I missed this post. Point well made... for some magical reason is never works in reverse.

Because "whiteface" doesn't hold the same racist history in American culture as blackface. But that's not even the point of this discussion. Someone already pointed out, it's been done many times in modern movies. But either way, the arguments are moot cause the means of these roles are not meant to degrade, but entertain.

As far as retard goes, it's meaning has changed, and not meant to make fun of mentally challenged individuals, take it in context.

Tropic Thunder is way better than Huckleberry Finn. I mean who wants to read about some kid on a raft anyway? Tropic Thunder has explosions and stuff.

Finn is a book, Thunder isn't. Hard to compare, as it looses something in the translation when an explosion is written about, rather than seen.

The Mickey Rooney film version, though is much better that Tropic Thunder - you've got to admit that at least.

Maybe I just don't like Ben Stiller..

I, for one, do not see the humor in this at all.

I will not see this movie, because it belittles the disabled. I also refuse to listen to anything Bill Maher has to say, as he once compared the mentally handicapped with pets. I also have not purchased Nike merchandise, since they ran an ad that mocked those in wheelchairs.

I also think less of those who casually use the word "retard".

Oh, yeah, if you parked illegally in a handicap-designated parking space and found your car towed away, that was me also.

Retard is offensive, I vote for "differently abled"!

Just kidding. Seriously though, political correctness has gone too far already.

I actually went a saw Tropic Thunder the other night. It was probably the funniest movie I've seen in a while. Tom Cruise is frakkin riot in this film. Also the fake trailers that play before are hilarious.

Oh and the bit about the retard is funny too. Ben Stiller's character playes a retard in his movie "simple jack" and it happens to be the only movie the asian poppy growers have to watch. So they Make Stiller's character play it live every night as torture.

How many groups can you get pissed at you in a non-PC comedy these days?

At least with this type of movie, you can always promote the movie with a, "If you aren't protesting our movie yet, wait for the sequel" t-shirt.

YOU CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!! You MUST be joking!!!! I can't take the ignorance of people just like YOU!!!! I mean really think about it...Do you have kids? What if you child was born and something happened that resulted in them having some form or Mental Retardation...or maybe the are 6yrs old and get hit by a car which leave them Mentally retarded.... I HOPE and pray NEVER experience the pain of WATCHING and LISTENING to people just like YOU make fun of YOUR child!!!!!!!!!!!!

And for those others on the boards...The medical term "retardation" has been used and abused in society for SOOO long that medical staff use it far and few between. Society has DISGRACED the word so much that anytime its used..its hurtful and degrading!

Wow, it is a movie. Get over it, really...

My 2nd youngest cousin (who I am very close to) has downs syndrome and I am not offended by this movie in the least. Would I ever call someone retarded in order to belittle them or insult them? No. But again, I am not offended by this movie and the use of the word "retard" in it. It is a MOVIE!!!

I think that being PC has gone way overboard in America. It seems that no one can take a joke any longer and this country has turned into a bunch of censored prudes. Anyone who has traveled abroad can vouch for this. I spend a good amount of time in the UK and in Germany and those two countries are much more lax than we are.

"Uh oh, we better not say that or we might offend someone"

Get over it.
