I mean ...in my mind what if Apple did their version of the Wii U Fit meter. Added playlist storage and airpod support and automagically synced to the phone? And otherwise kept it simple like the fit meter?
hmmm, I was with you until you brought up adding music storage and playback. If you add that, you need a screen to control the playback, and you may as well just have the watch SE. I think from Apple's pov, it makes more sense to make products with too many functions that people can ignore, than to make products with too few functions that will find a much narrower market.

Yeah the market for this is maybe a market of 1 especially considering Apple's size.

But the screen? the ipod (Shuffle) above had no screen.

but the wii didn't play music, right?

I did love the iPod nanos. Not sure I had that particular model you posted, but went through several of them.

Too bad you feel that way. Have you ever seen Mary Poppins? There's a song about how looking for the fun in tiresome chores makes them easier to do. I've always thought that's a good outlook to have. Especially with something like taking walks for health reasons, there are ways to make it pleasurable as well as good for you. Like find a scenic route to walk, or walk back and forth to a favorite shopping spot, etc.
I have discovered that when I am consistent with walking (minimum of 30 minutes per day) I have more energy (which is to be expected), but also feel less depression. It is for these reasons, as well as time to myself, that I walk. Most of the time I'm streaming music. And this is one reason I still have my 6s Plus on an active line.

I tend to be more consistent during the fall through early spring however. Even at 5am during the summer in Phoenix, the outside temps are around 80 degrees or higher. Sometimes our lows during August are in the low 90s. It makes it much more difficult for me to be consistent.

But we are heading in to fall now and I've jiggered my schedule so I can be walking at that time. This morning my legs let me know it's been a while. :D

I live in a HOA, so basically nothing around me but houses. I was going to turn a walk into Scooter's Coffee as part of the routine, but unfortunately, even though they are 1056 feet away from my front door they are drive thru only. No walkup. :(

I'd been waiting for them to open as I finally have a coffee shop close to me to be in walking distance. But yeah, like I said. No walkup.

yep the point being between ipod Shuffle (sorry called it the Mini above) with no screen and Wii U Fit Meter with tiny cheap b&w screen and 10+ years...tech is there to do audio for a rock bottom price...I would think.

The Nano was rubbish though lol. Back in 2005 I had the iPod Mini which had a screen and never understood the Shuffle and the non-screen iPods. You ended up having to either memorise playlists or just put up with whatever song came on lol.

Sure, but rock bottom price devices isn't the market Apple's interested in!

yep of course. ...but in the age of ipods they went and made the Shuffle which was like $40 back in the day. ... in an ipod lineup of $150-$400 models.

So not impossible. One big difference today is, as a company valued at $3.5tn, they aren't interested in small fish.

Yup, exactly how I feel. And for me, I've found the Apple watch's activity circles to be a useful motivating tool.

in NY, it hasn't gotten so hot it interferes with my walks. The few days it got into the 90s, we walked to our local library, chilled in the air conditioning, then walked back. ;)

Wow, no walk up? What happens if you do walk up to the drive-thru window, or is that not physically possible?

Nottttt…a motivating tool for me, sorry to say. My problem is getting started, as it is with about anything I do. Once started, I hate (hate) being interrupted or stopped though. There are other things to motivate me though.

Yeah, I do live in a 'city' but it's not NY where it's the big city. I'd have to be living downtown for any of that and downtown is about a 15 minute drive (by freeway, not city streets). I'm by no means in the boonies. We moved here to get away from the boonies, but Phoenix is spread out. I mentioned the downtown. You'd laugh, we have no skyscrapers. ;)

You can walk up to the drive thru window but they won't serve you. It's a safety issue thing. I'm not sure it's illegal (although some places it is and my wife says it is here (Arizona)), but you can't expect to be served. You've got to be in your car.

Driving. Being able to glance at my wrist next to the steering wheel, and to get taptic notifications of turn directions is a benefit to me.
That's another good one!

A couple others are the passive heart rate monitoring and the loud noise notification.

I get it if people don't want one because they don't like how a watch feels or the hassle of charging it or shelling out the money. I skipped out on the Apple Watch for a long time for those reasons. But there are little benefits that are undeniable for every single person who's alive and breathing. And hey, with watchOS 11, people will get to find out if they're breathing too! 😂

As a timepiece I quite liked it. But mine was giving me dodgy VO2 readings every day to the point it was triggering serious anxiety. All doctors tests came back negative.

Ironically getting rid of it has improved my health, at least mentally.

I'm kinda opposite, being able to leave my phone behind and use just my cellular Watch SE on the go is freeing. If Apple didn't require the Watch to be tethered I'd ditch my iPhone. And I do limit notifications, on all my devices. If it's not a call or text, it can wait until I go looking.

I never bought into the Apple Watch hype. To me, just another overpriced, useless gadget and money-maker for Apple. Battery you can't replace yourself but requires Apple service for a fee.

Tell that to the people that were alerted to health conditions or literally had their lives saved because of it.
I don't think I'd want my health or life dependent on an Apple Watch. But for those it did, that's great. But I'm just speaking from my own personal perspective and typical usage.

No one’s life is dependent on any device till an emergency hits and you need help in ways not imagined. AW was that help for people who were stuck in storms, fell and used AW for help. Or healthy guys who suddenly got notified by AW about a possible heart issue. Great if you never depend on anything for your health.

lottery ticket situations at best.

And over reliance on this stuff probably has caused deaths as well.

Why would your be “dependent” on it? It’s not a dialysis machine. You don’t even have to use the data to improve your health markers that may need it, like resting heart rate.

But surely you can see the value (even if you don’t want to own it) of a device that can give you advanced warning of A Fib, so you can get it checked out before it becomes a problem. Or of sending an emergency contact message if you collapse and fall.
