Ok I think I am in a Big Pickle here as far as restoring and re-jailbreaking my iphone goes...I think those options are a nil for me (as far as I know).

A week ago I upgraded my 3.1 Untethered (5.11.07) jailbroken 3Gs to 3.1.2 jailbroken (5.11.07) without a hitch using a custom 3.1.2.ipsw by simply putting my iPhone in RECOVERY MODE (USB and iTunes logo) and using the SHIFT>Restore option!

It worked just fine then, no need to use special tools ie: Pwnage tool, Redsn0w etc.

This was quite simple and headache free, and got me really excited about how it bypassed the Apple signature etc.

Fast forward today, now that I am on J.Broken 3.1.2 (5.11.07) I wanted to just do a simple restore (and re-jailbreak)of my phone.

I tried the exact same method that I explained in the above paragraph (Putting the phone in recovery mode, SHIFT>Restore and direct the iphone to the custom 3.1.2.ipsw) but NO CIGAR!!

iTunes sure enough contacted Apple, and Apple sure enough told me the usual...

Now I have no idea what to do at this point, has my options of restoring and re-jailbreaking my iPhone while still staying on 3.1.2 and 5.11.07 ran out? or I just have to use another method now? ie Redsn0w or Pwnage etc. (NOTE: I only have access to a PC at this point)

How do I make good use of the SHSH on Cydia? or do I even need to access the SHSH files ?

I am lost, any help would be appreciated, thanks

EDIT: Just for the record I haven't updated my iTunes to today's latest 9.1, it's still on 9.0.3 firmware

Looks like you didn't edit your hosts file.

Did you read this? http://www.saurik.com/id/12

Ok I tried that, but still I got the same result..didn't work.

I edited my

"C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" file by adding this line at the very bottom of the document

"74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com"

but nothing changed still Apple detected my 3.1.2 and gave me the "doesn't support the requested build..." pop up

Not sure if I missed anything else in that article

Bdubb: the fact that you are getting this message means one of two things:

1) Your phone is no longer pwned.

or

2) You are trying to restore to an official firmware.

If your phone were pwned and you were trying to shift-restore to a custom firmware, your phone would not even do a signature check and your hosts file and SHSH would be completely irrelevant.

thats exactly what I thought, well I think (call me stupid or crazy) but I believe my phone "UnPwned" itself, well I remember once I brought it home as a "virgin" not jailbroken before 3Gs 3.1. I tried to SHIFT restore to Official 3.1.2 and this was just a week an a half ago and of course iTunes did the signature check and denied me.

retreading my steps from last week, I simply used BlackRain to jailbreak the 3.1 first, then I used (ilikemyiphone.com's) custom 3.1.2 .ipsw and also his Restore mode to SHIFT method to upgrade to 3.1.2.

And sure enough when my phone "restored" (booted back up) it was on 3.1.2, fresh interface and Cydia icon (app) on page two.

So that should prove one thing if not two, it should be good evidence that the 3.1.2.ipsw was indeed a custom one
But I am not sure if my phone was ever Pwned, since the only 3rd party tool I used to jailbreak it (so far) is blackRain when it was on 3.1, and I am pretty sure blackRain does just that...Jailbreaks your phone but doesn't Pwn it.

How did the phone bypasss the iTunes verification when I restored the 3.1 to a custom 3.1.2 ?...beats me, if the answer to that is.."Because the 3.1.2 IS a CUSTOM firmware" then ok fine, but why can't I (re)restore the phone using exact same method and the exact same custom 3.1.2.ipsw file while being on 3.1.2?

From your observations Thelatinist, I am guessing the only way to be sure my phone can be restored to 3.1.2 again is to Pwn it properly. But since I don't have a Mac (or even access to one) not sure what other options I have

2) You are trying to restore to an official firmware.
.

Thelatinist, I have never doubted your expertise since the day I've came and registered on these forums,

I am pretty certain my problem is what I quoted you on above...Since I had quite a few 3Gs 3.1.2.ipsw files kicking around my desktop (One being Custom Unlocked, another Custom Locked, and another Non-custom Apple official...etc.)

I am guessing, somehow I accidentally threw my custom Locked 3.1.2.ipsw in the trash and just held on to the non-custom official one. and I am actually trying to restore my phone with the wrong .ipsw...

I will try to make a custom one from scratch and have another go at this. And report back to make sure if this is/was the problem.

thanks

EDIT : SURE ENOUGH, SURE ENOUGH...I WAS ATTEMPTING TO RESTORE TO A (NON-CUSTOM) OFFICIAL 3.1.2.ipsw!!

Damn you Latinist!! you're good man, you're good!
