I have an incase hard shell for my 16" MPB because of the size and weight and being so slippy. I also have the 'cats' issue. My air 13" is put away in a Tomtoc sleeve when not in use. Finding a balance of taking care without obsessing can be tricky.
This is what I typically do with my Macs as well. I get the Incase DOTS shells from the Apple Store so that I know they're recommended and will fit correctly. They haven't failed me yet and haven't done any damage to the finish underneath that I've noticed.

It’s not about taking care, it’s being obsessive to the point you can’t enjoy or use with out worrying. Hard to understand for those who don’t have compulsive obsessiveness.
Correct. "Taking care" is doing things like using a laptop bag, not slamming the machine down on the table each time you use it, trying not to spill food and drinks on it, wiping all the fingerprints and dust off of it now and then, etc.

That's different than being so afraid of damage that you spend more time checking it over for damage than you do using it. For me personally, once I addressed a lot of my internal bs, I stopped caring.

Yes have the same problem.

During COVID in 2020 I needed a Laptop for work and school. Bought an A-Grade Late-2013 Retina from Macofalltrades. It looked brand new with great specs (i7, 16GB). My first laptop ever.

I didn't want to damage it, so I ended up buying a cheap 2011 unibody, installed an SSD, and used it for my "running around" laptop to save the wear on the 2013.

Now I have a mint 2013 retina that probably isn't worth much lol
That was silly

It’s an age old question/struggle haha. A lot of people have the same issue with their cars and shoes. Although, cars and shoes are usually more visible to the world than one’s laptop, so caring about a laptop’s presentation is more purely about the individual’s own preference.

The way I see it is—and this applies to all my belongings—it makes sense to take special precautions if I plan to keep it for a short period of time and sell it.
But if I plan to use something for the long haul (which I usually do), then understanding that near the end of its life, its resale value will be minor-ly affected by minor cosmetic imperfections—or at the end of its life when it inevitably goes into trash or hopefully recycling, it won’t make any difference if it’s perfectly mint or scratched to heck (assuming it doesn’t become a collector’s item which is extremely unlikely)—frees me up to decide purely for myself on what balance to strike between how I want to use and experience the product throughout its life vs how pristine I want it to stay—not based on any resale value or any other perceived value.

Personally, I like to use and enjoy a device as it was designed as much as possible with no case or skin. As long as it was designed sufficiently, and I use it as it was intended (no throwing it around or carrying it in a bag with rocks), I shouldn’t have any problem keeping it in good condition. I don’t believe it should need any permanent protection unless it was designed insufficiently or I use it not as intended. And if it was engineered to look and feel nice then I want to see and feel it, rather than cover it up never to actually be enjoyed as designed. Some things belong under museum glass, some things not. But that’s me.

It's from 10 years ago. Hate to break it to you, but you're probably not getting anywhere near $700 for it.
A brand new M1 Air that will roast it in every performance metric can be bought on sale for like $850 at this point.
This is true.
I wanted to try Mac so I bought a second hand MacBook Pro 13 2015 in mint condition with 257 (!) cycling charges on the battery, for about 3 month ago.
It cost me $350 here in Sweden😊

And of course i baby it, and I love it😂

It's regularly on sale for $799 on Amazon and it's currently on sale for $749

I recently realized how easy it is to get the keycaps off the newer Macs.

I bought a refurb M1 MBA to use as a travel computer so I don't have to bring my M1 Max MBP with me all the time, but my MBA came with QWERTZ layout.

First I just switched the Z and Y keys, then I bought an entire set of US keys and replaced about 20 keys so they match the US layout I use. There are a few odd things - I'm still not used to the shorter left shift key and taller/narrower return key - but overall it works great.

I bought a few extra sets of keycaps so I can just replace them whenever my current keycaps get too shiny/worn.
Interesting.
Did you just try it or is there a video or so to explain how to go about removing the caps?

I still wipe both the screen and the keyboard of my 2021 MBP M1 Max with a polishing cloth every time before I close it.
Especially the keyboard since I had to deal with those ugly staingate stains on my last 2014 MB Pro and I want to avoid those at any cost.
I don't feel bad about it at all.
And the MBP looks like I unboxed it yesterday.

Interesting.

There are some videos on YouTube about it but it’s really easy once you get the hang of it. All you need is a playing card, spudger, or even a credit card will work. You just use the tool to lift the two bottom clips off, then slide it up and off. Putting the key cap back on is really easy too. I got an entire set of US key caps on Amazon for around US$20. No need to worry about shiny keys when you can replace the key caps any time!

I stopped babying my M1 MacBook Air ever since I got a dent on my right hinge out of nowhere. Probably it happened inside my backpack and got smacked by someone riding a motorbike when I'm out.
Then the best part: I threw my phone in a fit of frustration, it hit into the right corner of bottom case pretty violently. The MacBook Air only got tiny scrapes. The phone (realme)? Cracked glass back panel lol.
.
Stop babying your MacBook. It's tough as heck it even could stop a bullet piercing your body:
2017 Florida Incident, Saved by A MacBook

Edit: I'll be posting my dents and scrapes after I finish work today.
Share the pics man

Yes. I used to be like this, probably worse than you. If any of my devices took even the most minor bump, I would worry for days that there was damage. I would remove the case over and over to make sure there was not hidden damage I wasn't aware of, I would wipe things down under really bright lights (and invariably find more scratches), I would inspect incessantly for imperfections, etc. I did this so much with one of my iPhones that the actual act of the case going on and off so much actually scratched the sides of the phone and did real cosmetic damage. Just from me worrying about something that wasn't even there.

In all seriousness, the way I stopped this was therapy and medication. It was anxiety. When I got the anxiety under control, I stopped worrying about stuff like this. OP: I'm not saying this is what your problem is, but I'm willing to bet it's based in some kind of anxiety.
That sounds exactly like me. Glad it stopped for you.

The Mac is a tool not an investment. Treat it normally and stop obsessing over the mundane.
Truth. I love your response. I always see your username and expect the most honest and direct response.

Deliberately scratch it up all over with a key or screwdriver. Not the parts that matter, like the screen and keyboard, but only the shell. Once you cross the line you will stop caring.

If you can't get yourself to do it, hand it over to a friend and let him do it.

If you can't get yourself to do that, start with putting stickers all over the machine -- not lined up but at random positions and angles -- and acclimate to an imperfect appearance and see how it goes.
This idea is actually pretty good. I'm gonna start with the sticker thing first though.

Why not get a shell?

I've had numerous laptops, big and small. They always get a case and my daily driver typically gets a shell.
Interestingly, for my M2 MBA, I keep it without a shell, but in a standard laptop case.
I actually do have a clear Incase shell.

I don’t care much about what the chassis looks like. My Midnight M2 MacBook Air has chips on the USB-C ports and my Apple Watch strap has been brushing against the left palm rest for a year with some damage to the finish. I don’t care. The laptop was bought to be used and I use it every day and I have 150 battery cycles in 1 year.

But… I can’t stand any smudges or spots on the screen. My screen is pristine. Trying to see through any dirt on the screen is horrible. The shiny, greasy keys bother me somewhat too. I try to keep the keyboard as clean as possible but if I notice anything on the screen everything comes to a halt until I clean it. (Obviously I have no interest in a touch screen Mac.)

it is natural, it is your valuable thing. I always put a case on my iphones and macbooks, cause I do not want any dents and broken screens, also helps with resale value
I started valuing my products more and therefore don’t hide them in cases. I don’t want to damage my iPhone or Macs but the reality is a new one always felt so good because it had no case or screen protectors detracting from the sure joy of using it. So for the past five years, it’s no cases. I find everything lasts as long and looks better; most importantly, I enjoy using them more not less.

I’ve had an M1 Air for 1.5 years and I’m still always babying it when I use it. I wish I could just use it without thinking about “damaging it” lol.

Anyone know what I mean?
No. Lend it to me for a while and it will get to prove how tough it is...

lol, I read the title of the thread as " I hate That I'm a baby machine" at 1st. Yeah I get that. I treat a lot of my things this way. Especially my car and my electronics. At least cosmetically. I try to keep them pristine.

I keep reading it as "I hate my baby machine" 🤨

I don't "baby" my laptop, but I do clean it regularly and treat it with more care than many people I know. I'm also the type of person who has 0 unread notifications on all my apps (compare that to my friend whose MacBook screen is covered in fingerprints and has 5,000+ unread emails and texts). I just can't live that way. 😌

Once I upgrade any of my Apple computers I sell the old ones, the better condition they are in the more money they can fetch… Look after your stuff and it’ll look after you…
