Waking up to the reality of this thread and my previous post in a new light...

Look, no one needs this phone. It is a frivolity.

No one needs nice cars.
No one needs a huge, fancy house, etc.

Do some people have those things? Yes, but do those things alone make them happy? Certainly not.

Having lived in some of the poorest places on earth, some of the happiest people I know have next to nothing.

As excited as many of us are, this new iPhone is a distraction. It's literally a shiny new toy when what we already have is perfectly fine.

Enjoy the phone you have for now and know it does 95% of what people are paying a lot more for... and just laugh at us...

You are probably on the younger side compared to some of us. I just had the let the wife know I was dropping $1500 on a phone after taxes and AC+. Her response, “I needed new luggage”

Yet after the purchase, we still go get it for them huh? Haha. It’s funny I bought my wife and I an iPhone X each but she still needed a new purse. She sends me all these pictures of a specific Michael Kors purse. I know what that means. Yes, she got her damn purse yesterday after I surprised her with it. Like really, I just pre-ordered you the new iPhone. Oh well. Luckily she sticks to a purse for a long time. She just happened to need one around the same time pre-ordering started.

how can you all afford the iPhone 10? Do you have upgrades or what? I’m in my contract for another year and have the SE. I would love the 10 but my mother said no.

I'm sure you can do some work and get some money to help pay for the phone. You can post on here so maybe you can get a job doing computer work from home?

Many are adults here, so with that in mind. Depending on occupation, some can just buy it outright, others save a little here and there for it. Others make monthly payemtns.

The iPhone X isn’t meant to be a phone for everyone. It’s expensive and for a lot of people it’s not affordable.

Not everyone can afford the 10. It seems like it here because so many of us are excited, so it’s the big topic of conversation. But I’ll tell you that when I brought the subject up to my friends elsewhere, most people said it was too expensive for them, or that their current phone was good enough for another year, and a few decided to go with the 8. There are only maybe 4 or 5 of us that are getting the X.

It sounds like your Mom is looking out for you and helping you with your finances, so she’s probably right that it’s not a good choice, at least right now.

The SE is a really good phone, so maybe that’ll be okay until the newer phones come down in price?

Funny you say this, outside of MR I find it hard to find people who really care about the X. The majority of people are pretty satisfied with their current iPhones.

There’s this thing that some people may not know or unfamiliar with: career.

I don't agree. If you live in a poor country, then yes.

If you live in Europe, even with minimum wage you will get a contract with a phone of choice. My contract end in March, so I do have the possibility to sign a new one next month and get an iPhone x 64gb. I have the Samsung galaxy s8 and can sell it for about 450-500 euro and pay 150 up front and pay 45 euro monthly the next 2 years. Unlimited 4g internet, unlimited text and minutes in Europe. 6gb monthly internet anywhere in Europe.

Without the phone, the same contract cost 25 euro.

So in most places in Europa, everybody who has an income, minimum also, can buy one without going in trouble.

I'm older than colour TV, the microwave, LCD screen, and definately the cellphone.. I make a lot of money, and I work with people who make. Lot of money, and they all think I'm crazy for spending this much on a phone. They all chuckle and say they will get it next yer for free on a contact.. I need a new phone, my 6 is done, and I want something new and different.. I'd pay even more for the X, it's the phone I've been dreaming of for a couple years now.

Apple introduced 3 brand new phones this year. 3 full featured no compromise phones. The 8, 8 Plus and the X all have the same features in terms on CPU, Storage, Performance and only minor differences in clock frequency, RAM, camera, etc. Under the hood they are all essentially the same... You aren't sacrificing anything when choosing and 8. You are still able yo run the same apps. You can still use the same services. You get nearly all the same features of a modern Smart Phone.

It's not as if the 8 is the same class as an iPhone SE or even a previous generation iPhone.

The X should be considered Apple's premium version (Like an Edition™ Apple watch) and is priced as such. Can't justify the X? The 8 exists... because the X is a luxury purchase. For those complaining about price? They are really complaining that they can't afford the X, because all the X offers over the 8 / 8 Plus is status. The vast majority of smartphone shoppers don't need™ what the X offers over the 8 / 8 Plus. A few exceptions may exist but for everyone else... they desire the status.

I work 2x a week for 10 hours. I have learning disabilities so I live with my mom.

I’m 35 with learning disabilities.
I am sorry to hear that you have disabilities. Don't worry you are not alone in this world. There are people with disabilities all over the world. My advice would be to look out for companies that hire people with disabilities. In Europe, Belgium to be more exactly the government give companies incentives to hire people with disabilities but I don't know how the system works in the United States of America. I have a savings account were I put money aside for things like a new Apple product or anything else.

I disagree. It’s expensive for most people. There’s a reason why there’s an iPhone at every price point.

It is a very expensive phone whatever way you purchase it - outright or contract. This is to the extent one phone company called Three in the UK is offering an IPX on contract for over £117/$150 a month.
