Apple's/ATT USA site alone crash while trying to handle over 600K preorders for the iphone 4 back on June 15th 2010.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20007906-260.html

Some people think that was world wide sales but that was just Apple's USA site for ATT which is a crazy amount and that amount probably would have been higher because probably 1/3 of people trying to pre order just gave up. I spent hours trying to preorder 3 iphones and only one order got through before I had to wake up to go to the store.

However, I predict Verizon won't even reach half the 600K preorder ATT set.

There are a couple of reasons and this isn't a "bash Verizon" thing. I am strictly giving my well thought out reason.

1. The main reason is that there simply aren't enough Verizon customers eligible for "full subsidy" $199/299 upgrades. ATT bent over backwards trying to "lock" people into 2 year contracts before their exclusivity ended. So ATT moved up plenty of people who normally would not have been eligible for the full subsidy upgrade (people were moved up to 6 months on their eligibility date). So more customers eligible, more sales. It's just simple math.

Verizon isn't bending over backwards trying to move up their customer's eligibility date like Apple. So Verizon won't capture the common upgraders who will want to wait until their full subsidy.

2. Number 2 is probably a more minor reason (except for diehards). But there are some people who anticipate a new iPhone coming sometime this summer and waiting a few 4-5 months is worth it to have the lastest/greatest. Verizon customers have waited at least the past 2 years so what's another 4-5 months for them. So this isn't a "new" iphone being released. Verizon is getting a phone that's been on the market for 7 months now.

So I am glad Verizon is finally getting the iPhone (I am a longtime ATT customer).

Hope everyone is happy finally (except Sprint/tmobile usa customers!).

But those are my reasons why Verizon will not match ATT's iphone 4 preorders.

Verizon has over 90,000,000 subscribers, and apple announced 110,000,000 million iphone 4's to be produced in 2011 alone. I am sure they are going to get a significant percentage sold to verizon customers.

Does anybody here actually care? Pointless thread - this rant could have fit into an existing thread.

I bet lots of Verizon iphone 4 users will be mad when iphone 5 comes out later this year since they will have to pay full price for the iphone since they have a 2 year contract. They will all wish they had waited for the iphone 5.

Verizon iPhone 4 users will be in the exact same boat as ATT iPhone 4 users when the 5th iPhone comes out if the people who got the iPhone 4 used an upgrade as ATT iPhone 4 users wont be able to upgrade anyways until 2012. I'm going to do what a lot of other people are doing... sell one and buy new. I'm getting the iPhone 4 off contract for about $140 (my own special case). Nice try though at trying to be a party pooper.

I saw in the comment section on tipb.com that a lady called verizon at 8 am and she learned that Verizon sold 330,000 already at that time. I think Verizon about 500,000 and Apple sold 500,000. This would give a total of 1 million pre-orders.

LOL. Some one was completely wrong.

Not necessarily wrong. ATT/Apple had 600K preorders on the the first day (june 15th alone before their systems crash).

I don't know if Apple/Verizon will release results of how many preorders they had for the CDMA iphone.

I am talking about first day results. So we have to compare June 15 2010 ATT preorders (600K) with Feb 3rd 2011 Verizon preorders.

Until Verizon releases numbers of their preorders sold yesterday, I will stand by my original post.

You have to use simple math. ATT and Verizon have similar customers (over 90 million customers). But ATT allows much more pre existing customers to move up their upgrade dates by 6 months. Add in more outside eligible people preordering iphones on June 15th.

Verizon only let existing customers upgrade with the pre orders yesterday.

Who know how many Apple/Verizon sold yesterday. It could be 300K? But Verizon/Apple is having another preorder Feb 9th which makes you wonder if Apple/Verizon limited preorder sales to drive up demand.

Well with all those factors being different, is it even fair to compare? You're pretty much admitting it's not apples to apples, right?

I, for one, bought the iPhone at full retail price and kept my upgrade to use when a new iPhone comes out within the next 20 months.

Exactly. If the OP is stating that there weren't as many pre-orders for this launch due to the limitation of only existing customers being allowed to order, then wouldn't it be more appropriate to wait until the 9th has come and gone and we have the absolute total amount of pre-orders?

Hell, I'd say that even just yesterday's pre-orders blew AT&T's launch out of the water. I could be wrong, but we'll see fairly soon.

Go ahead, have some...

Hi Hater!

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/04/verizon-breaks-first-day-sales-record-with-iphone-4-pre-orders/

Seems like Verizon breaks first day sales record with iPhone 4 pre-orders -- in only two hours.
It took Verizon only two hours of having the iPhone 4 available for pre-order to break its all-time record for first day sales of a single device.
So yes VZW beat att's 24 hour iPhone 4 sales in only two hours

I just don't get these Verizon-ATT threads. News flash, these are not your penises and your phone is not a ruler.

Haha. This reminds me of the infamous AT&T iPhone 4 launch thread where the one guy said something like, "For the last time you stupid idiots the iPhone will not be delivered before the actual launch day and you will not get it early".

Wonder where that guy went....

Agreed, I'm on verizon and its decent, I was on ATT and it was decent. Both have the advantages and disadvantages.

I'm taken aback by the fanboyism here directed towards both Verizon and AT&T. Its a cell phone company and they have one purpose, to make money. I have no loyalty to either company. I choose which carrier has the best options for me. It was verizon, but for a variety of reasons, it appears that I'll go back to AT&T when my contract ends this summer.

We reported that Apple and Verizon Wireless both stopped taking iPhone 4 pre-orders yesterday evening, but that’s not the entire story. Verizon has announced on Friday that first-day sales of the iPhone were bigger than any first-day phone launch ever. Additionally, Verizon notes that this happened between the wee hours of 3-5AM — pretty remarkable, and more proof of just how many people have been waiting for Apple’s smartphone. Hit the jump for Verizon Wireless’ full press release.

VERIZON WIRELESS HAS RECORD SALES ON FIRST DAY OF iPHONE 4

Available to General Public on Feb.10

BASKING RIDGE, N.J. – At 8:10 p.m. EST yesterday, Verizon Wireless ceased online orders of iPhone 4 to existing customers and ended the most successful first day sales in the history of the company.

“This was an exciting day,” said Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer for Verizon Wireless. “In just our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history. And, when you consider these initial orders were placed between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., it is an incredible success story. It is gratifying to know that our customers responded so enthusiastically to this exclusive offer — designed to reward them for their loyalty.

“I am proud of our employees who worked tirelessly to strengthen and scale our systems, enabling unprecedented customer orders through our website. Overall, it was a very good day,” he added.

Mead also said customers will have another opportunity at being among the nation’s first to own an iPhone 4 on the Verizon Wireless network.

“Yesterday’s launch set the pace for next week when we open up sales to everyone across America.”

The general market launch of the iPhone 4 on the Verizon Wireless network will occur on February 10. The company will open its more than 2000 Verizon Wireless Stores at 7 a.m. It will also be available at all Apple store locations, Best Buy, select Wal-Mart stores, and on-line at verizonwireless.com and apple.com.

How on Earth did you come to that conclusion? What does Verizon beating its *OWN* record for pre-orders have to do with what ATT did?
