It looks style-proof too

I just dropped my MBP today and it kinda looks like yours except that nothing happened to the ethernet port, it's just the corner that's bent. I can still open and close it but it scratches the body everytime I do it. How did you manage to get the corner straight?

Since it works, it does seem like it might be best to just keep using it. If you ever get a new notebook down the road, I suppose this guy could work more as a desktop slab, tucked away connected to display and keyboard/mouse, then you wouldn't have to look at it much.

This thread only confirms why my MBP 17" doesn't leave the house. It could face uncertain death or disfigurement. In the meantime, I will travel with my Air. At least if that breaks, I won't feel very bad.

The unibody construction, in my opinion, is one of Apple's most clever moves. It streamlines the manufacturing process and is noticeably sturdier than the old style. Cuts down on material, increases profit margins. And I don't really buy the whole "Oh, Apple just did this to make things harder to replace." Computers aren't meant to be broken, and cosmetic damage isn't Apple's problem. If it costs more money to replace, just be more careful.

I remember having a dell back in 2004 where I could lift one corner of the laptop about 1/4 - 1/3 of an inch and the other three corners would still touch the table. Thank you Apple!

Haha, you put my thoughts into words.

It sucks dropping something expensive. Just think, in the days before laptops we never had this problem. I can't count how many times I've dropped my iPod. It's got dents and such, but still works like a charm!

I set the laptop speaker-down on the counter, with the lid open hanging over the edge, and firmly pressed down on the effected corner.

To bend the corner of the lid back, i used pliers, LOL. good luck.

That's terrible. I can only imagine what went racing through your head as the MBP flew out of the backpack and landed on the concrete. I feel for you. At least you were able to bend it enough to close the lid. Good luck to you.

My MBP slid off my bed, while open, flipped, and fell about four feet onto a tile floor. Display gave out for about 10 seconds and then came back. Damage in the same spot as the OP, but nowhere near as severe. Still works perfectly :) Too bad I probably lose AppleCare...

EDIT: Just realized how old this thread was... my b.

Mac is still working and you got a new story to tell people. Lucked out real good. I would have gotten a heart attack if I was to hear that crackin noise.

If you take the bottom panel off and put the macbook in a bench vice you may be able to straighten it out a lot and only have to pay for a new lid.

A friend did that on his. It straightened the top flat and he just used a flathead screw drive to fix the NIC Port so he can get a cable in it.

wait a year. then get a case off of ebay for about $100. Shove the old components in it, then sell it for a bunch of money.

Problem with that, If you have a computer like that, I really doubt you would want to wait a year with a messed up computer, would you? I know I can hardly take my crapped-out Dell any longer but I'm only $8 into my $2500 budget. xD:D

Ouch...that looks like it hurt... :(

Good thing I have accidental damage coverage from Best Buy if that were to happen to mine. :)

I dropped mine couple months back. I nearly lost it. Luckily my dad was there to calm me drop. It fall flat on the base, the left top corner ( same as first poster) is a little bent. And the bottom has some marks. It made my sorry for not buying a speck case.
All in all, 5 months later. I don't even notice anymore.

Put in on Ebay if Marketplace doesn't work

You will never be happy with it now. See how much you can get on Ebay, but make sure you list it with full disclosure. Buy a new one. Good luck.

plastic vs. aluminum

I dropped my black macbook non-pro a few months after I bought it. The fall was maybe a MAXIMUM of 27", and my hard drive immediately stopped working. The only benefit of my computer over yours is that it is very easy and inexpensive to change hard-drives. It cost about $100 to buy a 250 gb one to replace my 80 gb and very easy to swap them out. However, if I had had a unibody, it seems my computer would have continued working making the replacement unnecessary.

Thanks to the XXX-rated image of the computer this thread, I bought a hardcase today for my MBP (Elecom clear case). I'm pretty pleased with it. In addition, I have a nice padded bag for it, so I think I have done pretty much all I can (within reason) to protect it from this kind of accident.

Good job bending it back into shape, by the way :)

Okay, I managed to bend back the bad parts of the display housing, letting the lid close all the way and stay closed. Then, I was able to open up the ethernet port and got it working.

The problem is 100% cosmetic now.

Oh my god! if I tried that on my mac, I would be unable to do it... because I would visibly twitch every time I brought anything that could clamp/bend within a foot of my macbook! :O

I feel for ya man, but to be honest, if it's only cosmetic, not too mention that it's not really noticeable, why not just hold on to it?
