I'm sure he wasn't expecting some to attack his character, but that's kind of typical of an internet community. Some will agree with you, some won't, but everyone who invests the time to read and has an opinion will likely share it.

if one of my real life friends had a similar scenario i would treat them exactly the same way. similarly, if i were in the same situation as the OP, I would have immediate driven to the local apple store and got it taken care of.

so it's not being on an internet forum that makes me able to call this guy on his crap, its not being high and mighty on a forum, but rather having some morals. it's being a good neighbor. it'd DOING THE RIGHT THING. i sweep the snow for the old folks in my neighborhood whenever it snows. i just actually like being out in the snow. but it sure doesn't hurt when my pantry is overflowing with homemade cookies! and i'm sure for those cookies, those seniors are seeing it paid forward somewhere else in life.

you can pick two paths. one makes things easy and enjoyable....the other.... not so fun. ;)

Maybe some of the moral outrage is jealousy? Secretly wishing is was them who found the iPhone? How many people out there would actually return the phone? I think the percentage is VERY low. I'm willing to bet, that about 90% of the people who posted here would keep the phone. Everyone will be quick to type "I would return the phone!" but in the actual situation, You know returning it to the owner wouldn't be your first thought. It's like finding the leprechaun's gold.

I'd actually like to think it would be the other way around and people who said they'd keep the phone if they'd found it would actually have an attack of conscience and return it if it happened to them.

Just got back from meeting her in midtown.

She was EXTREMELY gracious and thankful for going through what I did to get the phone back. She gave me a Starbucks gift card, but I declined saying it was not needed.

All in all, it felt great to return something to someone who misplaced it, especially since she was so thankful.

So thats it! The woman can now go home tonight and enjoy her new iPhone and everything has ended well!

You should have kept it. :D

I'm glad to hear you gave it back to the owner. She must feel very happy that it was returned to her. :)

Wow, impressive.

Before returning to the Apple store the 2nd time, the OP already went above and beyond what most people would have done. After his first trip to the apple store, it seems as though the manager didn't really care. At that point, if it was me, I'd be like ok forget it. First of all, although accidents do happen to the best of us, you deserve to be punished for leaving a brand new $400 phone on the metro. On the way home from the store, you really ought to have been guarding it/holding it carefully. Seriously. It's not a bag with a t shirt and some underwear. It's a phone. Be careful with it and watch it. Secondly, it was clear that the OP taking the iPhone was a good move. Leaving it there, someone would have most likely taken it and not even considered returning it. He then made the next good decision by going to lost and found, but since that looked sketchy, he did the right thing by keeping it. It seems as though originally the apple store didn't give a darn. If it was me, as much of a nice person I am, I'm not sure if I would have called the Apple store (Especially the one where I live, they're jerks there but that's neither here nor there). To actually go back to the apple store and spend all this time and effort trying to track down the owner - that's honesty and good faith if I ever saw it. This is a bittersweet story - good for the owner getting it back, but at the same time, too bad for the OP to not get an iPhone. If a person would find an iPhone and just keep it, then you should feel bad about keeping it, but because the OP tried and tried to get it back to the owner, it's a bummer he didn't get to keep it. Oh well. At least you secured your spot in heaven, if it exists!

Glad to hear everything turned out cool.

FWIW, I looked at that Craigslist link, I cannot believe the number of people who have left expensive stuff lying around NYC. Ouch.

God is a lie.

Pics or it didn't happen. Just kidding. Sort of.

The moral of the story is...

You initially get a certain giddy feeling when you find a stray valuable. That giddiness can temporarily (or permanently) confuse your moral compass.

But the giddiness doesn't compare to the feeling you get when you have a chance to return something you found to its rightful owner.

Unless it's cash.

Dude you completely did the right thing. However, I feel like you should def. go to the Apple Store and find out the rightful owner of the iPhone if you want. I mean, you already have done a lot. Do whatever you feel is best!! :D

Was she hot?

Just kidding... ;)

This actually sounded like a script for a really bad movie starring Jennifer Aniston. Girl loses iPhone, geek finds iPhone, etc. etc.
