

Apple is a retail outlet and not a security company. They can't forcefully hold the phone, the person who brought the stolen phone in may demand it back. And then what? Apple employees can't act as enforcers just as other retail employees are not supposed to. Cars cost so much more money than phones, thus the large amounts manufacturers spend on security. My personal experience, I was in a print store when a lady came in to activate a stolen phone. She was told the phone had been reported stolen. She told the rep some bull story and said she was calling her husband. She stepped out with the phone sitting on the counter and didn't return. The sprint employee never told her to surrender the phone. Don't expect sales reps to be the police.
