I had pretty much researched the ipod touch. seen as though i saw the iphone from its launch and through to its release.
when they released the touch, i jumped over my head. read a macworld all about it on my october holiday and then bought one when i got home =]
i loved it, but now i miss old ipods, i agree with danny_w, you cant reach into your pocket and play/pause and stuff like that. you have to get out the iod, sliiiiiide to unlock and do all that.
I was just wanting some feedback on what you thought =]

Not sure if you're old enough to remember when the original iPods only had 5GB of storage and cost more (7 years ago!) than the iPod touch does today, but being on the leading edge of consumer technology is rarely inexpensive.

Being on the out-going end of consumer technology (i.e. the iPod classic, with its non-touch screen and thicker, spinning hard-drive) is always more affordable.

Haha yeah! My first iPod that i still have is a iPod Mini and it cost be $350 at the time! And an ipod touch for cheaper than that can do so much more and cheaper!

Wow some people on here can be harsh, and this guy wasn't trolling, jeez.

I agree with the OP about the reasons for switching to a thicker iPod, I used to own a touch as well, and although I never scratched or damaged it in the 8 months I had it, I did always feel like it needed to be taken care of, and when I did put it in a pocket (or even my back jeans pocket by mistake), I was sure I was going to snap it in half. Ok, so the thing is strong, but the thin point is still valid from an ergonomics stand point. The iPod touch and the nano are TOO thin to be comfortable to hold in the hand.

Having gone back to an old iPod photo (40gb, the fattest iPod ever made I think), I just love the solid feeling, you could probably severely injure a mugger with the damn thing. Also, the tactile feedback of the clickwheel I've found to be much more practical for day-to-day music while travelling.

Sadly, for all its beauty, the iPod touch still needs a few more additions to make it the best iPod ever, for everyone.

The troll alert wasn't about the OP, another user came to the thread, said some pretty rude and attacking words towards the OP, and gave the OP advice without even reading the original post, so the advice didn't even apply to the situation. But the mods quickly took care of it, as they always do.

Those are good points, but we can't forget one thing, it is a first generation device. I am sure that the next release will take care of a few of our concerns, but will not take care of all of them, maybe a rocker on the side for volume control like the iPhone, and maybe another button similar to location of the silence button on the iPhone which could play/pause the device. It might make it slightly thicker (which some people would like, I for one would not), but it would take care of some of the major concerns.

By the way... I purchased the iPod touch because it can do WAY more than an iPod... the iPod part of is only a fraction of what it can really do. I use my iPod touch in my car and I have the Griffin Auto Pilot so I can charge my touch and play music through the AUX on my CD player... and the Auto Pilot lets me control the touch with the manual controls on the charger unit so I never even have to touch the screen. Pretty snazzy.

I love my iPod Touch

I have a 16GB and just love it. I have dropped it once on bricks (ouch) it dented the corner of the iPod but it still works great. I have also scratched the screen somehow, still trying to figure out how I did that, but it still works great! And I agree with you about the thinness for the most part, but that is why I got an Incase case for it. Overall, I am very happy with my iPod Touch, it is a really durable piece of technology from Apple!

I don't have an iPod Touch, but I do have an iPhone. People are jumping all over the OP saying that he didn't study enough before buying. While that may be true, there are some things that you just never find out until you actually use something. I bough an iPhone well after they came out, and after I had spent considerable time in the stores trying them out. However, after using it for a while, I found that I also do not like the iPod (music) functions very well, and I consequently hardly ever use them. The touch screen is not for everyone; I like the positive click wheel and buttons much better for playing my music; I can skip forward of back, pause, play, etc. without having to look at the screen, unlike on the iPhone or Touch. I too would much prefer an iPod Classic or Nano compared to this iPhone (but I like everything else about the iPhone).

I agree about the music app. I find it quite cumbersome. The volume slider can be difficult to slide, and it is very imprecise (compared to on, say, the Classic). It also bugs the crap out of me that with podcasts, it won't jump right into the next new episode after finish an episode ahead of it (the Classic, and others I assume, jump right into the next episode).

So if I were going for just a music player, the Classic (or Nano) is the better route. However, on the Touch, the music app is only one part of a multifunction device. The internet browser and wifi alone make up for the more cumbersome music app in spades.

you know, you can buy cases that make it consideraby thicker - almost as thick as the iPhone...

The Griffen leather hard-shell I use adds about 4 mm worth of thickness to the touch... It's just over 12mm in the case vs. 8 mm without, so about 50 percent thicker.

Good point. I do agree that it was easier to control these things on the old iPod, but I personally usually did not control my iPod without seeing it, so the transition to the Touch went smoother for me than for others.

Although this still isn't as good an option, I wanted to make you aware of a feature on the Touch you may not have known. You do not need to slide to unlock to access music controls. By simply pressing the home button twice, the slide to unlock screen will come up, along with music controls at the top of the screen for Play/Pause, Rewind/Fastforward, and Volume. You might find this to be a useful and quicker feature.

I Love mine! I would want it any thinner, or thicker. I have run out of space on mine, but the 32Gb wasnt out when i got my 16Gb, so what can i do?

I use mine far more as a web surfer than a Music player, but i use this about 5 times more when listening to music than my 60Gb Video, it was too big and heavy, this slips in my pocket, and i can almost forget its there.

Will definitely be picking up the next revision, providing there is a size increase to 64Gb, as soon as there is, and its under £400, im sold!

i only have 8gigs which was bloody 200 quid . i need more space.

Depending on when you bought it, this was your own doing. If it was a recent purchase, which I'd assume since you're now just complaining, you could've bought 4x that capacity (now counting what your budget is, of course).

I also dont like how thin it is, i am afraid to take it anywhere because it might snap.

You'd be surprised. Apple makes amazingly sturdy products, and they pride themselves on it. Like past iPods, I'm sure they wouldn't put it out if it wasn't sturdy (besides backscratches [invisiSHIELD!]). The only incident that I've ever seen was on Wikipedia, and the damage was caused by "excessive" >

I am selling it now for £140 and buying an ipod classic!
much nicer =]

Well, Like i said before. If you're on a budget, the iPod classic is definetly better for the buck (storage-wise). However, it can't be denied that the touch is the future of iPods and has Apple's mobile concept platform on it (iPhone) ... So you're Classic will be obsoleted sooner than you think. If you can, an extra $100 for the 16 GB might keep you current for a year or 2 more. That's Apple for you.

I really like my iPod Touch. Although it bothers me with how dirty the screen always is. I know it's a touchscreen and all but still. haha I don't think I could go back to a Classic.

Wow, it looks like somebody took a hammer or something to that screen. (looking for it on wikipedia right now to find out what really happened)

Just thought i would ask if there is anyone else that really doesn't like their ipod touch and whether i am the only one.
i dont like the ipod app, its annoying and fiddly and i only have 8gigs which was bloody 200 quid . i need more space.

$200 for a device like the touch is not all that bad.As for the classic beeing much nicer.Well the touch is a full featured while the classic is just a mp3 player that it.

I don't care that you do not like it. You knew it was 8gb when you paid 200 quid. Why are you acting surprised?

I can't speak for the iPod Touch crowd but for my storage problem on my iPhone, I went and bought a 160GB Classic that I use to sync EVERYTHING from my iTunes. Basically, it's a backup of my iTunes (along with my Time Machine backups) but I also use it on long drives as well. When driving about town I just use my iPhone, which works wonderfully. I will chime in and say using the touch screen without looking doesn't work too well (I'm sure some people can get used to it) but I never expected it to work the same way as a click wheel. The only time I fret about space on my iPhone is when I want movies with me. Only being able to sync 2 or 3 movies at a time is kind of rough but I have decided to take my MacBook with me when on trips or flights, which makes it super easy to re-sync some new movies.

I gave my sister an iPod Touch for Christmas and she loves it. Not sure if she is bothered by the same faults as the OP or some others but she is really enjoying it.

this seems to be all your fault for not doing any research before buying it:confused:

Really? Can't you just double tap the home button then use the resulting controls? It's features like this that help. With some practice I can just slide my hand into my pocket and change the song/ volume. See if there's a fix for your 'problem' (not really a problem) before complaining!

There is a hack, I'm not sure how effective it is, that lets you use different finger motions on the screen when it's locked in order to change the track and volume, which would be handy if it's in your pocket.

i am getting one free with my macbook pro. i can only get the 8gb one because of a lack of money. i will probably just end up selling it. i would just prefer a classic as well.

That's a crap reply. Are you saying that everyone who lined up to get the iPhone on the first day of release over a year ago was obligated to like it? Yeah, they all had high hopes but that doesn't mean everyone is ga-ga for it. The same applies to the Touch. If the original poster bought it on day of release then how is he supposed to know how it would suit him after real usage?

I don't have an iPhone or a Touch. Mainly price reasons coupled with the fact that my 3rd gen iPod is still going strong. I'm considering the Touch after the 2.0 software is released but still have reservations due to the need to keep your eyeballs on it for song changes, volume adjustment, etc. I'm also a bit concerned about its ability to be used with one hand. The movie/videocast playback is a huge plus. As is the WiFi.

you've obviously never installed pockettouch, I use it everyday and never have to get my ipod out to change tracks I just swipe the screen and ta da new track playing on shuffle.

as for this nonsense about it not being sturdy bloody hell man get a grip, do you go round trying to bend ipods in half or something? most action my pod sees is being taken out my pocket to be turned on standby

Yawn

WAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!

Stop crying. Who cares if you don't like the Touch. Go ahead and buy an iPod Classic. Only means you won't benefit from using the new App Store now.

Enjoy!!!

The new App Store will cost touch users $10 (USD), Apple's trying to keep the iPhone higher up.

I bought the $20 software update with my 'Pod. It was O.K. But when I jailbroke I realized the iPod's full potential. It's amazing once you jailbreak it!
