iPhone 12 I don't want to go back to fingerprint scanners again...

FaceID is so much better than TouchID.

Maybe it's because I've always had TouchID and only recently bought an iPhone 12 mini, but FaceID kicks TouchID's butt.

I love just looking at my phone to unlock it. It's like magic. With touch ID, I would have to place my finger on a certain area of the screen where as with FaceID, I just need to LOOK at the screen and it's ready to go.

In fact, FaceID is so fast for me, I just pick up my phone and swipe up without even thinking about it. That seems way more convenient than picking up my phone, placing my thumb in a certain spot and waiting for it to unlock, then swiping up. Even if it's VERY FAST, you can't simply raise the phone and swipe up immediately as you would have to be still for a second or so, then swipe up.

If Apple is planning on going back to TouchID, I'm going to be very sad. FaceID is high-tech futuristic stuff and I've only had it fail a few times since I got my iPhone 12 mini. Meanwhile, when I had TouchID, it would fail if my hands were too sweaty or wet, or if there was too many fingerprints on the button and I had to constantly keep it clean and even then, it would fail to recognize my finger sometimes.

Everytime I pick up my iPhone 12 mini, I feel like I'm living in the future. It amazes me every single time still. Especially how the notifications just pop open when my eyes lock onto the phone. It's the one thing Apple has that ACTUALLY feels like magic.

If they DO end up putting a fingerprint scanner back into the iPhone, I hope they keep FaceID as an option and the fingerprint scanner as a secondary option. Another fingerprint scanner would be going backwards in my opinion.

Considering you need one action for Touch ID and 2 for Face ID, Touch ID is still more efficient to many of us.

Too many of Apple’s new feature “innovations” often take more actions to inact, so there’s some new pain that offsets any new again.

I smell a bit of hate on Touch ID in this discussion, and I’m legit confused: what’s wrong with Touch ID that people hates it and don’t want it to come back? We are years if not decades away out of pandemic, so mask will be around us for a very long time. Face ID still needs time to adapt to mask situation, and PIN would he required. Probably for most people they are using numbers (6 digit or even 4), but me is using alphanumeric, and it’s complex. If Face ID fails, I’d need to spend 5s to type that passcode to unlock. And no, iPad DOES NOT SUPPORT Apple Watch unlock.

I don’t believe Apple will ditch Face ID and go back to Touch ID. However, if Apple does go diodes style (which they have an amazing track record at), I’d rather them to maintain status quo. With that being said, I would much like apple adding Touch ID in addition to Face ID as 2FA. There’s nothing wrong to have both and it’s not like Touch ID failed us for a few years before iPhone X.

Of course they are not doing away with FaceID!!! Any introduction of fingerprint sensors will be used in addition for extra security. Such as bank transactions. Think of it as a 2FA.

I would imagine Apple will only introduce this if they have perfected taking a fingerprint from anywhere on the screen.

Yes Face ID in conjunction with power button Touch ID I think is the simplest compromise (they already have it on the Air 4). In screen Touch ID sounds good, but could also be complicated and expensive to implement, especially if Apple want to perfect it and make it better than current offerings on Android phones, which are very hit and miss at the moment (on my missus Galaxy S20+, has now just given up accepting my print).

I don’t hate TouchID, I prefer FaceID. With my job I’m constantly washing my hands, and since I’m outside for 6 hours or more in all kinds of weather, my hands are dry and hard to register a print. I have a SE2020, I got for free from Verizon, and I use it as a backup phone at work. My fingerprint hasn’t worked in months, even though I have several fingers registered. I have to constantly type in my passcode. With my 12 Pro Max, my Apple Watch unlocks my phone and I have no issues typing in my code when I’m using Apple Pay or any apps that require a passcode. If Apple implemented both I wouldn’t have any problem with that, but I’m not in dire need of both, at the same time.

They will keep Face ID most likely. However, I think it’s better for everyone to have the choice, whether to use Face ID, Touch ID, or both.

I prefer Touch ID, specially with the facemasks issue.

Are you referring to the accessibility option to rest finger to unlock? By default, you have to press a button and on the 12, you swipe up just like everywhere else on the phone.

Or no actions for face id and one action for touch id based on what is being done on the phone. So it all balances out. Additionally taking "more actions" for innovations often save time in the long run for getting a task done, because there are additional options.

Slightly off topic, but my FaceID just very recently started recognizing me with a mask on. I'd set up an "alternate appearance" with a mask on months ago but it almost seems like it just kicked in now. Weird.
FaceID learned to recognize me with the mask. No need to set up an alternative appearance. But when I upgraded to iPhone 12, it forgot how.

FaceID is also more secure. This claim was made by Apple and then verified by security researchers. Just takes a lot more effort to forge a face than a fingerprint. If they add under the screen TouchID, I will be disabling it and only using FaceID.

Random advice for anyone with an unusually high threat model — use a strong passphrase for your iPhone and shut it down the second you’re in danger. Obviously don’t enable any sort of iCloud recovery method.
No Face ID is not more “ Secure” (that’s BS) face ID can be tricked there are many examples online of it being fooled. Face ID defeats the whole purpose of having a “Secret password” with Face ID everyone has (or knows) what your password is IT’S YOUR FACE and there is a copy of it on your drivers license, your yearbook photo, social media postings, Family photos etc. Using your face as your password is DUMB, there’s nothing more secure than a LONG strong alpha numeric password undergirded by a fingerprint
I’m a bit surprised that so many have drank the “Face ID kool-Aid.

This. I don't know who invented Face ID, but it certainly wasn't for security. Face ID was made so anyone will be able to quickly unlock your iPhone, without having to use your finger or ask for your passcode/password. That's it. Even if no one has access to your driver's license etc. imagine when you're asleep, and someone takes your iPhone and unlocks it by holding it in front of your face. It's unlocked. And while you're sleeping, that person now has access to your device without your consent. Therefore, compared to Face ID, even a simple 1-digit passcode/password would make it harder or at least require more effort and time to unlock your iPhone.

I much prefer Touch ID and PIN like you, but to be fair to Face ID, it uses 3D facial mapping technology so it cant be fooled by pictures of faces, unlike most Android phones that only use the front camera for facial unlock, and can easily be fooled by pictures of faces etc. Also with attention awareness turned on, no one can scan your face when your asleep, and the iphone wont unlock. It will only unlock with your eyes open and looking at the screen.

Umm, no...it doesn’t work this way. Your eyes actually have to be open and looking at the device. My nephews were always trying to get into my phone by holding it up to my face. I just had to close my eyes or not look at it so it wouldn’t unlock. Also, it uses a 3D image of your face to unlock. A picture or driver’s license isn’t going to do it.

It requires an IR validated image and the eyes to be open - and it won't work if e.g. someone else's hands are holding them open.

What would work is a very freshly killed person with their eyes glued open.

I have quite long hair and I find Face ID often kind of an annoyance since it often won't work if any hair is dangling around my face, then it won't work while I'm brushing my hair out of my face. It's also not as reliable as Windows Hello in backlit situations. Touch ID is much more consistent, even though that also comes with caveats in winter. Best solution would be the option of both but that would mean a change in Apple's design philosophy so probably not

Oh gosh that is a brutal example! 😧

I love the concept of Face ID and I can tell how it would be much faster for many users. I can, however, think of a situation where Touch ID would more beneficial:
I have been almost blind since birth. I can only see partially from one eye. Whenever I use any device, I either bring my face close to the screen, or bring the device close very to my face (1 - 3 inches).
Because Face ID is designed to work from a normal “working” distance and needs a complete 3D scan (unless used with an Apple Watch), Face ID can never get a complete scan of my face because I need to hold the phone so close, and I don’t know what a “normal” distance is that would give Face ID all the data it needs and so I often have to guess—so it takes longer.

You would definitely benefit more from TouchID than FaceID.
