Hmm, that almost but doesn't quite answer my question for my situation. I have had a blackberry with ATT for about one year. I was going to upgrade to a 3Giphone, but when I check on the MyATT web site, it says I will not be qualified to upgrade until next March (WTF?). So, I figure rather than pay the much higher upgrade cost for the 16gb model, I should just prematurely cancel my blackberry service and then go in for a new 3g iphone, right? Well, I called the local ATT store to ask the service rep if there was any downside to that. He got very nervous and started talking in a low voice, and just said "we were told not to discuss that option with people". I said, "well, I'm bringing it up, not you. Is there any downside?" and he still basically would not answer. So, what's the poop? Why would anyone go for the higher upgrade price instead of just canceling out early? I think my cancelation fee would be about $110, or so.

thank you so much! That would be much simplier.

Will moving my individual phone to a family plan extend my contract, or mine would stay the same and the new phone would get 2 years?

Not sure about that one. I would hope that they would pull your phone in with it's existing renewal period but I imagine they could technically say it's a new plan an therefore a new commitment. That would probably be best answered by an AT&T rep. Although it takes a few minutes to start things up, I have found their interactive online support to be very informative. They were able to change features on my daughters line right there during the instant message session. I'm sure they could answer this question for you.

Definitely a good option if you are anxious enough and can't wait it out. The reduction of $5 per month would bring it down signficantly for you. The resulting "premium" over the $199/$299 eligible prices simply has to be something you are comfortable with. Last September I paid $399 for my 8GB. Even paying the full early termination fee would be less than that what I (or we) paid not too long ago.

ohhhhhhh dude.:D:D.........you are soooooo in trouble.

The S is going to hit the fan now :D:D

Family plan

Dang...I'm going to be ticked if I walk in their to switch my wife and I over from Verizon and the only let me get one phone.

Ahhh the times i love my macbook...cause' i can turn it sideways...:D

Anyway, thanks for posting, i was beginning to doubt you.

Isn't the ETF fee $175? I know they started some pro-rate thing where it's $5 less each month, but that's specifically for new customers or renewed contracts from that point. All existing contracts are still $175 no matter what.

What's this discount thing. Are you guys talking about a discount on the phone itself through school and corporate? Or are you guys talking about a discount on the monthly service? Like right now, having Phone, Long Distance, DSL, and my Cell with ATT I get a 20% discount on my cell plan ($8 off). Will I not get that 20% off with the iPhone plan?

Also, what the heck is the so called "Early Upgrade" term they are using?

Wasn't that supposed to be the no-commitment price, or basically full price like the 1st iPhone?

What irks me is you still have to pay an $18 upgrade fee for that $399-$499 price. It's like they came up with the title "Early Upgrade" just to impose that fee on you. Now it's $417-$517.

God, it's like the want to punish us existing customers that are not eligible even more. I at least take it that this "early upgrade" doesn't start are real upgrade all over again, right?

Was there a $18 upgrade fee on the non-subsidized 1st gen iPhone?

Does sound like old boiler plate referring to the old iPhone. Which would make sense bc of the discounted data/text plan. I have heard from a few reps that FAN discounts will apply to iPhone lines, take that for what its worth.

That's correct. I remember reading this on AT&T's support site. All contracts started after May 25 of this year (give or take a few days) will have their ETF reduced by $5/month of activity. The rest are still under the full $175.

For the iPhone 3G rollout that should affect a very small percentage of people a very small amount. I haven't punched it into the calculator, but last I checked even 175 is less than 200, so if they'll let you do it, might as well. It's certainly on my list of things to try :)

If you do ETF, totally canceling your account, then won't the standard $18 upgrade fee become the regular $36 activation fee? Though, just found out even at $399 price there's an $18 upgrade fee. So $217 total there, or $175 ETF +$36 at $211. But the $399 + $18 you may have a better chance calling up later to have the $18 waived than an entire $36 activation fee.

What exactly does "good standing" mean? Does that mean your account balance is all paid off...or you have never paid late? I am a bit confused because I thought it meant you always paid on time but one of the pages said "if the customer isn't eligible due to non-payment offer to take his payment to make him current". So someone could always pay late..but as long as they are current they can buy the phone? This question doesn't effect me so I won't be offended if no one answers..I am just curious!

I think the iPhone plans are fair compared to what I have seen for other countries (Canada), that info cleared up some questions and I can't wait to buy my iPhone 3G.

Did anyone see anywhere about your upgrade status after buying at $399?

Say you had 3 months before upgrade eligibility, but you choose the "early upgrade" at $399, does your upgrade status start all over like you bought a full subsidized phone? Or after buying the iPHone, will I be eligible in 3 months like expected (which I'd hold off for the next release)? That's how it worked with the first iPhone at $399 (I think)

Re Discounts:

I went to the att store and was shown the memo that said the 3g iphone will allow for monthly service discounts but the 2g iphone did not.

My brother works for ATT (home phone line type) and I will recieve his 19% service discount a month. They gave me a form to have him sign and all I need to do is get a photocopy of his ID badge and then fax in the form.

After that I just need to add his name onto my account as an authorized user.

After that I get his discount.

Zack

discount

When I activated my account last year they applied my company discount with no questions asked, or verification. Blackberry pearl @ 25% off each month. They may have changed or I had a bad (good for me) rep...but considering ATT pays these guys at 10/ hour, you might mention a large company to get a discount. i mean does the rep really care for 10/ hour? I wouldn't.

I do think we will get FAN discounts.

I think what that little small type is saying is that there will be no discounts (such as 15% off "this", mail in coupons, special promos, etc) available when you purchase the iPhone. But FAN discounts are OK.

At least that better be how it works...

Well those documents went against what the AT&T store rep told me yesterday. I am upgrade eligible on August 23rd (next month) and I asked if there was any way I could get the iPhone on the 11th with the subsidized price. He said "absolutely. It's only a month away." What the documents say however, is the total opposite. It says there are no exceptions. I'm so sad. I have to use my RAZR for one more month. :(

this is similar to my experience asking about edu pricing. i specifically asked the guy if they needed any documentation or anything, and he said no.

I'm sure what he said was right, probably do it all the time to keep the customer happy, or from leaving. But with the iPhone, they are being really strict, trying not to let anything slip through for one customer and not have to do it for all customers.

downgrading plan?

I have one more scenario that I haven't seen answered on here. I currently have a 1st gen iPhone on the 900 min/month plan. However, when I upgrade to the iphone 3G, I want to sign up with the 450 min/month plan. The question is, will I lose all my rollover minutes or anything else?

Thanks!

When I switched from a personal plan to a family plan, I lost all of my rollover. Pretty crappy...

Yuck! I hadn't considered that.

In my scenario where I keep my existing 2G phone and add a line for the 3G, in the family plan, I get to keep my 200 Txts in the $20 data fee for the origional fee, right? Then can I add the $5 plan to the other phone or am I obligated to pay the $50 data (20 + 30) plus 30 for texts to cover the second phone on a family plan?
