Is "yo" still "cool"? I thought it was a 90's slang and is passé.

it's been used so long that it's just... like the word "uh"

it's nothing to be praised like it's a 'cool' thing to say. it's like typing with no caps, like most of us do.

i dont really understand why people had to jump on this guy's case for using a small word.

I also wish you could add things to a dictionary, or turn off the auto correct altogether I hate when I type lol and it turns it into LOL, and w/ to a/. really annoying to have to go up and hit the x

yo yo yo wut ^ mah homiez lolol nm nm dood just chillin with mah hoez n textin with mah iphone but it dont speak MY WAY cuz its MY WAY OR THE ALLY WAY YO! but this **** aint workin man cuz im ghetto straight up g im 2 good for an iphone

yoyo1.jpg

It gets even worse, because every single text message I send concerns yo-yo's.

My problem isn't yo but when it fixes a certain word to duck.

Its ducking annoying as duck.

so all the SMSes I send contain the word "Yo"

the problem is, I haven't been able to teach my iPhone that word. I every time I type "yo" it tries to suggest "to" which is annoying and interrupts my tying, anyway I can solve this?
The iPhone does not support Guido texting.
*ducks*
:p

Man this thread exploded. This is probably the funniest thread in macrumors. LOL!!!!

I think it is fair though. Sometimes we have to receive input and feedback from other areas to help us improve ourselves.

Certainly nothing bad can happen to you if you actually made a concerted effort to stop using YO in every single SMS message you send out.

It is actually possibly to properly express one's self even in modern mediums where lazy people think everything has to be shortened abbreviated and condensed.

If I went to a medical forum and asked how to score some heroin, might it not be a reasonable response for someone to suggest I might try just not using heroin?

Or should people only be here to be your own personal shell answer men, just specifically answering whatever question happens to tickle your fancy at the time? I hate to break it to you, that is not how internet forums work.

You really are full of yourself. It's annoying because you're also an idiot and your arguments don't hold up.

I agree on one thing - internet forums are full of (unwanted) opinions. It's easier to behave like a jerk when you're hidden behind your anonymity (as I am in the process of showing). However, why is it unreasonable for the OP to expect an answer to his question alongside those opinions? Make fun of his diction all you like, but also try to answer his question instead of just trying to get cheap (digital) laughs. His was a genuine query that showed up a real problem with the iPhone - I've had similar issues.

Why should he make a concerted effort to stop using 'Yo' in every message? Who are you to pass such a judgement? Do you think that because you write in full, grammatical sentences on an internet forum (truly a waste of time, but I've also fallen into that habit) you somehow have a greater authority to comment on people's lexicon? What if the OP is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the word is a part of his culture and upbringing? ;)

Moreover, the word 'Yo' is not, as you imply, "shortened, abbreviated and condensed". It is not an abbreviation at all, but rather a short greeting or exclamation (amongst other things, as the illuminating Wikipedia article pointed out). Far from being lazy, the OP may start every SMS with 'Yo' and follow it up with language that would not look out of place in a Shakespearean sonnet.

'Yo' is also not a product of modern culture and modern mediums of communication, as you again imply. As the handy OSX widget confirmed for me, it is a natural exclamation that was first recorded as far back as late Middle English.

Finally, why are you comparing asking how to save the word 'Yo' on MacRumors to asking how to score some heroin on a medical forum? That is a little extreme and ridiculous, if you ask me. I know that you're being purposefully hyperbolic, but that only means you have further to fall flat on your face because you're comparison is inaccurate. Since you were being unnecessarily pedantic about the OP's choice of language, I will do the same to you and take apart your comparison.

A medical forum is concerned with improving people's health, and increasing doctors' understanding of people's health. It is therefore reasonable for a doctor or medical student to refuse to explain to the addict how and where to find heroin because it is proven to severely damage mental and physical well-being. Internet forums however - full as they are of abbreviations, truncations, lack of grammar and so on - are hardly bastions of what one might call 'the full and proper use of the English language'. One would not expect to be criticised as a matter of course for using slang here. Obviously, that is not to say that a person couldn't be criticised for this on forums, it's just that your comparison is idiotic.

(by the way, now I come to think of it, no doctor in their right mind would "suggest not using heroin" to a possible addict, even on a forum; that would be the height of stupidity and irresponsibility. Most doctors would indeed direct the person to a place where they could, in some cases, "score" heroin (or an equivalent), but in a controlled environment in a hospital or a rehabilitation clinic.)

I agree. Oddly enough, my first gen iPhone was completely okay with my profanity. My 3G iPhone apparently got religion.

Can I trade it in for an atheist version?

Oh no! Now you can't text your homies. So sad... NOT!

What is wrong with all of you people? He came on a computer forum asking for help about his iPhone.

Do you get off on being pretentious under the extremely transparent guise of linguistic superiority on computer forums?

Relax.

google.com -->
"define: pretentious"
"define: guise"
"define: linguistic"
"define: superiority"

Oh.

Clearly, most of us aren't smart.

i think all iPhones should come with profanity in the dictionary.
its pretty common, he'll, all of us use it!
it should be included.
and why are you guys using abbreviations like "w/" when you have a full qwerty keyboard and have to switch to symbols to add the "/" when tis probably just easier to type "with".
i can understand using "w/" on a 9 digit alphanumeric keypad, but not a full qwerty where you have to switch keyboards.

oh, and since when have people used "yo" so regularly anymore?
odd...
