I forgot my wallet today too and only had my iPhone 6+..... so I borrowed a $20 from my coworker.

So you forgot your wallet and all your credit cards but you had a Starbucks card on you. Cool. What exactly were you saved from?

I don't think you answered his question. You were saved from a caffeine deficiency?

You guys do realize that Starbucks doesn't just sell coffee right?

They sell sandwiches, some have salads, lots of different food options and you can have one of their new sodas or some tea to go with it.

So he was saved from not being able to eat after his 60 mile bike ride.

As you already pointed out there were places around him that sold food and support Apple pay.

And you do realize that I was unaware that those stores supported Apple pay.

Did I need coffee?
I cycled 60 miles with a peloton with some climbing involved. Our average moving speed was 20.5 mph

Now you ask - did I need coffee? ..

HELL YES I NEEDED COFFEE and FOOD!!!! Do you have a problem with that?!
Lol

I need coffee if I drive 60 miles, not sure what I would need if I cycled 60. Most likely CPR.

I forgot my wallet and only had my iPhone 6 plus - how do you think I did?

Since USA merchants will be required to support chip cards by end of next year, my hope is that the additional cost of getting a reader that also supports NFC is low enough that they will just get one that does.

I know at least one major brand, Verifone, has included NFC in all its new POS machines since 2011. The real barrier would be whether the retailers actually enable NFC on the terminals but they'll only be required to support chip and pin.

It always comes down to cost and perceived/expected gain. It's up to us to get the retailers expecting a high return for their NFC investment :)

I take my phone out of my pocket or I take my wallet out of my pocket

I guess the gain isn't huge

I take my phone out of my pocket and hold it close to the terminal with my thumb on the home button or I take my wallet out of my pocket ... then open my wallet, fish the appropriate card out of its slot, orient the card the right way to insert it into the reader (or swipe it while still available), and finally put my card back into it's spot in my wallet...

Updated the steps a little bit for you... :)

i was in downtown Davis California.

Many small shops and restaurants. Even a Starbucks.

How did I do?

Zero.zilch. Nada

None of the businesses had nfc readers and many were perplexed on what apple pay was.

Even starbucks doesn't have the readers.

Who bailed me out?

PayPal! I refilled my starbucks card via PayPal and bought lunch and coffee.

After a 60 mile bike ride I know better.

Lesson learned apple pay isn't there yet.

I knew you wouldn't be able to do any shopping. Lol.

Apple Pay a service like what was it called?.. oh Ping. Same thing.

I am not sure what your reply means. If we want retailers to add NFC when they upgrade their current reader hardware, it's up to us to make sure they know that their customers want it, and that it will be worth whatever additional cost it will be to them.

I as well for the security and convenience.

I'm not sure if retailers will feel that way!
