well the OP might be partially right. While it has resolution of the retina display, the early hands-on photos show rather poor viewing angles, which might mean that it is not the IPS display found on the iPhone4, but instead a much inferior TN model. TN is cheaper tech, and displays don't look nearly as nice.

You've based your comment on a couple snapshots showing the iphone4 on a home screen (black with icons) sitting next to an ipod touch 4G on a pure white screen taken from an angle? Not a similar test in any way to provide a review of viewing angle.

Makes sense, they have used lower grade screens in the past for the touch. Gotta remember that a 32gb iPod is $300 and a 32gb iPhone is $700, they've gotta save money on components to keep the touch profitable, and the screen is the most expensive component.

A 32GB iPhone is 700$ without subsidy. I think it really doesn't cost much more than the subsidized pricel and that the price is higher only to have people get a contract with AT&T.

Fact is, the iPhone and iPad have the IPS screen. IPS is a technology specifically to widen the viewing angle of a screen. The new Touch does not have an IPS screen. So the extreme angles are subject to the discoloration from angled viewing. Simple as that.

It's not a big deal in my opinion. You are almost always looking dead straight at your iPod, I don't see why you'd ever be looking at it any other way.

The iPod touch 4 has been proven to have a TN screen. Check out the Engadget hands on video.

Watched it yesterday, will wait for actual reviews instead of speculation. It doesn't really matter either way, retina display is the 960x640 resolution only, not the viewing angle, Head on, they will both look exactly the same. I find my ipad is unusable at angles anyway due to the glossy screen.
