I’ve had an M1 Air for 1.5 years and I’m still always babying it when I use it. I wish I could just use it without thinking about “damaging it” lol.

Anyone know what I mean?
it is natural, it is your valuable thing. I always put a case on my iphones and macbooks, cause I do not want any dents and broken screens, also helps with resale value

Yes have the same problem.

During COVID in 2020 I needed a Laptop for work and school. Bought an A-Grade Late-2013 Retina from Macofalltrades. It looked brand new with great specs (i7, 16GB). My first laptop ever.

I didn't want to damage it, so I ended up buying a cheap 2011 unibody, installed an SSD, and used it for my "running around" laptop to save the wear on the 2013.

Now I have a mint 2013 retina that probably isn't worth much lol

Worse, I have a few final model, max spec Intel MBP16’s. I spent soooo much money on them, they depreciated so much almost instantly, theyre mint, and Apple isn’t making any more (which means further mint ones going forward are going to be harder & harder to come by) that I went from not allowing anyone to take them out of the office, to not allowing anyone to even use them. They've sort of become my personal cache of jewels now. …& now that everyone else is used to MS Surfaces, I guess could probably just sell some off. Probably not the best way to get your moneys worth out of some very expensive macs.

Strangely, I tend to lean the other way-- I revel in how robust these machines are. I push them hard and don't take any special precautions with them and enjoy that they're so well built that it doesn't matter.

I use a MBP though, so I'm not sure if the Air would feel delicate enough that I'd change behaviors...

Yup. OCD is a bi+ch.

I usually get around this by buying a lower-end machine on eBay that I can be more...liberal with. Though I'll still probably put a case on that because pretty much any non-desktop Apple product needs a case nowadays.

I stopped babying my M1 MacBook Air ever since I got a dent on my right hinge out of nowhere. Probably it happened inside my backpack and got smacked by someone riding a motorbike when I'm out.
Then the best part: I threw my phone in a fit of frustration, it hit into the right corner of bottom case pretty violently. The MacBook Air only got tiny scrapes. The phone (realme)? Cracked glass back panel lol.
.
Stop babying your MacBook. It's tough as heck it even could stop a bullet piercing your body:
2017 Florida Incident, Saved by A MacBook

Edit: I'll be posting my dents and scrapes after I finish work today.

I bought a used M1 MBA for that reason. It partially helped. It already had a little dent toward the back somewhere and the keys were already starting to go shiny (which is one thing I would usually try to delay as much as possible on a brand new device), so it was definitely used.

Even so, I clean the keyboard regularly to get the grease off, I clean the body of the laptop... stuff that I didn't used to do with plastic case laptops.

I did the same thing with my 2020 Intel MBP - until the M1 came along and ran circles around the intel machines. The MBP has been demoted to secondary computer since. It makes me oddly sad.

For those of us who are not wealthy the price we pay for Apple hardware is not pocket money. As a result, no harm in being careful when transporting and using the devices. Now, there are reasonable limits of course. If you put on white cotton gloves to pick up the machine and wrap it in layers of velvet and bubble wrap to take it to work or school, then in my opinion you are taking things a little too far.

Yep, feel the same way about several bits of kit I own (ie laptop, phone, headphones etc).

For my laptop and phone, I've found it's best to add extra protection in the form of skins (phone and laptop) and screen protectors (phone). The skins and protectors are thin (so don't add extra bulk), and act as sacrificial layer so they adsorb all of the minor scratches and nicks you pick up handling your phone and laptop.

I paid like $700 so I need to get my money out of it  the older retinas are still very good machines, and I say that after adding an M1 MBA to the fleet.
Agree, still use my mid2010 MBP with an SSD and 8gb of ram and an i5 as my daily driver. My first and only laptop actually. Got it for 10 euros in fully working condition fom a friend, he said it was broken lol, i got it WITH the SSD, and 8GB of RAM installed already, i just cleaned it and took it apart and cleaned the fans. Fixed the infamous GPU panic issue with MBPmid2010GPUFIX app. Did fresh install of High Sierra, and its now working flawlessly and handles light tasks very well.
These old MBPs are amazing gems! And tanks!

Then just stop... you have that choice. You really do!
As stupid/simple as it sounds, that is the truth. You do have a choice!
This is why i love old used MBPs, they are tanks and i really dont care if it drops, it will just get stronger lol....nit to say im not careful, but im not obsessed or worried about it.

Great idea, and not as bulky as a case or cover. I was thinking how to protect my Mac's nice smooth surface from scratches, but without a case or cover because it adds bulk/weight, so a skin is ideal! Light, thin, beautiful, protective, and customizable.

so a skin is ideal!
Yep, I'm a big fan of skins. First skin I used was for my current phone (XR). The phone was purchased second hand with a few cracks in the back glass. The skin covers both the back glass and sides of the phone (you wouldn't know the glass was cracked unless you took off the skin), adds extra grip, and the skin itself has held up great over the last 2 years. I'll be using skins for my future phones...
