i was in downtown Davis California.

Many small shops and restaurants. Even a Starbucks.

How did I do?

Zero.zilch. Nada

None of the businesses had nfc readers and many were perplexed on what apple pay was.

Even starbucks doesn't have the readers.

Who bailed me out?

PayPal! I refilled my starbucks card via PayPal and bought lunch and coffee.

After a 60 mile bike ride I know better.

Lesson learned apple pay has years to go.

All hype.

So you forgot your wallet and all your credit cards but you had a Starbucks card on you. Cool. What exactly were you saved from?

Starbucks app allows paying from a Starbucks stored-value card via the phone. The app presents a barcode and you hold it in front of the scanner sitting on the counter or that the cashier holds out the window.

As others have pointed out, you had options in your area to use Apple Pay but you chose not to use them or didn't care to check the area you were in well enough.

Lesson learned: you fail

I went to a McDonald's that I know accepts Apple Pay, but I went through the drive through. I asked if they accept AP and the lady said yes.....then there was an awkward 15-20 seconds as I was waiting for her to put the reader out the window. I finally said, "Don't you have to have me place my phone near your reader?". She said that it was bolted down on the inside. So at this point, I said forget it and handed her my card. LOL

I had a similar experience but the girl at McDonald's drive thru finally figured out how to unlock the device and hold it out the window. After that it went super smooth. That's my only Apple pay experience thus far.

First, stop telling people you want to pay with ApplePay, no one cares. It is NFC and nothing more. Apple just branded this BS because that is what they do. Second, you forgot your wallet? Go home and get it, like an adult. Finally, ApplePay, aka NFC, is hardly hype. Just because you don't get it doesn't mean it is hype. NFC has been around and working well out side the US for quite some time. There is a world out there, you know?

Yes it is just NFC, but I think there are some security precautions taken with Apple. I haven't looked into it much but I believe Apple pay isn't transferring your card data to the NFC terminal. They are using a secure token, which I believe the credit card company needs to provide to your phone when you set it up.

As for the OP, I don't think it will take years for this to take off. Unless companies don't want to play along, which I think they will want to support it, as many android and now soon to be Apple users are carrying NFC with them everywhere.

His point was more like you don't go around asking stores if they take Apple Pay, as it's only a name for NFC-type transaction. If you see a NFC-enabled terminal or know that the store takes passpay (from the MasterCard Nearby app), just say "I'd like to pay with credit" or "I'd like to pay with my phone."

The problem is the OP is making it sound like they were completely out of luck and Apple Pay left them hanging, but as I posted earlier there were two restaurants within a 5 minute walk from the starbucks they were at that are known Apple Pay supporters.

I was in the exact same situation once back when I had my Nexus 5. I had just been playing sports for the last few hours and I was starving but realized I had forgot my wallet, but instead of just randomly going in places and hoping they took NFC I went to a restaurant I knew took it and my phone did save the day. Even if I hadn't been able to find a place to eat that day I wouldn't have made a whiney post on a Nexus forum talking about what a failure google wallet was.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I wasn't aware there is an app that finds places that accept apple pay.

Yes I know it's new

I'm just making a point to say it's still in its infancy

I had the starbucks app from there i refilled it with paypal

The same complaints when color television rolled out. Two weeks after the introduction many on the TV forums whined that only black and white was available.

I love these "all hype" stupid comments.

Consider the following negatives (in the U.S.)

Apple pay is new

There is considerable kickback from retailers who don't like credit cards

There has been a decade fight by retailers against chip and pin or even chip and sign.

There has been a multi-year fight by retailers against NFC

There has been no real player in NFC arena until Apple Pay

Now consider the positives.

The banks want to keep control

The banks will shift fraud reimbursements to retailers Oct 2015 unless they use the chip or NFC

The rest of the world is using chip and NFC

In time the merchants will have to cave in or lose credit cards.

Who do you think will win in the long run?
Consumers.

PayPal! I refilled my starbucks card via PayPal and bought lunch and coffee.

So I went downtown without my wallet, and I decided I didn't want Starbucks. But I still had the app on my phone and money on the card.

So I went to Panera, and Subway, and Dunkin Donuts, and the local sub shop, and the local coffee shop, and I would order something.

And when it was time to pay, I pulled out my Starbucks app and waved it in front of the register.

Guess how many stores that worked at?

Zero. Zilch. Nada.

Lesson Learned the Starbucks app has years to go.

All Hype.

This is like saying American Express is a fail because it's not accepted at every store in the US, or that credit cards in general are a fail because some places accept only cash.

Apple Pay is one option. Don't make perfect the enemy of good.

I don't think you answered his question. You were saved from a caffeine deficiency?

seriously you are the biggest fanboy - next

i suppose you support QR codes too

Keep in mind...leaving your wallet at home isn't going to help you when you stopped by a cop. Your AppleDL /ID isn't functional yet either. Hang in there Bro. Life goes on.

Yes, I just got my Apple tattoo yesterday, thanks for noticiing.

I have no issues with QR codes, but I have no interest in using them. So again, are you going to answer the question?

Perhaps

I take it you aren't much of a coffee drinker?

Are you into those monster drinks?

Bad ass brah
