Hey guys,

so if i go to the cops, say that he mislead me (yes, i missed the thunderbolt icon but than again, he messed with the system strings to mis represent his item. he also had his system info open right when you open the lid so that would be the first thing i see. so its obvious he tried to scam me from the start) and report that fraud happened regarding that laptop, is that good or bad?

Okay OP I gotta ask. Are you like 12 years old or something? Wake up! You have gotten told by 50 different people to simply call the police and report the incidend to see what the say and you are STILL asking us all what to do.

CALL THE POLICE.

alright, i'll give them a call i guess.

didnt know u could just CALL AND REPORT and not go in. but thanks sodner for clearing that up.

It's worth a shot, but chances are your MacBook Air will be brought into the Apple Store by the next person that he scams or sells it to. My guess is that he won't be holding onto your Mac for long before flipping it.

Some times a Deal too Good to be True Winds up not being so.

I will sell my old systems on eBay, but I never buy from them, or Craigslist Ever.

I bought an ATV1 from Best Buy in Nov 2010, something went wrong early May, called Apple under warranty but since BB bought this from Apple in May of 2010, Apple says the warranty was done end of May, but I had the receipt and they had to change the warranty. Point of this story is if I have to buy a product I buy Apple direct, even resellers do not always have products up to par, so best to buy from Apple, spend a little more time and $ but less issues when something goes wrong.

Good Luck OP

You do realize the page states it's using a 2.7 ghz i7 QUAD core, in the 13inch that's your first hint.

iWork 2010 is another hint I believe, it only counts up to 2009 right?

Don't be ridiculous - this Craigslist guy wouldn't be the first one to mistakenly think that an i7 CPU capable of 4 simultaneous threads is quad core. Given that there IS a new, 13" MBP with a 2.7GHz i7, the mere fact that it says quad core isn't enough to say the OP should have known. Same with being off by one year on a program version.

I'm just saying it's worth a shot to notify the authorities and the sooner the better. Again worse case they say sorry they can't help, but maybe they can.

Dude, grab yourself a couple of buddies, some bats and set up some sort of reverse sting to nail his ass. And I don't mean something as simple as getting your laptop back, I mean bad enough where he never does this again.

Then again, I'm a New Yorker... don't you dare pull crap on me and think you're getting away smiling.

:D

Just wanted to get my story out. Just got scammed on craigslist a few minutes ago.

Found a deal to trade my 2010 base air + 315 for a 2011 MacBook 13" with i7 and 8gb ram.

Met at a safe area. We both brought a friend along. I saw his laptop, couple of scratches and one or two dings. He said it was in excellent condition so I was a bit peeved. He saw that and said alright, 250 is fine. He apologized that his grading isn't as harsh as mine. First thing I do when I open the computer is check the info. MacBook 8,2, core i7, 8gb ram check.

I'm driving home. Still kind of mad that the laptop has scratches and little dings when he said there was none. He didnt have the box cause he threw it away so I didn't give him the airs.

So I'm at home cleaning the comp. It's all grimy so I'm cleaning the keyboard and screen. When I get to the side, I notice something. The thunderbolt icon is not there. It's the mini display part icon. So I'm freaking out now. What's going on. I turn on the comp again and yeah, it says core i7. Than I check my finder, 238gb free space. Huh? But there's nothing on the comp. I check the serial number from the info screen, apple support says it's a early 2011. Whew that was close. Than I click register and it says it can't. Now I'm beginning to get real worried. The missing thunderbolt and the low hard drive space are the the beginning. I flip the comp over and the writing on the bottom is Kind of rubbed off. I'm hoping it's from friction from going in and out of his bag. But than I see the real serial number. WQ.

It's a mid 2010 MacBook pro. I just got scammed for my air and 250. I should have been more thorough but the excitement of such a good deal blinded me. I assumed that the system info would always tell the truth. I thought it was impossible to have fake info. When I try to restore with snow leopard, I get an endless boot and the "press hold to turn off comp". The only consolation is that the MacBook has warranty till this august.

Laugh at me or call me stupid. I feel extremely crummy right now.

I'm usually so thorough and the one time.

God I'm dumb. Great. Broken old generation comp. Go me :/

Btw. Called his phone. Goes straight to voice mail.

His name was "steven smith"

It gave me iffy feelings but again my greed got to me. DAMN MAN. SO BLOWN.

That sucks man. But thanks for posting your experience, hopefully it helps others avoid the same mistake.

Hey, sorry to hear about what happened, it really sucks :(

By any chance, have you tried removing the hard drive and running data recovery on it? If he didn't zero the drive before he formatted it then its likely a lot of information could potentially exist on it if he was using it before he scammed you (ie. photos, text, etc, anything for that matter if you are looking to find out who this individual is and aid the cops in finding him). Simply formatting the drive doesn't technically 'delete'. Just don't fill up the hard drive whatever you do or then you might over-write anything if its still there.

You appear to be very reluctant to go to the police, why is that? it's probably your only shot to make things right, even if the odds are against you. At least it'll flag the issue to the authorities and if a similar scenario were to occur again in the same area the authorities might catch on to it.

That sounds like a good idea, maybe it'll give you (and potentially the authorities!!) more evidence and an address to find the guy... :)

after a three hour sleep, im still in a terrible mood. im mad that he was able to pull a fast one on me, a person who browses macrumors daily. i dont know, maybe its cause i wanted to finish the deal quickly, i can't believe i missed and ignored those stupid signs.

Its as if i lost 500. fantastic.

I don't think you lost that much with the scam. Used 2010 MBA base is going for around $700 on CL.

some what nervous. not cause i feel i did something wrong, but just nervous about going to the police. this would be my first instance getting involved with the law enforcement. first time jitters haha.

anyways, i went to the police station and unfortunately they said the fraud guy wasn't there so i would have to call a number to get a officer dispatched to my house. gr.

you can still sell for a decent price. put money towards 2011. pics

yeah, i always could. the idea of using more money kind of puts me off though. i guess i'll just use this comp until it dies.

if i look at it in a "glass is half full" way, i gained some processor speend (1.86 to 2.40) and 2 gigs of ram haha.

the 13" base? i can see the 11 going for that much but not the 13 inches yet. but maybe its just my location? :p

Sorry to hear what happened man, I've been scammed on that site before too, never again... :(

I thought he had a MBA 11. If it is a 13 inch, it's worth more of course
