I think the only place that we may see TouchID continue would be Apple's wireless keyboards - for the desktop Mac's (when they get refreshed). They'll definitely have an update every year, just don't know what it'll be called -- can it be the "9" when there's already the ten?
Also, they wanted to have both Touch ID plus Face ID on the X, they just couldn't get the tech to work properly for this iteration. Would they be willing to go back to the original plan and reintroduce Touch ID in addition to Face ID in new phones or just deprecate the feature altogether for the future?
At first I thought the same thing, that the X was a special anniversary edition, and that next year's models (9 and 9 Plus) may integrate Face ID in some way and an OLED screen, but retain the 8 and 8 Plus forms/bodies. I can also see them improving upon the cameras (both front and back).
