This just happened to my daughter's iPhone 4 at school. Running iOS 7, locked with passcode and immediately turned on "Lost mode". thief must have it turned off, I have one location ping yesterday at 3pm (busy highway, not residential), and nothing since.

That's the thing about Find My iPhone, you only get a ping every once in a while.

I won't remove it from my account until maybe next year.

I just wanna know where it is? Why is it that they're not using GPS? Even if the phone is off....

And the crazy thing is is that they steal the phone but then they don't even turn it on or connect it to the internet? Like the fudge? They can't even use it.

Maybe it's being used in a bend test or drop video?

I've never seen that to be true.
http://evasi0n.com/iOS6/

Requirements

  • 5 minutes of your time!
  • A computer, running Windows (XP minimum), Mac OS X (10.6 minimum) or Linux (x86 / x86_64)
  • iTunes installed if you're running Windows
  • An iPhone, iPad or iPod running iOS 6.0 through 6.1.2 (you may check in Settings / General / About => Version)
  • A USB cable to connect the device to the computer
As but one example.

You will note, I said "some". Not "all".

Likely with activation lock they use it for parts, or just sell it on ebay/craigslist and try to disappear with the money before the person they sold it to figures out what happened.

iTunes is required because your computer won't recognize the phone. It won't charge or let you import pics or anything until iTunes is installed.

You erased the phone which in turn deletes findmyiphone and now you will never get a signal from it. That's why you always lock it, and erase as a last resort. It's still iCloud locked but you shot yourself in the foot now and won't be able to track it ever again.

Also, make sure....

Make sure you have wifi mode on all of the time because we found in tracking a friends phone that with wifi mode off it was showing the phone at the closest tower near his office (half a mile away from his office where he'd left the phone under a pile of papers on his desk).

When we got to his office and tested it with wifi on, it showed the exact location.

A stolen phone will most likely not be connected to wifi. *unless they aren't that bright

But that's the thing. The erase function is pending.

Currently, it's showing that it's never been online since that night.

That's the thing about Find My iPhone. It has yet to ... find my iPhone.

It hasn't even been erased. It's just offline. Maybe they can't connect it to Wi-Fi?

Maybe it's because I suspended my cellular service?

yes, it's imperferct. as someone already pointed out, it was intended as a tool to find a lost phone; not necessarily stolen.

I've seen a non-US website that purports to bypass the iCloud lock for your own personal use (not stolen or lost phones) so it's slightly off topic. The reason I post it is because if you don't put the phone in Lost Mode then these folks might unlock it. From the website:

"This is the first and only fully working and legitimate service that will remove iCloud Lock for anyone who has a device stuck on it, whether you are locked out of your own unit (and are in a place like **** which has no Apple Store to present invoice), or you bought a unit second hand from a seller who didn't remove their iCloud login from. We will NOT remove iCloud from a unit in "Lost Mode", meaning that the login area of the "Activate iPhone" screen contains references to the device being lost and erased, and / or a "Message From Owner" area, usually asking to call a number to return the device. "

What about if the thief knew or was an Apple employee? Similar to how those unlocking people work.

Apple employees can't undo the Find my iPhone lock.

Right, it won't stop the phone from being stolen. It will stop that phone from ever being activated again... at least without cracking your account. The intent is to make it less a target because when Find my iPhone has been turned on the phone is useless except for parts. Nowhere near the profit you get from a phone you can ship overseas and resell.

Well if it can't connect to Wifi and you suspended the cellular, exactly how did you expect it to report its location?

This happened to my friend. She texted me her Apple ID and password to locate her phone. She knew I had the app. So I basically logged in, locked the phone, put it in lost mode and gave my information if in case someone found it. The location where the phone was lost was incorrect. She just happened to leave it in a dressing room. Luckily someone who worked there called me up to tell me that they have it and will hold it for pickup.

My mom had her iPad stolen once, I activated Find my iPhone on it prior but it did practically nothing...the guy that "found it" (he's got a record so I was weary) erased the whole thing....was sketchy overall and kind of pissed me off but oh well.

Wouldn't it be possible to have a code or Touch ID to lock turning off the phone, so you could always use find my iPhone. This way the thief wouldn't be able to turn off the phone.

It finally happened to me. First iPhone I've ever had stolen, it was a 5s. And I'm the one who always tells people to keep their phone secure. Activate Find My iPhone and keep your phone locked down with alphanumeric passwords and Touch ID. I used it all.

But now, my phone is stolen and I'm putting Find My iPhone to the test. So far, there's been no activity on it. Any reason why?

I've already taken all the appropriate steps as far as notifying my carrier and erasing the phone.

Now, that they have it, is there any way... ANY way that that person could get into it, like jailbreaking it or something?

Or will it be locked forever? :)

So, what is the major flaw?

Find my iphone isn't guaranteed to find your phone. What it does do is ensures that the thief cannot restore the phone and use it thus deterring "smart" thieves in some cases.

No, iOS 8 does that. It also helps eliminate the resale market since people are increasingly aware that stolen iPhones can't be used.

Find My iPhone will indeed lead you to your device in most circumstances. There are many documented cases of it working; in fact, it was used by police recently to locate a woman who had crashed her car in a ravine.

Probably this. Cell service is suspended, so it can't get a cellular data connection to call home. And with the phone locked, the thief can't unlock the phone and connect it to Wifi. Do data, no call back, no results.

I wouldn't go that far. There's still a residual market for Activation Locked iPhones to be used for spare parts. Then there are the unsuspecting people who buy re-sold iPhones off craigslist, unaware that they can (and should) check activation lock status before buying. The clueless buyer ends up with a paperweight, and the thief ends up with cash.

Ativation lock defintely helps reduce iPhone thefts. The statistics prove it. But it doesn't eliminate it.
