1. if they dont update im more than happy as id like to make use of money spent

but i think they did this for the 10 year anniversary

usually every year they put out one phone 6 7 8 this time it was iphone 8 and 10 lol

so im thinking next year?9?

i just dont see them producing expensive phones every year

i think they will update the 8 to 8s with oled

There will be an update next year, we just don't know what it is called. No more home button or touch ID moving forward though. Likely an updated X size/design and an X designed Plus size.

Same form/size, maybe they will just increase the speed of Face ID and a few other spec bumps?

Iphone 9 can still be a thing, if they are getting rid of the "S" cycles and give the damn design a refresh already!

I was thinking a spec bump to this years X and maybe more colors, and a Plus the following year, but of course this is just mere speculation...

There's 0% chance they don't refresh iPhone next year. There will always be a new iPhone every year as long as it's not discontinued and Apple is still in the electronics business.

Right...the iPhone is their major source of revenue, but Apple will skip an opportunity to do a refresh???

The 8/8+ form factor is at an end. You'll see an XI and XI+. In terms of those that have an X, guessing the only upgrades will be a new CPU and further tweaks of the camera. Likely nothing to really drive a lot of X users that aren't on IUP to upgrade.

Edit....or could be 10s and 10s+

Apple will never market a phone as XS....that's just too on the nose. ;)

At first I thought the same thing, that the X was a special anniversary edition, and that next year's models (9 and 9 Plus) may integrate Face ID in some way and an OLED screen, but retain the 8 and 8 Plus forms/bodies. I can also see them improving upon the cameras (both front and back).

They'll definitely have an update every year, just don't know what it'll be called -- can it be the "9" when there's already the ten?

Also, they wanted to have both Touch ID plus Face ID on the X, they just couldn't get the tech to work properly for this iteration. Would they be willing to go back to the original plan and reintroduce Touch ID in addition to Face ID in new phones or just deprecate the feature altogether for the future?

I think the only place that we may see TouchID continue would be Apple's wireless keyboards - for the desktop Mac's (when they get refreshed).

If they want the Mini to use Face ID, then they'll need to come out with a standalone Apple webcam that many of us could put on top of our TV's (for those of use using the Mini as an HTPC) :D

Definitely see the MacBooks going to FaceID.

Edit: I also have a sneaking suspicion that Apple may re-enter the display market. Certainly hope so...they made just gorgeous displays!! :)

This makes sense to me! The X may have just been a special edition, and the more mainstream "9" can introduce two screen sizes with Face ID and of course less bezel! They should also come at a lower price which will bring in even more users.

Apple loves money.

They could afford not updating the SoC but would fall behind even further in camera quality, display, and battery life. I can see an update but nothing too major except 4 GB RAM and slightly better SoC, display, and cameras.

Since when did they skip an update to a flagship? SE wasn't a flagship when released and catered for the budget conscious, niche market that likes compact phone, and developing countries.

I could see the X being a one-time spelling thing. Then it goes back to numerical like 9, 10s, or 11. Apple blew a good branding opportunity. Should have pronounced it Eks and have an iPhone X-series.

Many people prefer to call it The X because it rhymes with seX.

IMO, it makes so much sense for Apple to release a X+ next year... A typical person keeps their phone for about 2 years. The lack of an X+ option now means that many current iPhone users will be tempted to upgrade if Apple releases an X+ next year, even if they own a one year phone (8, 8+ or X). In other words, people will upgrade earlier than they normally would.

Unless there are technical issues that prevent that, it is probably in Apple’s financial interest to release a X+ next year.

I feel pretty confident that next year we'll see a regular and Plus-sized iPhone X design. It seems like the logical next step. What Apple will name the phone is a different matter entirely -- their naming schemes are always in flux. Will Apple go back to "S" cycle names, e.g. - iPhone X S? Or maybe they'll just go to XI (or stylized as "11"; they may drop the roman numeral numbering after this year).

The bigger question is... what happens to the lower price points? The iPhone X is $999. That price point is here to stay. Will the iPhone X drop in price next year to make room for the X(S) and X(S) Plus? Or will we (gulp) see the iPhone 8 design recycled for a FIFTH year? That's what I'm curious about.
