Simple glasses that can do what AVP (and other VR headsets are doing) are so far in the future

Decades, barring some massive change in battery technology.

This is not a "next year" or "next version of AVP" thing at all

Or massive change in chip and screen technologies that draw less energy, which is exactly what is happening.

It would require technological breakthroughs (e.g. for the power source) that are impossible to predict. I'd say 15 years at least, but could also be 50.
How much more would XReal’s products be in 15 years?

I’m surprised Apple didn’t go the route of North Focals. That was probably the closest I’ve seen to mainstream potential for a headset/glasses type device. It also doesn’t run into the awkward headset problem and the the dead end of vr with passthrough video for the outside world.

I also did the Demo today... I was blown away by the Immersive videos towards the end of the demonstration. Never experienced anything like this. I'm not personally buying one, I could buy tons of em if I wanted, its just I spend enough time on a computer/iphone already and I prefer some nature and disconnecting :) To those who purchased or are about to....ENJOY! It really is an incredible device with a strong future. Wild.

Can you buy me one then? I’ve had enough nature for a while.

How good are the optics and resolution/sharpness compared to the quest 3? can you still count pixels?

It’s not a real question. Speculation about the future is easy. Will this company even be around in five years? And are we to suppose that Apple and the others stand still over that 15 years?

I just don’t get the point of your post. You could have shown the RayBan glasses too. Neither one is anywhere near the ballpark of what Apple is doing.

Because compared to Vision these don’t do much?

Remember though, tech hits walls

Go back 15 years from now and the trajectory at the time would have led folks to think we'd be WAY further along on a whole bunch of metrics

You can't just map trajectories like you're suggesting

Go back even further. In post WWII America people were absolutely convinced that by 2000 we’d have technology that we’re not even close to achieving yet, if ever.

Speculating about the future is fun, but it’s a virtually impossible game on a horizon much beyond 20 years or so.

I think the laws of physics have to enter the discussion at some point. People keep saying that the this is just a first gen product and subsequent iterations will be so much better, etc. Future generations of this device might be a somewhat smaller and lighter but do I ever see something like this being the size and weight of a normal pair of glasses, or a contact lens? Never. You'll still need some type of external battery.

That being said, I read something today that makes me think that there will be a future for these types of devices. Someone in another thread posted that they recorded a spatial video or whatever its called of their sleeping infant. Watching it again was described as the closest that they could ever come to reliving a memory. That really stuck with me, having experienced loss of loved ones in the past year (my dad and my dog). A headset type device as an alternative type of monitor for a computer or tablet device is very appealing, especially when it would allow reliving a treasured memory of a loved one or a special place. It would be a much more logical application in my eyes anyway than having computer strapped to my forehead all day.

But you don’t need a 3500 device to view 3d videos.

I completely disagree on the timing. Look, what has to happen is the whole computing part needs to be in a pocket with a battery. Then, need ultra low latency data stream from cameras to the pocket computer and back to the displays. Then you see the transparent OLED at this year’s CES, yup right there is a lens and display at once. Instead of faking the transparency can actually have it and turn on and off immersion.

As a former engineer, I would say the technology isn’t quite there but I have several ideas all ready on solving many of the things. Now, what I propose would be more like a true AR/VR situation. But, I can easily imagine a full immersion headset that adapts to it for watching movies and what not.

Right now what Apple has is inelegant as many have said. The tunnel vision sucks - but for a first generation product, what it offers is a glimpse into the future. I have had it since launch day around 2:30pm. I basically have done everything with it - and not too far off from Casey Neistat’s video of him riding a skateboard down the street in NYC with it on or going through the subway, it shows it’s not as far off as people think.

Right now the tunnel vision taking away peripheral vision is I believe a bigger obstacle than the weight or size of the device. But if I can think of solutions, and I have spent the last 20 years in upper education and finance, so real engineers could come up with solutions quicker.

What I think Apple needs is developers to make this a hit. If I were AAPL, I would immediately take a different approach. One, I would provide it for half off for developers who submit an app concept that they’re working on that meets a criteria.

2. Eliminate all fees for developers who develop an app for the Vision Pro for the lifetime of the OS. So if you are FaceBook and develop your Meta world into Vision Pro, no fees ever. If you’re a small developer who wants to create an app like as a music studio, that’s cool. Gaming, awesome. Just any developer who does more than let’s say $50k in Vision Pro apps gets no fees for life. This would ensure new fresh ideas and it just takes one amazing app to make this revolutionary and life changing must have for all doctors, technicians, engineers, or even consumers.

3. Repair all developer relationships by cutting all fees to 10% for all apps and in app purchases. Right now Apple wants to fight and show dominance. The iPhone isn’t going to dominate forever. Far more likely VisionOS is around in 25 years than iOS.

4. Stop being the bully and engage with and appreciate what consumers, developers and all stakeholders provide for the platform and the ecosystem.

This strategy would cost Tim’s services growth to stagnate for maybe four to six quarters, then AAPL would see growth for decades due to the goodwill it created. Rather than lawyer up and show off dominance and bullying appreciate all stakeholders not just focus on shareholders. I say this as an AAPL investor who runs an investment company. Capitalism is good, but greed at the top is not good - the future will be run by companies working together with all stakeholders like it used to be when there was a strong middle class in America.

flight attendants are far too professional to roll their eyes at AVPs. And have you seen the neck braces, sleep masks, and other things people wear on flights? Sorry, the older you get the less concerned with looking cool and just getting on with living your best life you get. Anyone who thought I was rude for quietly minding my own business and wearing my APV while seated? Not at all concerned about their opinions. And there are already threads here of people wearing them on planes and the overall comment is no one cares. Not the flight attendants. Not fellow passengers.

I know I wouldn’t care. The most annoying person is that one next to you who drags the laptop out and tries to do work. Or even watches a movie. Because unfortunately I have to see it too.

At least with a headset he can do what he wants in vr land and leave me out of it.

But that content. Who’s going to make it? It’s like the old days of one 4k channel on direct tv. I don’t see apple cranking this stuff out.

Apple put these on as teasers to sell a demo. You can see similar on a quest 3 and that stuff is much easier to see because Apple has disabled safari or intentionally prevents YouTube on safari from playing this type of immersive content.

Apple of course is doing this to protect us. It’s not high quality enough. We don’t think you should see it.

When evaluating avp to purchase you really need to ignore the immersion stuff at end. That’s barebones on this device. Or wait til sports and this type of stuff is abundant in this immersive format.

Then you see the transparent OLED at this year’s CES, yup right there is a lens and display at once.
Transparent OLED tech is completely irrelevant. When the screen needs to be centimeters from your eye, you need to put a lens between the screen and your eye to be able to focus on it. But then you can no longer focus through the screen to the real world.
But if I can think of solutions, and I have spent the last 20 years in upper education and finance, so real engineers could come up with solutions quicker.
If you can think of solutions unconstrained by physics, that means real engineers can come up with solutions that have to conform to reality?
