Numbering scheme = Annual iPhone updates

The whole reason Apple uses a numbering scheme is to encourage everyone to buy a new device every year. They call it the iPhone X (ten) for a good reason. Not "ex" because that breaks continuity.

So yes, there will be an update. The camera needs updates. Battery, water resistance, A12, 4GB RAM.

The GPU on the A11 isn't massively different compared to A10 because this is Apple's first attempt at an in-house GPU design. They probably erred on the side of caution. I would expect a larger performance increase next year.

they will not update the design of the X, but will update the specs, add a gold color and I'd be shocked if they don't release a plus size version. The 8/8plus is the last in that reiteration of that design. There won't be a 9

Or will we (gulp) see the iPhone 8 design recycled for a FIFTH year? That's what I'm curious about.

Not a chance. The 6/7/8 design is going extinct.

No way Apple will looks foolish if the price was that high, 1,100 for a XL maybe

Weren't you also part of the group that just a few months ago was saying that Apple would be foolish to charge $1,000 and over for an iPhone and that people would NEVER pay $1,000 for an iPhone????

, 1,100 for a XL maybe

the 256gb costs $1,150 and that seems to be the more popular model. the XL won't be less than that in a best case scenario

i mean next year's hardware has probably already been locked in place. and maybe the year after that. #roadmap.

I think that they will come out with a 9, with a x alongside still as a premium model.

I agree with this, but the X will see updates, or the 9 will end up with some of the internals (e.g. processor, camera) being better than what is in the X, which would never happen.

To add, I don’t think they will totally abandon Touch ID anytime soon. It will be too soon and they may lose potential customers who are not ready for a change. It’s like when they started selling the retina MBP’s, they still offered the older style MBP with the built in optical drive. Just my .02.

There will be an updated X next year IMO. I also think we will see a plus version as well. I know a lot of people who would buy a plus version.

I think the only thing that will potentially keep TouchID is if the big corporations don't approve the FaceID feature on the iPhones being linked to corporate e-mails. My current company have banned us from even upgrading to IOS 11 yet due to security concerns, and I heard KPMG have banned FaceID on corporate used devices.

...and two years from now when they face out Face ID, out comes the shining 11. For a marketing standpoint, I don’t think it makes sense to skip 9, but then again I’m only a consumer.

And that to, I totally forgot. Just like some companies are not updating their operating systems.
[doublepost=1510182248][/doublepost]I know a bit corny but did you hear that the iPhone 7, 8 (ate) 9?

Haha

I think they keep the same form exactly. They will barely meet demand until around march next year and there is a big shortage of oled screens atm from what I gather.

I think they will add that faster scrolling screen refresh thing they did with the new iPad. It’s meant to make the screen really fluid when scrolling. Will be a big selling point and they will add a few colours like gold.

I think 2019 for the XL. But what do I know! All the people holding off this time round will upgrade then.

Today I was setting up my mrs on my old 7 from a 6 and she was saying what does it do better. Couldn’t really think of that much but Apple have a way of making you upgrade for the most minor features.

Ming-Chi Kuo: 2018 iPhones Will Have 'More Complex' Metal Frames for Improved Cellular Signal Transmission
https://www.macrumors.com/2017/11/06/kuo-2018-iphones-more-complex-frames/
There will undoubtedly be a change in change in design, probably minor on the inside to support 4x4 MIMO. Perhaps the stainless steel band will be updated as well to accommodate the change.

In terms of pricing, there's certainly room for an iPhone 8s or 9. Keep in mind there's still a big chunk of customers in developing countries looking for an affordable iPhone bigger than an SE.

$449 | 7
$549 | 7 Plus
$549 | 8
$669 | 8 Plus
$699-$799 ??
$899 | X
$999 | 11
$1099 | 11 Plus

Apple will go back to the numeric naming like 10s or 11. So years from now, people can always refer to your iPhone X as "The X"..

iPhone X owners = Generation X

According to Ive's interview, it seems like the iPhone X really was a one-time thing:

"What I think is remarkable about the iPhone X is that its functionality is so determined by software. And because of the fluid nature of software, this product is going to change and evolve. In 12 months' time, this object will be able to do things that it can't now. I think that is extraordinary. I think we will look back on it and see it as a very significant point in terms of the products we have been developing."

I'm also excited that the phone will apparently be "different" in 12 months' time than what it is now by virtue of software developments.

Nope. He's saying that it's a significant step forward.
