Songbird is one of the worst applications I have ever used on the Mac. Not only that, but the interface is just disgusting.

IMO, there is nothing better than iTunes at the moment. I don't believe it is perfect either, it could use a little trim here and there, but I wouldn't say it is full of useless features.

I find iTunes runs perfectly on my Macs with a catalogue of over 8,000 songs. That's a bigger than average library and still no problems. I find Cover Flow to be smooth also.

Then again, none of my music is pirated. Either CD Ripped or purchased online. I think that many of the problems people have (based on the many iTunes problems I have seen) is corrupt files in their library.

Congratulations. You now love Big Brother. :D:p

I actually buy the latest and fastest premium PC's each year - or more usually, 9 months. As such I've gone back with a sigh of relief to Windows for most of what I do, especially at home. My also latest and fastest - well almost, don't have the new Pro yet - Macs are fine for the limited things I do with them at home now, and while inadequate for work we're fixing that.

Interestingly, while the hardware has been a problem for work, OS X and the ecosystem around it has proved most inadequate in the home.

I dont even know what the hell you just said?

I wouldn't let it worry you. Perhaps you're only ready for iTunes.

Oh, and read more books. Start with 1984.

What the hell are you talking about? I'm sure you love any excuse to go on a platform war rant, but I can't see how it relates to iTunes at all.

Back on topic, for anyone on mac who isn't satisfied with iTunes functionality, definitely check out dougscripts.com. It's amazing the extra features you can add to the app with scripting.

Sounds very strange to me... a lot of things you've mentioned have never happened to me, using Windows XP Media Center Edition. I'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling, mostly because your problems seem really isolated, and might be something on your part.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/3B48b Safari/419.3)

Same here. Under windows XP sp2 I barely had trouble that wasn't user related. I stand by my earlier statement. It's user error.

The iPod is not intended to be a storage device. It is meant to be a media player and as it turns out the nature of the beast is that its a decent portable harddrive. Why not simply back-up your media on DVDs? They are really cheap now a days. less than a penny a piece.

Or a person could have best of both worlds and get a DAP that is ums capable and has a large HD. Best of both worlds.

You might want to check out the third party managers (i.e., non i-tunes) under the 'MP3's on iPod without Going Through iTunes?' thread.

Check theLimit's post and click on the links for reviews and specs. of these utilities that can be used to move files back and forth from ipods to computers without using itunes.

Good luck,
GVDV

For a music program that comes with your computer, I think iTunes is amazing (unlike Windows Media Player on PCs) and fairly user friendly.

I didn't just post to say I like iTunes - even though I do! I just wanted an excuse to ask davidjearly what your icon is. It reminds me of the apple commercial but it creeps me out with that one guy, looks like his face is burned?(

Backup ... like .... What would you do if your iPod was lost, broken, stolen, hit by a bolt of lighting?

Or... you lend it to a friend, who plugs it into their computer, some dialog window comes up, he/she clicks Ok without reading - and now _your_ iPod is full with _their_ music. Or you just plug it into your own Mac and select a different playlist for the iPod - old one is gone.

Some people have problems with that. They cannot get into their mind that the computer is at the centre and holds all the data. So they complain about Apple TV not having enough storage (why does it need storage at al if my Mac has a 500 GB drive attached?), that they cannot have wireless downloads on their iPod and so on. But all the organising of data and media is much better done on your computer.
