I have an iPhone 3GS and have spent a good amount of time with the Pre. I'll still take the iPhone. My biggest thing about the Pre is the keyboard. I know they made the keyboard the way it is to be different but I think that the Pre would be a lot better if it had a slide out landscape keyboard.

@slappy

WTF was the point of that? How about you remove everything that the Pre does on that list. Then it would be useful. You did it for some, but you fail to acknowledge the replacements for those functions on the Pre.

How about browsing the web or doing anything data related while talking on the phone with the Pre?

I wonder why people fail to mention this when they talk about the Pre and it's 3rd party multitasking.

I raised the same point. I would think that it would be more critical to look up somthing on the web, or a app, such as sales force, while you are on the phone. That is the biggest fail on the Pre.

I agree the keyboard is kinda bummer. They both have pros and cons. The camera in the pre is amazing though.

Umm, this makes me question you even having an iphone. The iPod function is a background task that is always running. You can definitely listen to music and even change songs, volume, etc, through double tap of home button regardless of what application you are in.

Push works. In IM applications it's almost immediate.

Umm... wow. Pre, which runs Web OS is a complete, from the ground up OS that was started before the first iPhone launched. They didthing other than possibly getting some styling queues for the UI from the iPhone.

If anything it will be iPhone "ripping" from the Pre when they finally bring background apps to the iPhone in another year or two.
Seeing how other phones allow background 3rd party apps before the Pre came out how the heck would they be ripping of the Pre..

Hang on here; let's be accurate about this. The iphone software supports both push notifications (e.g. from IM programs) and push email.

Push notifications require the developers to write (or change) the app to take advantage of push, so we're only seeing apps with push notifications trickling in to the app store now.

Push email requires support from the provider. Gmail can push (it does so on the G1), and the iphone can get push email (it does so with mobile me), but google does not currently support push email on the iphone (or the Pre, as far as I know).

So I don't know whether you were talking about push notifications, push email, or some confused amalgamation of the two, but the iphone can do both. Whether or not the service provider (whether it be ESPN with push notifications or google with email) chooses to make use of that is another question.

I am talkng specifically about google not suporting push email on the iPhone. I use it a ton, and I know it isn't apple's fault, but I dunno whether google will support it now since they ahve their own phones to promote.

If you're getting someone a number from your phonebook to text them you could open your phonebook, glance at the number, switch back with one gesture to a txt and type it in. No copy/paste necessary. No home button necessary.

So, you saved one button push, and you're doing a swipe instead of a tap. And arguably, that's not something that's due to multitasking as it is to differences in interface design.

I wouldn't call this a strong argument for multitasking. And actually, I'd rather copy and paste the number, which I can now do.

That is a big fail, I just wonder why people fail to mention it when talking abou the Pre.

How would you feel if your computer couldn't multi-task? Or what if it could only multi-task with the music player? It's the same thing. You wouldn't tell people, "well then just close the active program then open another, it's just another mouse click" would you?

That is a big fail, I just wonder why people fail to mention it when talking abou the Pre.

You get used to it though. I've had it for like 20 hours and I can type pretty fast now. And my previous keyboard was very nice and spacious.

This was a huge issue with edge and the 1st gen iphones. I did not realize the Pre did this.

If so that is a massive deal breaker.

If you can't multi-task the most basic and substantial feature of the device, the phone, then what is the point?

No home button necessary. That's just one of many. Multi-tasking really is brilliant on the Pre, you have to try it. That said, I got a shiny new 3GS.

Can't you send someone a text directly from your phonebook on the iPhone? There is no need to be in the messages application first.

I was talking about sending someone a text containing the number of a different person in your phone book :)

It was just a simple example of why multi-tasking is good. Sure, there are other ways to do it, even on the iPhone. We have it on our computers, we love using the capability. A phone has it, it's a great feature. Pretty hypocritical of us to so casually dismiss a feature on a phone that we find indispensable on our computers...

Is this true for both their "1x" and "evdo"?

I was under the impression this was only true when on "1x" -- just like iPhone users wouldn't be able to use Data and Voice simultaneously if there was only an Edge signal.

yeah, that's copy / paste

But isn't this the exact situation that EVERYONE has been bitching about no copy / paste for the last year?

No one wants to read a number, remember it, change screens, then type it back in. if people wanted to do that, copy/paste would not have had the ridiculous thread popularity it has had.

i am also interested to see what happens when all the 3rd party apps start to hit the pre... and they all multitask with each other... badly, because that's what happens in coding. all the memory over-writes, bad reads, battery drain... it's gonna be real ugly on the pre 3rd party for awhile, i'll bet.

While Copying and Pasting the number would be fine, it seems the only way to do it in the iPhone is hit the edit button, select the number, and then copy it. I would have thought that you could just tap and hold on the number, but that doesn't work. Just something interesting I noticed.

I took the Pre for a spin at Best Buy the other day...it's ok it has it's pluses and minuses.

BUT THE KEYBOARD IS ATROCIOUS! People whining on the lack of a physical keyboard on the iPhone...The Pre's keyboard was so flimsy and tiny there is no way I could use it.

Also I thought the downgrade in build quality from my original iPhone to the 3G was bad...the Pre feels like some kind of cracker jack toy.

This is honest and un-biased.

The ability to do both voice and data at the same time is something no CDMA phones can do at this point. In other words, any phone on Sprint or Verizon Pre included can't do both voice/data at the same time. However when the Pre or any other WebOS devices comes to AT&T or T-Mobile the ability will be there.

Also keep in mind that while the iPhone 3G/3GS can do voice/data one must be in 3G coverage and using a 3G signal. Since my iPhone 3G was practically useless when I had 3G turned on thanks to dropped calls my phone was technically able to do both data/voice but limited by AT&T's poor coverage and 3G footprint. If you are using EDGE not only can you not use voice/data at the same time if you are using data any calls you get will be routed directly to voicemail. On EVDO any calls you get while using data will pause the data session and allow the call through.

Must be talking to the ol' lady if you need music to be playing during the phone call.

I'm sure this is a bug, but I can listen to music during a call, I did it by mistake, but it worked

I was using my new jawbone prime.

It was kinda cool, but I only had one volume for both... Which assured me it was a glitch.

The bottom line with the Pre is the OS is nice, the phone itself is a hardware disaster IMO. It feels cheap as hell, it can slice cheese with it's edge and the keyboard is practically a joke. Seriously, my daughter has toy cell phones that don't feel as cheap and plasticy as the Pre.
